Rapid on-site evaluation and cell blocks: getting the most from the least invasive method in cytopathology.

INTRODUCTION: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) sampling is a minimally invasive procedure done to identify the pathology behind superficial and deep-seated lesions. Rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) can be an adjunct to the FNACs. Our study aimed to identify the role of ROSE in diagnostic adequacy and to check the benefit of cell block (CB)/cell buttons prepared from the ROSE samples. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted where all patients referred for FNAC were included. ROSE using 1% aqueous toluidine blue stain and CB/cell button preparations were done for the identi

Neurobehavioral sex-related differences in Nf1+/- mice: female show a "camouflaging"-type behavior.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an inherited neurocutaneous disorder associated with neurodevelopmental disorders including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This condition has been associated with an increase of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurotransmission and, consequently, an excitation/inhibition imbalance associated with autistic-like behavior in both human and animal models. Here, we explored the influence of biological sex in the GABAergic system and behavioral alterations induced by the Nf1+/- mutation in a murine model. METHODS: Juvenile male and female Nf1+/- mice an

Effects of photobiomodulation with blue Light Emitting Diode (LED) on the healing of skin burns.

The management of skin burns is still challenging. Among the therapeutic methods used, there are topical treatments with pharmacological and herbal agents, low-intensity therapeutic ultrasound, use of biomaterials, reconstructive techniques and photobiomodulation therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of photobiomodulation with blue Light Emitting Diode (LED) on burn healing. Fifty Wistar rats were divided into control (CTRL) (n = 25) and blue LED (LED) (n = 25), with subgroups (n = 5) for each time of euthanasia (7, 14, 21, 28 and 32 days). Treated animals were daily irrad

Glucagon-Like Peptide-2 Ameliorates Age-Associated Bone Loss and Gut Barrier Dysfunction in Senescence-Accelerated Mouse Prone 6 Mice.

INTRODUCTION: Senile osteoporosis is one of the most common age-related diseases worldwide. Glucagon like peptide-2 (GLP-2), a naturally occurring gastrointestinal peptide, possesses therapeutic effects on bone loss in postmenopausal women and ovariectomized rats. However, the role of GLP-2 in senile osteoporosis and underlying mechanisms has not been explored. METHODS: GLP-2 was subcutaneously injected into the 6-month-old male senile osteoporosis model of senescence-accelerated mouse prone 6 (SAMP6) mice for 6 weeks. SAMP6 subjected to normal saline and senescence-accelerated mouse resistan

Angular limb deformities due to distal radial physeal osteochondrosis in farmed deer stags in New Zealand.

CASE HISTORY: Three different farms reported cases of angular limb deformities (ALD) in rising 2-year-old velvet, mostly red deer (Cervus elaphus), stags with the earliest recorded cases occurring in 2010. Farm 1 reported a prevalence of 10-35%, farm 2, 5-11.5%, and farm 3, 2-5%. Farms 1, 2, and 3 are located in South Canterbury, northern Southland, and the Waikato, respectively. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Affected animals developed ALD, with predominantly varus forelimb (bowed) deformities. On all farms serum calcium and phosphorus concentrations in affected animals were normal. Serum and liver copp

Sophoricoside from Styphnolobium japonicum improves experimental atopic dermatitis in mice.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal immune responses, specifically excessive differentiation of Th2 cells, are associated with the development of atopic dermatitis (AD). Sophoricoside, the genistein-4'-β-D-glucoside isolated from Styphnolobium japonicum, has previously demonstrated anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects along with IL-3 and IL-5 inhibitory activities. Therefore, we speculated that sophoricoside could regulate AD by regulating abnormal immune responses. PURPOSE: To investigate the role of sophoricoside on AD-like allergic skin inflammation induced by ovalbumin (OVA) or 2,4,6-trinitro

Quantitative assessment of tumor-associated tissue eosinophilia and mast cells in tumor proper and lymph nodes of oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common cancer of the oral cavity. Tumor stage, thickness, lymph node metastasis (LNM), extranodal spread, perineural invasion, tumor differentiation, mutations, human papillomavirus infection and tumor microenvironment are independent prognostic indicators of OSCC. However, clinically, among all factors, LNM is considered an important prognostic factor in OSCC as it not only determines the stage of disease but also the strongest independent factor which predicts recurrence of disease. Further research proves that there are several bio

NG2-proteoglycan-dependent contributions of oligodendrocyte progenitors and myeloid cells to myelin damage and repair.

BACKGROUND: The NG2 proteoglycan is expressed by several cell types in demyelinated lesions and has important effects on the biology of these cells. Here we determine the cell-type-specific roles of NG2 in the oligodendrocyte progenitor cell (OPC) and myeloid cell contributions to demyelination and remyelination. METHODS: We have used Cre-Lox technology to dissect the cell-type-specific contributions of NG2 to myelin damage and repair. Demyelination is induced by microinjection of 1 % lysolecithin into the spinal cord white matter of control, OPC-specific NG2-null (OPC-NG2ko), and myeloid-spe

Endocytoscopic observation of various esophageal lesions at ×600: can nuclear abnormality be recognized?

Endocytoscopy (ECS) is a novel endoscopic technique that allows detailed diagnostic examination of the gastrointestinal tract at the cellular level. We previously reported that use of ECS at ×380 magnification (GIF-Y0002) allowed a pathologist to diagnose esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) with high sensitivity (94.9%) but considerably low specificity (46.7%) because this low magnification did not reveal information about nuclear abnormality. In the present study, we used the same magnifying endoscope to observe various esophageal lesions, but employed digital 1.6-fold magnification to

Mast cells and MMP-9 in the lamina propria during eruption of rat molars: quantitative and immunohistochemical evaluation.

During the active tooth eruption process, structural changes in the lamina propria are necessary to provide extracellular matrix remodelling and for the establishment of the eruptive pathway. A large number of resident cells, recruited cells and proteases have been demonstrated in the eruptive process, but the participation of MMP-9 and mast cells has not yet been demonstrated. In this study, we set out to evaluate the intensity of MMP-9 immunoexpression, the frequency of mast cells and the correlation between the incidence of mast cells and bone resorption in different phases of tooth eruptio
