In this paper, we present 3 patients who had previously undergone pneumonectomy and then presented with a spontaneous pneumothorax. Thymomas are rare mediastinal tumors in pediatrics and cystic thymoma, is characterized by a predominantly cystic formation, is extremely rare. This report describes a 13-year-old girl with cystic thymoma, who was treated by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. The microscopic findings were characteristic of cystic thymoma. The literature on cystic thymoma is reviewed here and the clinical characteristics of cystic thymoma are discussed.

We report the case of a 70-year-old man with dense pleural adhesions who underwent an excision of a mediastinal bronchogenic cyst by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) through an extrapleural approach. The VATS approach for the diagnostic and therapeutic excision of a mediastinal tumor is easier and safer than an intrapleural approach if a patient has dense pleural adhesions.

Although fewer lymph nodes are dissected with video-assisted thoracic surgery than with open lobectomy, thoracoscopic lobectomy is increasingly becoming the preferred surgical approach for early-stage lung cancers. The endoscopic surgical spacer SECUREA™ is a medical device that has been effectively employed in laparoscopic surgery, but no study has evaluated its efficacy in thoracoscopic surgery. In this report, we demonstrate the utility of SECUREA for complete thoracoscopic mediastinal lymph node dissection in patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

PURPOSE: With secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) associated with emphysema, lesions responsible for pneumothorax can be located anywhere along the lung surface. Among such lesions, ruptured bullae at the azygoesophageal recess (AER) have received little attention thus far.
