INTRODUCTION: The use of a lumbar lordosis orthotic device in the treatment of discogenic low back pain could be a valuable option and rehabilitation tool. The lumbar lordosis brace has been designed to meet these requirements and acts as a reminder to the patient to maintain a physiological lumbar lordosis curvature since it comprises a vertical panel on the chest and a curved rigid shell at the back. This lumbar lordosis brace exerts the necessary degree of compression in the lumbar region and achieves correction of the sagittal plane spine balance to improve postural control of the lumbar s

The mammalian Nell1 gene encodes a protein kinase C-beta1 (PKC-beta1) binding protein that belongs to a new class of cell-signaling molecules controlling cell growth and differentiation. Over-expression of Nell1 in the developing cranial sutures in both human and mouse induces craniosynostosis, the premature fusion of the growing cranial bone fronts. Here, we report the generation, positional cloning and characterization of Nell1(6R), a recessive, neonatal-lethal point mutation in the mouse Nell1 gene, induced by N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea. Nell1(6R) has a T-->A base change that converts a codon fo

In order to investigate the number, types, severity and the various treatments of spinal deformity among children under 10 years old, a retrospective survey of registered patients in the scoliosis clinic at the National Taiwan University Hospital was performed. Between August 1982 and December 1988, there were 41 children who had scoliosis with a Cobb angle larger than 10 degrees and the onset was before 10 years of age. This number accounted for 3.8% of all scoliotic patients during the same time period. Of these children, 19 had idiopathic scoliosis (46.3%), 7 with infantile and 12 with juve

Fat infiltration and atrophy of lumbar muscles are related to spinal degenerative conditions and may cause functional deficits. Spinal alignment exerts biomechanical influence on lumbar intervertebral discs and joints. Our objective was to evaluate if spinopelvic parameters correlate with the lumbar muscle volume and fat infiltration. This is an observational, prospective and cross-sectional study. Ninety-three asymptomatic adult aged 20-40 years were included. Lumbar lordosis (LL), thoracic kyphosis (TK), pelvic incidence (PI), pelvic tilt (PT), sacral slope (SS), thoracolumbar alignment (TL)

BACKGROUND: A precise comparison of supine and standing whole spine alignment in both the coronal and sagittal planes, including the pelvic parameters, has not been reported. Furthermore, previous studies investigated positional differences in the Cobb angle only in young patients with idiopathic scoliosis. The difference in alignment has never been investigated in a population of patients with adult spinal deformity (ASD). In most cases, ASD patients are aware of the symptoms when standing and tend to stoop with back pain, whereas the symptoms disappear when lying on a bed. Therefore, it is i

OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this study were to (1) determine whether sagittal spinal curves are associated with health in epidemiological studies, (2) estimate the strength of such associations, and (3) consider whether these relations are likely to be causal.
METHODS: A systematic critical literature review of epidemiological (cross-sectional, case-control, cohort) studies published before 2008 including studies identified in the CINAHL, EMBASE, Mantis, and Medline databases was performed using a structured checklist and a quality assessment. Level of evidence analysis was performed as outli

Although a mild stooped posture is a hallmark of parkinsonism, extreme trunk forward flexion is not common. This phenomenon was described in different etiological entities and called camptocormia. Other similar presentations called Pisa syndrome and antecollis were described mainly in extrapyramidal disorders. Authors present two cases of probable multiple system atrophy (MSA) with predominant parkinsonism and Pisa syndrome (or camptocormia). Both of them were previously misdiagnosed as idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) and one was reported 1 year earlier. The typical clinical presentation f

The sagittal spine of children with Arnold-Chiari I malformation with or without syringomyelia and associated scoliosis (ACS) has been poorly studied. A retrospective review of scoliosis secondary to ACS from three centers was undertaken. Sagittal and coronal plane variables were measured from standing radiographs. There were 30 ACS children (19 girls, 11 boys) with an average curve of 50 +/- 20 degrees and age of 11.2 +/- 3.2 years. Syringomyelia was present in 26 (87%). The scoliosis was thoracic in 25, thoracolumbar in 3 and lumbar in 2; 18 curves were right and 12 were left. A positive cor

