Using microwave ablation in combination with curettage and reconstruction with a vascularized iliac bone graft guided by a three-dimensional printed model for the treatment of a grade III talar giant cell tumor: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Juxta-articular giant cell tumors in the talus are very rare and pose a special problem for reconstruction after aggressive tumor curettage. Currently, vascularized iliac bone graft (VIBG) has proven to improve the outcome of partial talus defect, however, technical difficulty occurs when both the three-dimensional fitting for a large cavity and structural support to the articular surface in the talus are needed. Prior publications have demonstrated that the three-dimensional printing technology can improve surgical efficiency on the vascularized bone graft for extremity and mandib

Radioscaphoid Pressures and Carpal Kinematics After Wrist Ligament Sectioning.

BACKGROUND: Scapholunate dissociation is usually the result of failure of multiple wrist ligaments. With continued use other structures attenuate, which results in change in position of the carpal bones. It is presumed that load characteristics in the wrist joint change with changes in carpal bone position. This is thought to result in localized pressure overload and arthritic change. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate radioscaphoid joint pressures and carpal kinematics after sectioning specific wrist ligaments. Our hypotheses are that there would be increased scaph

A vagal reflex evoked by airway closure.

Airway integrity must be continuously maintained throughout life. Sensory neurons guard against airway obstruction and, on a moment-by-moment basis, enact vital reflexes to maintain respiratory function1,2. Decreased lung capacity is common and life-threatening across many respiratory diseases, and lung collapse can be acutely evoked by chest wall trauma, pneumothorax or airway compression. Here we characterize a neuronal reflex of the vagus nerve evoked by airway closure that leads to gasping. In vivo vagal ganglion imaging revealed dedicated sensory neurons that detect airway compression but

Syntaxin of plants71 plays essential roles in plant development and stress response via regulating pH homeostasis.

SYP71, a plant-specific Qc-SNARE with multiple subcellular localization, is essential for symbiotic nitrogen fixation in nodules in Lotus, and is implicated in plant resistance to pathogenesis in rice, wheat and soybean. Arabidopsis SYP71 is proposed to participate in multiple membrane fusion steps during secretion. To date, the molecular mechanism underlying SYP71 regulation on plant development remains elusive. In this study, we clarified that AtSYP71 is essential for plant development and stress response, using techniques of cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, and trans

Anatomical damage caused by Bacillus thuringiensis variety israelensis in yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti (L.) larvae revealed by micro-computed tomography.

With micro-computed tomography techniques, using the single-distance phase-retrieval algorithm phase contrast, we reconstructed enhanced rendered images of soft tissues of Aedes aeqypti fourth instar larvae after Bti treatment. In contrast to previous publications based on conventional microscopy, either optical or electron microscopy, which were limited to partial studies, mostly in the form of histological sections, here we show for the first time the effects of Bti on the complete internal anatomy of an insect. Using 3D rendered images it was possible to study the effect of the bacterium in

Rationally Engineering a CuO/Pd@SiO2 Core-Shell Catalyst with Isolated Bifunctional Pd and Cu Active Sites for n-Butylamine Controllable Decomposition.

Volatile organic amines are a category of typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs) extensively presented in industrial exhausts causing serious harm to the atmospheric environment and human health. Monometallic Pd and Cu-based catalysts are commonly adopted for catalytic destruction of hazardous organic amines, but their applications are greatly limited by the inevitable production of toxic amide and NOx byproducts and inferior low-temperature activity. Here, a CuO/Pd@SiO2 core-shell-structured catalyst with diverse functionalized active sites was creatively developed, which realized the tota

Imaging-Based Reporter Systems to Define CVB-Induced Membrane Remodeling in Living Cells.

Enteroviruses manipulate host membranes to form replication organelles, which concentrate viral and host factors to allow for efficient replication. However, this process has not been well-studied in living cells throughout the course of infection. To define the dynamic process of enterovirus membrane remodeling of major secretory pathway organelles, we have developed plasmid-based reporter systems that utilize viral protease-dependent release of a nuclear-localized fluorescent protein from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane during infection, while retaining organelle-specific fluorescent

Epidemiology of childhood malignant mediastinal masses and clinical factors associated with intensive care unit admission: A Singapore experience.

AIM: Majority of mediastinal masses in children are malignant. These masses are complex to manage as they have a risk of compression to surrounding structures. Many of these children have to be managed in the intensive care unit (ICU). Hence we sought to evaluate the local epidemiology of malignant mediastinal masses in children and their clinical presentation, and identified factors associated with ICU admission so that at-risk patients may be identified early. METHODS: This study is a retrospective review of institutional case records of 56 children below 18 years of age from 2000 to 2015 w

Building MOF Nanocomposites with Oxidized Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanospheres: The Effect of Framework Geometry on the Structural Heterogeneity.

Composite of two MOFs, copper-based Cu-BTC (HKUST-1) and zirconium-based Zr-BDC (UiO-66), with oxidized graphitic carbon nitride nanospheres were synthesized. For comparison, pure MOFs were also obtained. The surface features were analyzed using x-ray diffraction (XRD), sorption of nitrogen, thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The incorporation of oxidized g-C3N4 to the Cu-BTC framework caused the formation of a heterogeneous material of a hierarchical pores structure, but a decreased surface area when compared to that of the parent MOF. In the case of UiO-66, functionali

Catalytically Active Single-Chain Polymeric Nanoparticles: Exploring Their Functions in Complex Biological Media.

Dynamic single-chain polymeric nanoparticles (SCPNs) are intriguing, bioinspired architectures that result from the collapse or folding of an individual polymer chain into a nanometer-sized particle. Here we present a detailed biophysical study on the behavior of dynamic SCPNs in living cells and an evaluation of their catalytic functionality in such a complex medium. We first developed a number of delivery strategies that allowed the selective localization of SCPNs in different cellular compartments. Live/dead tests showed that the SCPNs were not toxic to cells while spectral imaging revealed

Antimicrobial and biophysical properties of surfactant supplemented with an antimicrobial peptide for treatment of bacterial pneumonia.

Antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections represent an emerging health concern in clinical settings, and a lack of novel developments in the pharmaceutical pipeline is creating a "perfect storm" for multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been suggested as future therapeutics for these drug-resistant bacteria, since they have potent broad-spectrum activity, with little development of resistance. Due to the unique structure of the lung, bacterial pneumonia has the additional problem of delivering antimicrobials to the site of infection. One potential solutio

A systematic review of the use of expandable cages in the cervical spine.

Expandable vertebral body replacement cages (VBRs) have been widely used for reconstruction of the thoracolumbar spine following corpectomy. However, their use in the cervical spine is less common, and currently, no expandable cages on the market are cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in the cervical spine. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review on the use of expandable cages in the treatment of cervical spine pathology with a focus on fusion rates, deformity correction, complications, and indications.
