BACKGROUND: Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) is an emerging alternative to visual identification of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) during surgery. Its goal is to reduce RLN injury and vocal cord paralysis (VCP). However, evidence has been inconsistent concerning its benefits. This study aims to assess IONM's efficacy in preventing RLN injury during robotic thyroidectomy (RoT).
METHODS: This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A comprehensive literature search was conducted across four electronic datab

OBJECTIVE: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a group of childhood-onset chronic neuropsychiatric disorders characterized by tics, i.e., repetitive, sudden, and involuntary movements or vocalizations, which is often associated with various psychopathological and/or behavioral comorbidities, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders and have a worse prognosis. The mechanism of TS is still not clear. The relationship between immune activation, neuroinflammation, and neuropsychiatric disorders has attracted much

Background and Objectives: The efficiency and optimal voice rest period following phonosurgery remains debatable. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a safe and cheap alternative to many bioactive agents being studied on animal models, and is already in use in many medical areas. We investigate the short-term effects of PRP and voice rest on voice outcomes following phonosurgery as an alternative to voice rest alone. Materials and Methods: A prospective single-blinded pilot study was conducted. Sixteen patients with a diagnosis of vocal fold cyst and polyps were included, forming equal groups (PRP a

Innovation in the field of exogenous surfactant therapy continues more than two decades after the drug became commercially available. One such innovation, lung lavage using dilute surfactant, has been investigated in both laboratory and clinical settings as a treatment for meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS). Studies in animal models of MAS have affirmed that dilute surfactant lavage can remove meconium from the lung, with resultant improvement in lung function. In human infants both non-randomised studies and two randomised controlled trials have demonstrated a potential benefit of dilute surf

Though it may seem simple, object naming is a complex multistage process that can be impaired by lesions at various sites of the language network. Individuals with neurodegenerative disorders of language, known as primary progressive aphasias (PPA), have difficulty with naming objects, and instead frequently say "I don't know" or fail to give a vocal response at all, known as an omission. Whereas other types of naming errors (paraphasias) give clues as to which aspects of the language network have been compromised, the mechanisms underlying omissions remain largely unknown. In this study, we u

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: South Americans natives have extensively used the toad "kururu" to reduce/treat skin infections, cutaneous lesions and sores. They release secretions rich in bufadienolides, polyhydroxy steroids with well-documented cardiotonic and antiproliferative actions, but in vivo antitumoral evaluations in mammals are rare, and toxicological safety has been left in second place.
AIMS OF THE STUDY: This investigation used in silico, in vitro and in vivo tools to evaluate acute and subacute toxic effects of marinobufagin and the anticancer action in tumor-bearing mice mode

When guinea pig pups are isolated in a novel environment, they show an initial active phase of behavioral responsiveness characterized by vocalizations and locomotor activity. One earlier study found that after about an hour, pups began to exhibit a second, passive stage of responsiveness marked by a crouched stance, eye-closing, and extensive piloerection. The present experiments tested the hypothesis that the responses during the second, passive stage result from the isolation experience activating pathways underlying the acute phase response, i.e., that behaviors of the second stage represe

Accurate timing is a critical aspect of motor control, yet the temporal structure of many mature behaviors emerges during learning from highly variable exploratory actions. How does a developing brain acquire the precise control of timing in behavioral sequences? To investigate the development of timing, we analyzed the songs of young juvenile zebra finches. These highly variable vocalizations, akin to human babbling, gradually develop into temporally stereotyped adult songs. We find that the durations of syllables and silences in juvenile singing are formed by a mixture of two distinct modes

Clinical voice disorders pose significant communication-related challenges to patients. The purpose of this study was to quantify the rate of apoptosis and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) signaling in vocal fold epithelial cells in response to increasing time-doses and cycle-doses of vibration. 20 New Zealand white breeder rabbits were randomized to three groups of time-doses of vibration exposure (30, 60, 120min) or a control group (120min of vocal fold adduction and abduction). Estimated cycle-doses of vocal fold vibration were extrapolated based on mean fundamental frequency. Laryngeal