The relationships between the results of pre- and intraoperative motor evoked potential recordings during neuromonitoring and whether idiopathic scoliosis (IS) surgical correction improves the spinal efferent transmission have not been specified in detail. This study aims to compare the results of surface-recorded electromyography (EMG), electroneurography (ENG, M, and F-waves), and especially motor evoked potential (MEP) recordings from tibialis anterior muscle (TA) bilaterally in 353 girls with right idiopathic scoliosis (types 1-3 according to Lenke classification). Background and objectives: Idiopathic scoliosis is a three-dimensional spinal deformity characterized by a lateral curvature exceeding 10 degrees in the frontal plane accompanied by vertebral rotation in the transverse plane. Despite extensive research on genetic and neurological factors, its etiology is uncertain. This prospective observational study aims to investigate the relation between the primitive reflexes, specifically, the asymmetric tonic neck reflex (ATNR), symmetric tonic neck reflex (STNR), and spinal Galant reflex (SGR), which play key roles in early motor development and postur

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is a three-dimensional spinal deformity that often progresses during adolescence. While bracing and exercise therapies are standard conservative treatments, limited research has examined the feasibility of fully online, home-based combined exercise programs and the clinical trends observed during participation -especially in adolescents undergoing brace treatment. This single-arm prospective cohort study (without a control group) aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a six-month, fully online, home-based Schroth-Pilates program combined with brace treatment

Background and Objectives: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) affects individuals aged 10-18 years and is characterized by spinal deformity, three-dimensional axis deformation, and vertebral rotation. Schroth method exercises and braces have been shown to reduce the Cobb angle and halt spinal deformity progression. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of a 12-month, supervised Schroth exercise program on scoliosis severity and quality of life in adolescents with AIS. Materials and Methods: Eighty adolescents with AIS (aged 10-17 years) were prescribed a brace and were divided

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome is a complex and infrequently encountered mitochondrial cytopathy. Patients with MELAS often present with multi-systemic manifestations, making their anesthetic management particularly challenging. In this case report, we describe in detail our anesthetic approach for a 19-year-old male with confirmed MELAS linked to an m.3243A>G mutation. The patient had been diagnosed with MELAS at age 12 following a stroke-like episode and presented with progressive spinal deformities. He exhibited a 70° thoracic spi

BACKGROUND: Postural kyphosis is considered a common spinal alignment disorder characterized by an increased thoracic curvature without structural vertebral abnormalities. Changes in sagittal alignment may affect load distribution throughout the body and alter sensorimotor integration, thereby influencing somatosensory inputs and body perception. However, to our knowledge, no previous study has simultaneously evaluated trunk and plantar tactile sensitivity, proprioception, and body image perception in young adults with postural kyphosis. Understanding these multidimensional alterations is clin

Determination of physiological loads in human lumbar spine is critical for understanding the mechanisms of lumbar diseases and for designing surgical treatments. Computational models have been used widely to estimate the physiological loads of the spine during simulated functional activities. However, various assumptions on physiological factors such as the intra-abdominal pressure (IAP), centers of mass (COMs) of the upper body and lumbar segments, and vertebral centers of rotation (CORs) have been made in modeling techniques. Systematic knowledge of how these assumptions will affect the pred

This is a clinical radiographic study, spanning over three decades, analyzing the three-dimensional (3-D) changes in spine geometry after corrective surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) using four generations of instrumentation systems. The objective of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the evolution of spinal instrumentation over time by measuring the 3-D changes of spinal shape before and after surgical correction of subjects with AIS using Harrington/Harrington-Luque (H/HL) instrumentation, original and recent generations of Cotrel-Dubousset Instrumentation (CDI) with

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Scoliosis is a complex three-dimensional deformity of the spine that leads to lateral curvature, rotation, and imbalance. The severity of scoliosis varies, ranging from mild cases requiring observation to severe, rigid deformities that may necessitate surgical intervention. The surgical management of severe rigid scoliosis carries with it several devastating complications, such as neurological injury, bleeding, implant failure, or loss of correction. The triple-rod technique is an advanced spinal instrumentation method for correcting severe and rigid scoliosis, involving
