Emerging prediction methods for early diagnosis of necrotizing enterocolitis.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a life-threatening disease of the digestive system that occurs in the neonatal period. NEC is difficult to diagnose early and the prognosis is poor. Previous studies have reported that abnormalities can be detected before the presentation of clinical symptoms. Based on an analysis of literature related to the early prediction of NEC, we provide a detailed review on the early prediction and diagnosis methods of NEC, including ultrasound, near-infrared spectroscopy, biomarkers, and intestinal microbiota. This review aimed to provide a reference for further rese

Juxtarenal Mycotic Aneurysm as a Complication of Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Cholecystitis Treated by Resection and Replacement by a Fresh Allograft.

We present a case of a female patient with infectious (mycotic) juxtarenal abdominal aneurysm with atypical symptoms beginning as acute exacerbation of chronic cholecystitis. Apart from common antibiotic treatment, the patient successfully underwent resection of the diseased segment and replacement by a fresh allograft in order to reduce the risk of infection of the graft, but with the need of subsequent life-long immunosuppressive therapy. Perioperative monitoring of the spinal cord by near infrared spectroscopy was used to identify possible spinal ischemia. The choice of the fresh allograft

In situ monitoring of cocrystals in formulation development using low-frequency Raman spectroscopy.

In recent years, to guarantee a quality-by-design approach to the development of pharmaceutical products, it is important to identify properties of raw materials and excipients in order to determine critical process parameters and critical quality attributes. Feedback obtained from real-time analyses using various process analytical technology (PAT) tools has been actively investigated. In this study, in situ monitoring using low-frequency (LF) Raman spectroscopy (10-200 cm-1), which may have higher discriminative ability among polymorphs than near-infrared spectroscopy and conventional Raman

Neural dysfunction underlying divergent thinking and its shared mechanisms with protracted withdrawal symptoms in heroin use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Drug use may induce transient bursts of inspiration but is also associated with increasing cognitive rigidity. How neurological damage induced by drug addiction affects higher-order thinking processes in humans remains elusive. This gap limits our understanding of broader cognitive impairment in addiction and prolonged maladaptation during withdrawal. METHODS: The study investigated divergent thinking, a key component of flexible behavior, in heroin use disorder (HUD). Behavioral performance was assessed using the Realistic Presented Problem-Solving Task. Task-related neural signa

Making new connections: an fNIRS machine learning classification study of inter-brain synchrony in the default mode network.

Little is known about the neurocognitive underpinnings of forming social connections. In this study, we tested whether default mode network (DMN) inter-brain synchrony (which prior work has linked to interpersonal alignment, or "seeing eye-to-eye") predicts feelings of connection during conversations. Seventy pairs of strangers engaged in shallow or deep conversations while brain activity was measured with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Stranger dyads in the deep condition felt more connected than those in the shallow condition. Greater feelings of connection were associated wi

Alterations in resting-state neural networks in subacute non-fluent aphasia after stroke: a fNIRS study.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke aphasia is a prevalent and often disabling language impairment. Despite its high incidence, the neuropathological mechanisms underlying post-stroke aphasia and the neural substrates of functional recovery remain poorly understood. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for developing targeted rehabilitation strategies. METHODS: In this study, we used fNIRS to collect resting-state data from three participant groups. Pearson correlation was applied to compute whole-brain functional connectivity, followed by graph theory analysis to compare global and regional netwo

Dynamic Changes in Cerebral Oxygenation and Arterial Pressure During Repeated Rapid Hypotension.

This study aimed to determine the changes in the time to nadir of mean arterial pressure (MAP) and oxygenated hemoglobin (O₂Hb) in the right and left prefrontal cortices (R-PFC and L-PFC, respectively) during repeated episodes of rapid hypotension. Four cycles of blood pressure reduction were induced via bilateral thigh occlusion at 250 mmHg followed by rapid deflation. Sixteen healthy male university students participated. MAP was recorded beat by beat, and O₂Hb was continuously monitored using near-infrared spectroscopy. The time from deflation to nadir was measured and compared across each

Trait psychoticism is associated with greater intersubject neural dissimilarity during naturalistic social movie viewing.

Psychoticism refers to maladaptive traits associated with eccentricity, perceptual dysregulation, and unusual beliefs. This study explored how individual differences in psychoticism map into neural responses during naturalistic movie-watching. By utilizing social movies with differing demands of inference, we examined how relevant correspondence of individual differences emerges as a function of movie features. A total of 157 individuals were assessed with traits of psychoticism, and intersubject correlation of neural response was assessed with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Th

Digital instrument simulator platform to support the development of noninvasive optical NIR device for placenta monitoring.

SIGNIFICANCE: Abnormal placental development is a major cause of adverse pregnancy outcomes, but current methods for placenta monitoring are not suitable for bedside use. Continuous-wave near-infrared spectroscopy (CW-NIRS) is an optical technique that takes advantage of the near-infrared light to provide functional measurements such as tissue oxygenation at the bedside. However, the placenta is an organ located beneath several layers of tissue, making robust measurement of placental oxygenation with a CW-NIRS device a complex task. AIM: We propose a framework based on light propagation simul

An Activatable Dye-Sensitized Lanthanide Nanoprobes With Enhanced NIR-II Luminescence for In Vivo Inflammation Imaging.

Accurate detection of neutrophil activity is critical for assessing the severity of bacterial inflammation. Herein, we report an activatable dye-sensitized lanthanide nanoprobe (LnNP@ZW800-SC@PEG) with enhanced second near-infrared fluorescence for the real-time imaging of neutrophil-secreted hypochlorite in vivo. By screening of four cyanine derivatives, LnNP@ZW800-SC is identified with the brightest fluorescence at 1523 nm and the high absolute quantum yield (0.85%) compared to other derivatives. Mechanistic studies reveal that the high conjugation efficiency and enhanced absorption of the Z

Partially Different Mechanisms of Social and Nonsocial Attention: Evidence From Changes in Cueing Effects and Underlying Frontal Cortex Processing Over Time.

