Crossbred calves (Bos indicus x Bos taurus) were immunized with a fractionated midgut supernate antigen (GS-F Ag from Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum). The first inoculation on day 0 was given intramuscularly after emulsification with Freund's complete adjuvant; the second was given subcutaneously on day 14 in incomplete Freund's adjuvant; and the third on day 35 was given subcutaneously without adjuvant. Each injection comprised 1 mg of antigen protein. Ten days after the last inoculation, the immunized calves were challenged simultaneously with 1000 larvae and 20 pairs (20 males and 20 female

The responses of adult Amblyomma variegatum ticks released from various distances to different doses of the synthetic attraction-aggregation-attachment pheromone (AAAP) (made up of orthonitrophenol, methyl salicylate and nonanoic acid in paraffin oil), dispensed from the center of circular field plots, were studied in the presence or absence of elevated levels of CO2. Up to 90% of the ticks released were attracted to the pheromone source in the presence of CO2 within 3h. CO2 alone was unattractive, similar to previous findings in Zimbabwe, but unlike results from a Caribbean A. variegatum popu

Nymphs of Ixodes ricinus (Linnaeus, 1758), I. scapularis Say, 1821, and I. pacificus Cooley & Kohls, 1943 are epidemiologically the most dangerous stage for transmission of Lyme disease to humans. Many factors play a role in the epidemiological significance of the nymphs. In this study, we address the question of whether nymphs show a greater tendency than adults to accept humans as their host. To evaluate this, we have compared the host acceptance behavior of nymphs and adults (males and females) with respect to a human in Rambouillet forest, a focus of Lyme disease. Individual ticks (nymph,

Pure strains of Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina and Anaplasma marginale were isolated from cattle infected with all 3 species as well as Theileria sp. and Eperythrozoon teganodes, using only transmission by the tick, Boophilus microplus. Unengorged adult ticks transferred to susceptible cattle transmitted A. marginale, but not Babesia. Engorged adults gave rise to progeny that transmitted Babesia, B. bovis by larvae and B. bigemina by male ticks. The Theileria and E. teganodes were not transmitted by the ticks and thus did not appear in calves used for isolating the pure strains of Babesia and

INTRODUCTION: Since 2010, six cases of Atlantic rainforest spotted fever (ARSF) have been confirmed and reported in Brazil, a tick-borne disease caused by Rickettsia parkeri strain Atlantic rainforest and associated with the tick Amblyomma ovale. So far, none of the cases have been associated with death. One of the cases occurred in 2018 in the municipality of Ilhéus, Bahia state, that is in Atlantic Forest Biome. In this study, we report the first confirmed outbreak of ARSF in Brazil, with three new cases associated with tick bites when entering Atlantic Forest areas in the same municipality,

The study of the structure of ectoparasite communities in wild mammals is fundamental, as it contributes to comprehend the ecological and health dynamics of these systems. This study analyzed the structure of ectoparasite communities in wild carnivores and rodents in central Chihuahua, Mexico, considering biological variables of the hosts (species and sex) and environmental factors such as temperature in one year cycle. A total of 745 ectoparasites were collected, including 738 fleas (seven species, two families), four lice (two species), and one tick species. Seasonal variation and host famil

The health of a population of free-ranging tapirs (Tapirus bairdii) inhabiting Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica, was assessed as part of an ongoing ecologic study. Nineteen tapirs were immobilized between March 1997 and February 2000, and samples of blood, skin biopsies, and ectoparasites were collected. Ticks were identified as Amblyomma oblongoguttatum or A. coelebs. Hematology and serum biochemistry results suggest statistically significant differences between free-ranging and captive populations that should be interpreted with caution in view of inherent environmental differences betwee

A KAP survey on ticks and tick-borne diseases (TTBDs) among cattle farmers of Maharashtra state, India was conducted. A total of 137 farmers were surveyed with majority aged 41-50, having 6-20 cattle. Education-wise, most of the farmers had high school or college education. Land holding patterns showed majority of farmers have small farms. Farmers preferred high-yielding exotic breeds. Participants observed ticks on livestock, grasses, and forest areas. Ticks were reported in warm and cold regions, affecting cattle productivity. Farmers showed mixed awareness on tick-borne diseases and managem

