Physiologic study of the guinea pig model of endolymphatic hydrops has been used to better understand the manifestations of Meniere's disease. Quantitative vestibular function testing demonstrates some changes in the hydrops subjects, especially if an additional stress such as postural inversion is imposed. Understanding the hydrodynamic changes on the endolymphatic and perilymphatic fluids by the hydrops condition as well as postural inversion may be useful in explaining the vestibular findings. These pressure effects may alter the micromechanics of the inner ear or possibly induce a relative

This case report describes outcomes of three cases with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) who presented with an inability to state the symptoms of BPPV. The diagnosis is driven by patient-reported symptoms during positional testing or movement changes. People with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) can have BPPV but report no symptoms of spinning (vestibular agnosia). The case report demonstrates that functional improvements are made in patients with vestibular agnosia. All cases were seen in an inpatient rehabilitation unit. Case 1 presented with a bilateral TBI with a daily Agitated B

This report is a presentation of an approach to the prediction of cerebellar-pontine (C-P) angle tumors and four peripheral vestibular diseases from a mathematical statistical point of view. The present study was performed in an attempt to quantify multidimensional, quantitative data. The data analyzed were from a total of 143 patients with C-P angle tumors, Menière's disease, sudden deafness, vestibular neuronitis, and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Tests were carried out mainly on otoneurological parameters. By means of discriminant analysis as employed in the quantification me

Twelve patients with auditory and/or vestibular symptoms were examined with a gadolinium magnetic resonance imaging (Gd-MRI) study. They all were found to have enhancement of only the endolymphatic duct/sac structures of the inner ear. Most of these findings were unilateral, but a few were bilateral. The patients underwent auditory, vestibular, and blood tests in an attempt to clarify the reason for this abnormal enhancement. Several specific etiologies were identified, but several cases had unknown causes. In this article we review the concept of inflammation of the inner ear structures with

The specific features of neurinoma of the auditory nerve were analysed clinically in 21 patients whose ages ranged from 12 to 18 years. Neurinoma of the auditory nerve located in the cerebellopontine area in children and adolescents has some specific features distinguishing it from that in adults. For instance, its incidence among boys is the same as that among girls. In most patients the neurinomas grew medially and orally, which caused gradual development of hydrocephalic-hypertensive symptoms and only in the far advanced stage of the disease did local symptoms in the form of affection of th

Vestibulo-oculomotor responses from 33 patients with either peripheral labyrinthine or central pathology were compared using the standardized Fitzgerald-Hallpike bithermal caloric and harmonic accelerations. In numerous cases (40%), patients with normal caloric responses reflected abnormalities in either their phase relationships or labyrinthine preponderance to sinusoidal acceleration. Results clearly indicate that harmonic acceleration provides additional information to the clinician in the evaluation of vestibulo-oculomotor pathology that is not reflected in the responses to standard calori

Ménière's disease is associated with hydrops of the inner ear endolymphatic space, and histopathologically, the cochlea and vestibule are usually involved. We used gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging and measured cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and the gain in the utricular induced linear vestibulo-ocular reflex to test the hypothesis that vestibular hydrops in Ménière's disease patients is associated with otolith organ dysfunction. We evaluated 21 patients diagnosed with unilateral definitive Ménière's disease using gadolinium magnetic resonance imaging to

An etiologic concept linking an impaired axial motor control system to the structural deformity of idiopathic scoliosis (ISc) is proposed. Postural studies reveal that during quiet stance, adaptation is marked in conditions associated with visual control of sway, particularly of lateral sway; during imposed perturbations of the body, destabilized postural reactions are pronounced in tests requiring visual-vestibular coupling. Observations of visual and/or vestibular generated eye movements indicate ocular instability among a high proportion of the ISc. Previously, the authors argued that a dir

Postural control requires the sensory integration of visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive signals. In the absence of vision, either by blindfolding or in blind individuals, balance performance is typically poorer than with sight. Previous research has suggested that despite showing compensatory vestibular and proprioceptive processing during upright standing, balance performance in blind individuals is overall lower than in sighted controls with eyes open. The present study tested whether balance training, which places demands on vestibular and proprioceptive self-motion perception, improves

INTRODUCTION: Falls are associated with hearing loss, which might be explained by the onset of gait disorders. The objective of this study was to examine the association between Age-Related Hearing Loss (ARHL) and gait disorders assessed with GAITrite® walkway in a population of fallers aged 75 and over while accounting for the vestibular function.
METHODS: We examined data from 53 older patients (mean 84.2 ± 5.1 years; 64% women) included after a GAITrite® walkway assessment together with hearing and vestibular tests. People with high-frequency hearing loss, higher than 10% of the age and se

Caloric stimulation is one of few clinically proven tests assessing the function of each vestibule separately in neonates. Its results represent the continuity of vestibulo-ocular reflex, beginning in the lateral vestibular canal. Vestibular disorders are diagnosed in 20 to even 70% neonates with sensorineural hearing loss with the prevalence of individuals with profound and acquired deafness. 58 high risk of hearing defect infants were included in the study. Their age ranged from 3 to 6 months. A group of 27 healthy controls with negative history concerning sensorineural hearing loss risk fac