Gaze conveys important information about one's intentions and likely object of reference. Because processes of attention may change over time, for reasons including fatigue or experience, this study aimed to compare mechanisms of gaze and arrow cueing effects by measuring across sessions. On two separate occasions, 39 young adults underwent a cueing paradigm with valid or invalid gaze or arrow cues, as well as neutral cues. Activation in frontal cortex regions implicated in the dorsal and ventral attention networks was examined during task performance using functional near-infrared spectroscop

Unlocking Unique Physiological Reactions: Novel Insights into Four Cerebral and Systemic Physiological Responses to Colored Light.

BACKGROUND: For several years, our research group has been systematically investigating how changes in cerebral hemodynamics as well as systemic physiology can be induced by colored light exposure (CLE). We have observed that these physiological changes can differ between subjects for exactly the same CLE stimulus. In the present case series, we report specific physiological reactivity patterns from four subjects. METHODS: A total of 36 subjects participated in the study. These subjects were exposed to blue and red light while performing a 2-back task. For the present analysis, we selected fo

An integrative strategy for effect-linked screening and rapid quantitative prediction of bioactive constituents via multi-source spectral fusion.

Although spectral and chromatographic analysis are broadly applied to compound detection, the quality characterization of complex multicomponent systems remains a persistent challenge. Current analytical paradigms emphasize single-component quantification, lacking compositional coherence in highly coupled chemical systems. Therefore, it is crucial to develop an integrative strategy that enables effect-oriented variable selection and quantitative prediction based on information-rich but low-cost measurements. Using Reduning Injection as a representative case, this study quantitatively character

The regulations on topological organization of prefrontal-sensorimotor cortical network elicited by tonifying and reducing manipulations of acupuncture: A graph theory analysis study based on fNIRS.

This study aims to investigate the similarities and differences in the topological organization of prefrontal-sensorimotor cortical network (PFC-SMC) induced by traditional tonifying and reducing manipulations of acupuncture (TRMs), including the tonifying, reducing, and even tonifying-reducing manipulations. Thirty-five healthy participants underwent all three types of TRMs while functional near-infrared spectroscopy data were recorded. To characterize the network properties, graph-theoretical analysis was applied to calculate topological metrics at both global and nodal levels. Based on thes

A chromogenic and NIR fluorescence turn-on probe for sensitive and specific visualizing SO2 in food.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is extensively utilized as a food preservative, yet excessive intake poses risks to human health. To achieve accurate, rapid, and on-site visual detection of sulfite, in this study, we designed and synthesized a water-soluble near-infrared fluorescent probe LCMQ by integrating rhodamine with quinolinium. LCMQ specifically reacts with SO2 through a 1,4-Michael addition, resulting in a high-contrast NIR fluorescence turn-on response accompanied by a distinct color change from purple to blue. LCMQ exhibits excellent water solubility, rapid response (<5 s), high sensitivity, a

Near-infrared fluorescent probe for simultaneous monitoring of HClO and viscosity during Cuproptosis.

Cuproptosis is a newly uncovered copper-dependent cell death pathway closely tied to intracellular redox imbalance and reshaping of subcellular microenvironments. As a core endogenous reactive oxygen species, hypochlorous acid (HClO) dominates oxidative stress cascades triggered in cuproptosis, while cytoplasmic microviscosity acts as a straightforward biophysical marker to reflect cellular pathological shifts. In this research, we designed a novel near-infrared (NIR) dual-signal fluorescent sensor named Vis-HClO to realize simultaneous quantitative tracking of endogenous HClO and cytoplasmic

Hemodynamic variations in resting-state cerebral functional networks between Tibetan and Han male athletes assessed by fNIRS.

This study seeks to compare systemic variations in functional connectivity within core motor brain regions at rest between young male soccer players from the indigenous Tibetan population of the Tibetan Plateau and their counterparts from the Han population of the plains, to elucidate the intrinsic relationship between specific ethnic backgrounds and central nervous system hemodynamic phenotypes. This study recruited 44 male youth soccer players at the national second-tier level (23 native Tibetans from Tibet and 21 native Han Chinese from Harbin). Data collection occurred at a low altitude in

Atypical Inter-Brain Synchrony Network Couples With Behavioral and Linguistic Impairments in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Social difficulty is a core phenotype of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet its mechanisms remain poorly understood due to insufficient integration of interpersonal neural dynamics with real-world behavioral and linguistic impairments. This study elucidated this integrated mechanism by investigating inter-brain synchrony (IBS) networks between 44 children with ASD and 48 typically developing children and their caregivers. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy during puzzle-solving and free-talking tasks, an interpretable graph neural network identified ASD-specific atypical IBS subnetwo

Literature-Grounded Simulation of Non-Invasive Glucose Monitoring Using NIR Wearable Sensor Archetypes: Accuracy Metrics, Candidate Confounders, and an Adaptive Calibration Framework.

Non-invasive continuous glucose monitoring remains an important technological challenge in diabetes management. This study was revised as a literature-grounded simulation and methodological proof-of-concept rather than an experimental clinical validation. The analysis used 320 independent synthetic reference-NIR glucose pairs generated from physiological ranges and performance distributions reported in the cited literature, together with an illustrative 576-point, 48-h synthetic time series. Three sensor archetypes were informed by published optical systems. Descriptive agreement was evaluated