Zebra finches produce a learned song that is rich in harmonic structure and highly stereotyped. More is generally known about how birds learn and produce this song than how they perceive it. Here, zebra finches were trained with operant techniques to discriminate changes in natural and synthetic song motifs. Results show that zebra finches are quite insensitive to changes to the overall envelope of the motif since they were unable to discriminate more than a doubling in inter-syllable interval durations. By contrast, they were quite sensitive to changes in individual syllables. A series of tes

Vocalization generated by the application of a noxious stimulus is an integrative response related to the affective-motivational component of pain. The rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) plays an important role in descending pain modulation, and opiates play a major role in modulation of the antinociception mediated by the RVM. Further, it has been suggested that morphine mediates antinociception indirectly, by inhibition of tonically active GABAergic neurons. The current study evaluated the effects of the opioids and GABA agonists and antagonists in the RVM on an affective-motivational pain m

Steroid sex hormones induce dramatic seasonal changes in reproductive related behaviors and their underlying neural substrates in seasonally breeding vertebrates. For example, in adult white-crowned sparrows, increased Spring photoperiod raises circulating testosterone, causing morphological and electrophysiological changes in song-control nuclei, which modify song behavior for the breeding season. We investigated how photoperiod and steroid hormones induce these changes in morphology, electrophysiology, and behavior. Neurons in a song premotor nucleus, the robust nucleus of the arcopallium (R

Laryngeal paralysis is a relatively common cause of upper airway obstruction in middle-aged to older, large-breed dogs; however, it is rare in the cat. The purpose of this study is to describe a series of cats diagnosed with laryngeal paralysis treated by unilateral arytenoid lateralization. Fourteen cats met the criteria of the study. Intraoperative and postoperative complications were seen in 21% (three of 14) and 50% (seven of 14) of cases, respectively. Median duration of follow-up was 11 months (range 3 weeks to 8 years). None of these cats had recurrence of clinical signs. Based on this

Hydatid disease of the skull base is extremely rare, and intracranial extension of hydatid cysts through the skull base is even rarer. We report an interesting case of a 42-year-old man who presented with features of right vocal cord palsy. The diagnosis of hydatid cyst was made based on his history and on pre-operative MRI and was confirmed by surgery and histopathological examination.

Nerve terminals which resembled the autonomic nerve varicosities were found at all neuromuscular junctions of the feline intrinsic laryngeal muscles after 21 months of unilateral laryngeal paralysis. The structure of muscle fibers was preserved throughout this period, although there was no evidence of regeneration of transected recurrent laryngeal nerve. In the cricothyroid muscle, misdirected reinnervation was recognized in the different pathways from the other intrinsic laryngeal muscles.

Sectioning of the right recurrent nerve was done in 5 mongrel dogs under general anaesthesia. The distal stump was anastomosed with the ansa cervicalis nerve branch to the sternothyroid muscle. Three to 5 months later the vocal cord movements during light and very light anaesthesia were videorecorded. Under light anaesthesia contraction and medial bulging of the reinnervated right vocal cord occurred in 4 of the dogs. Under very light anaesthesia there was also some adduction of the right vocal cord in these 4 dogs. The right recurrent nerve was then sectioned proximally to the anastomosis and

Some unfortunate patients suffer disorders which in one way or another, usually neurologically, severely restrict the larynx in its role as a protector of the lower airway. Aspiration ensues, and unless it can be successfully managed, repeated episodes of a violent pneumonitis may lead to terminal chest problems. In some patients, even the cuffed tracheostomy tubes of new and improved design do not adequately prevent aspiration over an extended time intervel, as evidenced by repeated bouts of aspiration pneumonia despite these cuffed tubes and despite optimal intensive care. For these patients
