Salivary inflammatory biomarkers as a predictor of post-traumatic stress disorder and depressive symptom severity in trauma patients: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Although post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression screening are recommended for traumatic injury patients, routine screening is still uncommon. Salivary inflammatory biomarkers have biological plausibility and potential feasibility and acceptability for screening. This study tested prospective associations between several salivary inflammatory biomarkers (proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α; and C-reactive protein), collected during hospitalization and PTSD and depressive symptoms at 5-month follow-up. METHODS: Adult traumat

Prevalence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Depression and Associated Factors Among Internally Displaced Persons in Al-Galgala, Sudan.

PURPOSE: Conflict and war can have profound psychological and physical consequences, including the displacement of civilians. Sudan currently has the greatest child displacement crisis and the highest number of displaced individuals worldwide. Stressors, such as unemployment, poor socioeconomic conditions, and lack of social integration can increase the risk of developing mental health conditions and worsen pre-existing ones. This study aims to determine the prevalence of PTSD and depression and to investigate the association of sociodemographic and displacement characteristics with both PTSD

Role of ventral tegmental area dopamine neurons in fear memory retention in post-traumatic stress disorder model rats.

Ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopamine (DA) neurons have been found to substantially associate with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) pathology, however, whether and how these DA neurons affect fear memory management in PTSD individuals remains largely unknown. In this study, we utilized auditory conditioned foot-shock to evaluate the fear memory retrieval and retention characteristics in a single prolonged stress-induced PTSD rat model. We employed chemogenetic technology to specifically activate VTA DA neurons to examine the freezing behaviors responding to the conditioned stimuli. In viv

The Incidence of Postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Women Exposed to Adverse Childhood Experiences: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are known contributors to lifelong mental health challenges. Despite studies linking ACEs to increased risk of adverse postpartum mental health outcomes, a systematic review on the occurrence of postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in women with ACEs is lacking. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in seven databases to retrieve studies from inception to January 31, 2024. A random-effects model was used to quantify weighted estimates of postpartum PTSD incidence. Statistical analysis was conducted using R software. RESULTS: S

The Economic Impact of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Among Patients with Systemic Autoimmune Diseases During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The present work aimed to estimate the economic impact of PTSD following COVID-19 in a population of patients affected by systemic autoimmune disease (SAD) using a cost-of-illness approach and accounting for the perspective of society. METHODS: Considering data collected from SAD patients enrolled in a specialized outpatient clinic in the Tuscany region, Italy, generalized linear models and LASSO logistic regression were used to evaluate the impact of PTSD on costs and its relevance as a possible predictor of being a high-cost patient, respectively. RESULTS: Considering 301 SAD p

Suicidal behaviors among refugee women in Jordan: post-traumatic stress disorder, social support and post-displacement stressors.

BACKGROUND: This paper examines the frequency of suicidal behaviors (suicidal ideation or attempt) among a sample of Syrian refugee women living in non-camp settings in Jordan. We asked several questions surrounding suicide and examined the associations between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social connectedness, post-displacement stressors and suicidal behaviors. METHODS: Participants (n = 507) were recruited using a clinic-based systematic sampling from four health clinics throughout Jordan in 2018. We used a multivariable logistic regression to examine the hypothesis of whether pos

The Association Between Doula Care and Childbirth-Related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms: The Mediating Role of Childbirth Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Although the benefits of doula care during childbirth are well-known, its impact on childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD) symptoms are less thoroughly characterized. This study aimed to explore the association between doula care and CB-PTSD symptoms and the potential mediating role of childbirth experience on this association. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted in a hospital in China, enrolling women with singleton live vaginal births. The exposure and primary outcome factors of interest were doula care and CB-PTSD symptoms, with childbirth e

Genome-wide association analyses identify 95 risk loci and provide insights into the neurobiology of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) genetics are characterized by lower discoverability than most other psychiatric disorders. The contribution to biological understanding from previous genetic studies has thus been limited. We performed a multi-ancestry meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies across 1,222,882 individuals of European ancestry (137,136 cases) and 58,051 admixed individuals with African and Native American ancestry (13,624 cases). We identified 95 genome-wide significant loci (80 new). Convergent multi-omic approaches identified 43 potential causal genes, broadly clas

Understanding nightmares after traumatic events in Detroit (UNiTED): prospective associations with interpersonal violence and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms.

ABSTRACTBackground: Research suggests trauma-related nightmares (TRNs) during the acute aftermath of trauma may contribute to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, it is unknown who is most vulnerable to TRNs, which is critical to identify at-risk patients toward whom early nightmare-focused treatments can be targeted to prevent PTSD.Objective: We tested trauma type (interpersonal violence [e.g. assault] vs non-interpersonal trauma [e.g. motor vehicle collision]) as a risk factor for TRNs in a predominantly low-income, Black, urban sample in Detroit, MI, USA.Method: We recruited patie

Emergence Agitation and Anesthetic Considerations in the Management of Patients With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Report of Two Cases and a Review of the Literature.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychological disturbance resulting from exposure to a traumatic experience that lasts more than one month. PTSD in the United States has a lifetime prevalence of 3.4% to 26.9% in civilians and 7.7% to 17.0% in military veterans. Emergence agitation (EA) and emergence delirium (ED) are known phenomena in the postanesthetic period. PTSD is closely associated with EA following anesthesia. In addition, EA in patients with PTSD can be severe and challenging to manage. EA is a risk to both patients and healthcare workers. Furthermore, EA has been shown to

Trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder and violence in the prison population: prospective cohort study of sentenced male prisoners in the UK.

BACKGROUND: Violence is a common problem in prisons. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a prevalent disorder in prison populations, has been identified as a risk factor for violent behaviour in community and military populations. Although cross-sectional associations between PTSD and prison violence have been documented, prospective cohort studies are required. AIMS: To investigate whether PTSD is an independent risk factor for prison violence, and examine the potential role of PTSD symptoms and other trauma sequelae on the pathway from trauma exposure to violent behaviour in prison. Cognitive behavior therapy for adult post-traumatic stress disorder in routine clinical care: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Although different cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) have strong research support for treatment of adult post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) more knowledge is needed about the performance of CBT in routine clinical care. The present study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of CBT for PTSD in adults treated in routine clinical care. Ovid MEDLINE, Embase OVID, and PsycINFO were systematically searched for studies published until the end of May 2022. The effectiveness of CBT, methodological quality, and moderators of treatment outcome were examined, and benchmarked by meta-analytically
