The Lived Experience of Phonotrauma: Discussions on Identity and Stigma.

PURPOSE: To capture the perspectives of patients on the experience of living with a phonotraumatic voice disorder and their path through treatment, the current study examined the experience and emotional impact of a phonotrauma diagnosis. The relationships between voice disorders, identity, and barriers were explored through semistructured interviews. METHOD: Twenty-one individuals with phonotrauma (20 cisgender females and one cisgender male; 19 singers) participated in semistructured interviews conducted through a secure videoconferencing platform and lasted an average of 30 min. Interviews

Everything in Its Place: Experienced Facilitator Perspectives on the Environment and Materials for Aphasia Groups.

PURPOSE: Despite the popularity of aphasia groups and evidence to support their positive impact on rehabilitation, there is little specific research that focuses on the features of these groups. In this study, we aimed to investigate experienced facilitators' perceptions concerning two related elements of aphasia groups: the built environments in which groups meet and the tools that facilitators use when setting up and running groups. METHOD: We interviewed 13 experienced facilitators and used qualitative content analysis to understand their experience and perspectives. RESULTS: Through our

Navigating Texting With Aphasia: Insights From People With Aphasia and Their Partners.

PURPOSE: Text messaging is a widely used mode of communication. Like people without aphasia, people with aphasia use texting to communicate with those in their social networks. As the study of texting in aphasia is relatively new, little is known about the impact of aphasia on texting experiences. This study aims to uncover how people with aphasia and their partners navigate text messaging and how texting patterns change throughout recovery. METHOD: Participants included 15 people with aphasia and a self-selected texting partner. Naturalistic texting data and semistructured interviews were co

"Curious but Overwhelmed": Care Partner Perspectives on Education, Resources, and Coping After Aphasia Diagnosis.

PURPOSE: Care partners of people with aphasia (PWA) are faced with unique challenges, as their loved one's loss of communication may create specific barriers to expression, mutual understanding, and interaction. Previous research has investigated the challenges faced by care partners of PWA. However, there is limited research that investigates the perceived aphasia education needs of these care partners. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the perspectives of care partners on education, challenges, benefits, and supports they experience when caring for a loved one with aphasia.

Not So Simple, and Not So Fast: The Limits of Speech Rate and Turn-Taking Modifications for Treatment of Early Stuttering. A Response to Onslow et al. (2026).

PURPOSE: We argue against suggestions for a new "two-factor" approach to early stuttering that counsels rate and turn-taking adjustments to child-directed parental speech. CONCLUSION: We find that (a) the suggested approach is not new; (b) the limited pilot data are directly contradicted by a much larger scale, longer duration study published in this journal this year that shows no relationships between rate and turn-taking and recovery from stuttering; (c) rate and turn-taking adjustments may bring with them additional negative changes in parental speech; and (d) the proposed treatment conti

Clarifying Neuroplasticity Claims in Parent-Led Early Stuttering Intervention: A Response to Onslow et al. (2026).

PURPOSE: Onslow et al. propose a simplified, parent-led early intervention for childhood stuttering based on reductions in parental speech rate and increased interturn pausing, framed within a neuroplasticity rationale for early treatment. While the goal of developing scalable and accessible interventions is important, the conceptual link between these conversational modifications and neuroplastic recovery warrants clarification. Neuroimaging studies in childhood stuttering have identified neural differences associated with persistence and recovery, but these findings establish correlates of d

Response to the Letters by Chang and Bernstein Ratner.

PURPOSE: In our original article, we draw attention to the lifetime quality-of-life impairment that can result from childhood stuttering-hence, the need for immediate intervention after onset. We drew on existing experimental outcomes that parent speech-rate reduction and increased interturn speaker latency may reduce stuttering. We developed a two-factor treatment protocol based on those variables in combination and showed its clinical viability, suggesting that it would be a suitable target for Phase I-IV clinical trials. Chang and Bernstein Ratner wrote letters to the editor on our article,

Dose-Controlled Script Training for Aphasia: A Quasi-Randomized Pilot Clinical Trial Examining Treatment Frequency.

PURPOSE: The optimal schedule for delivering a given aphasia treatment is unknown. Competing theories suggest that both intensive (i.e., massed) and distributed (i.e., spaced) treatment schedules have benefits. Moreover, studies that have begun to investigate optimal delivery schedules have emphasized treatments for single-word retrieval rather than treatments that target connected language and have greater potential for generalization. The present study compared outcomes from three conditions of a script-training treatment, varying in session frequency. METHOD: Participants were 45 adults wi

Investigating Variability and Malleability of Speech-Language Pathologists' Responsive Talk With Children: An Early-Efficacy Trial.

PURPOSE: The purposes of this early-stage efficacy study were to examine speech-language pathologists' (SLPs') use of responsive talk with children and to determine the extent to which responsive talk can be modified through brief clinician education or an in situ, tablet-based feedback system, GENIE, that provided real-time prompts to use responsive talk. METHOD: Eleven SLPs (certified clinicians and graduate students) and 11 typically developing preschool-aged children participated in a quasi-experimental study. SLPs were paired with a randomly assigned child to complete two structured inte

DLD voices: Setting the research agenda for developmental language disorder in Australia.

PURPOSE: Developmental language disorder is associated with adverse social, academic, and mental health outcomes. The developmental language disorder community are the end-point consumers of research, as such, their input into research priorities is invaluable. We took a bottom-up approach to identify and prioritise the research needs of consumers with lived experience of developmental language disorder, their families, and supporters. METHOD: This study employed Q methodology to systematically and inclusively identify and sort participants' research priorities. Anonymous interest-holders (n

Is iohexol an acceptable alternative to barium sulphate for videofluoroscopy swallowing studies? An observational mixed-methods study using the theoretical framework of acceptability.

PURPOSE: Videofluoroscopic swallowing studies traditionally use barium sulphate and remains the gold standard for evaluating swallowing disorders. Due to a global shortage, this study investigates the acceptability of iohexol as an alternative. METHOD: An observational mixed-method study in a quaternary hospital. Speech-language pathologists rated 294 swallows across 70 videofluoroscopic swallowing studies on a 5-point Likert scale assessing visibility, while blinded to the contrast used (barium or iohexol). Speech-language pathologists experienced with both agents also completed a qualitativ

Child Deictic Gesture Use and Maternal Labeling in Toddlers With Down Syndrome.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the association between the deictic gesture use of toddlers with Down syndrome (DS) and their mothers' use of labels. Relationships between child and maternal deictic gestures; maternal use of labels; and broader, traditional measures of maternal linguistic input were explored. METHOD: Participants were 25 toddlers with DS (14-31 months) and their mothers. Videos of a 15-min mother-child free-play were coded for child and maternal deictic gesture use. All maternal utterances were transcribed and coded to compute the number of complete and in