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease, caused primarily by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, is the most prevalent vector-borne disease in the United States. Treatment of rodent pathogen reservoirs with an oral acaricide may suppress the production of infected host-seeking ticks posing a risk for human infection. A previous study showed that an oral fipronil bait effectively controlled larval Ixodes scapularis ticks on white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) up to 15 days post-bait exposure. The present study expands upon this finding by exposing group-housed white-footed mice to fipronil bait under simu

Amitraz is an acaricide and insecticide used to treat ticks, which infest domestic animals in developing countries. Because of its widespread use, it is one of the common poisons unintentionally consumed by infants and children when left unsupervised. A 3-year-old boy was brought with unintentional consumption of Amitraz. On examination, he was found to be progressively drowsy, with an irregular pulse, bradycardia, and hypotension. He was treated with atropine, intravenous fluids, and dopamine infusion; hemodynamic stability was achieved within 36 hours after ingestion. Amitraz is an unusual b

Morgellons disease is an emerging skin disease characterized by formation of dermal filaments associated with multisystemic symptoms and tick-borne illness. Some clinicians hypothesize that these often colorful dermal filaments are textile fibers, either self-implanted by patients or accidentally adhering to lesions, and conclude that patients with this disease have delusions of infestation. We present histological observations and electron microscopic imaging from representative Morgellons disease samples revealing that dermal filaments in these cases are keratin and collagen in composition a

The goal of this study was to evaluate the role of habitat in determining ectoparasite distribution of Peromyscus leucopus. We tested the hypothesis that ectoparasite occurrence is associated with particular host environments and this association is stronger for ectoparasites with limited interactions (i.e., ticks) than those with frequent interactions (i.e., lice). Ectoparasites from three different groups (Acari, Siphonaptera, and Phthiraptera) were collected from P. leucopus inhabiting a number of forested habitats in southern Michigan. Measurements of plant species structure and compositio

Cattle fever ticks, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and R. (B.) annulatus, are major constraints on cattle production worldwide because they directly reduce productivity and transmit the agents of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis. Despite their shared hosts and similar vector capacity, their environmental preferences and the extent to which they occupy comparable climatic space remain unclear. We compiled historical occurrence records from global sources and, after quality control and spatial thinning, retained 2338 records for R. (B.) microplus and 527 for R. (B.) annulatus. Using clima

Soft ticks in the genus Ornithodoros occur throughout the Mojave Desert in southern Nevada, southeastern California, and parts of southwestern Utah and northwestern Arizona, USA, and are frequently observed parasitizing Mojave desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii). However, limited research exists examining the relationship between ticks and desert tortoises. Mojave desert tortoises are listed as threatened by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and as such, their populations are monitored and individual tortoise health is routinely assessed. These health assessments document the presence and ab

Controlling Rhipicephalus microplus is among the most significant challenges for livestock production worldwide. The indiscriminate use of acaricides stimulates the selection of resistant tick populations and is therefore ineffective. Understanding the molecular foundations of resistance could help inform the search for new alternatives for tick control. Although the ovary has been suggested as a relevant target organ for tick control, there are few existing studies that focus on tick ovarian tissue. Therefore, we conducted a comparative proteomic analysis on ovaries of R. microplus strains wi

The seasonal dynamics and distribution of ticks play a pivotal role in the epidemiology of tick-borne diseases. The objective of this study was to establish the seasonal abundance and species richness of questing ixodid ticks on Amathole Montane Grassland camps grazed by sheep. Ticks questing for hosts were collected monthly for a period of three years by dragging flannel strips attached to a wooden spar over the vegetation. At each occasion, six replicate drag-samples were made in camps grazed by sheep. Of the questing ticks (n = 14 891) collected from the vegetation, the most abundant larvae

Rhipicephalus microplus, also known as the cattle tick, is the parasite with the greatest impact on cattle in Brazil. The most common method for controlling this tick is the application of synthetic chemical acaricides, especially ivermectin, which belongs to the group of macrocyclic lactones (MLs). However, because ivermectin is widely used, there is concern about the development of cross-resistance within this chemical class. Thus, engorged females were collected from farms with a history of resistance to ivermectin, which was the only one among the MLs that was used as an endectocide drug.

Accelerated frequency of recreational travel, globalization of business, and legal and illegal plant and animal trades have contributed to enduring introductions of exotic ticks into the United States. We herein report a new incursion of a female Rhipicephalus capensis on a human traveler returning to Connecticut from South Africa. Natural distribution of R. capensis is restricted to the Western Cape Province and southwestern portion of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, an area called the Fynbos Biome, and adults of this species primarily parasitize large, wild ungulate hosts.
