Effect of finger-ball friction on upper limb movement during fastball pitching in baseball.

This study investigated the effect of the friction between the ball and fingertips (finger-ball friction) on upper limb movement during four-seam fastball pitching in terms of the centrifugal force acting on the ball. Eight skilled pitchers threw four-seam fastballs at approximately 130 km/h toward a target behind the home base. Water was applied as a low-friction condition and rosin powder was applied as a high-friction condition between the fingertips and the ball. Hand velocity and pitching radius (i.e., radius of the motion trajectory of the hand) were calculated from motion capture data.

A Sintering Method for Adhesive Sensor-Embedded Athletic Wear in Amphibious Environments.

The application of wearable electronic devices and electronic textiles is growing, leading to a strong demand for high-performance flexible sensors. However, the development of flexible amphibious sensors still faces challenges. Here, we introduce a high-performance amphibious strain sensor that incorporates a liquid-metal-based conductor with excellent adhesion properties. By utilizing a silicone rubber-assisted stretching and sintering strategy, we effectively prevent the self-adhesion of the sensor, enhancing both the usability and performance of the sensor. The device consists of a metal p

MXene-assisted construction of versatile cellulose-based aerogels with multilayered structure for piezoresistive sensing and contaminant adsorption.

Developing a compressible, ultralight, conductive, and hydrophobic biomass-based aerogel with multifunctional characteristics is greatly desirable nowadays. Herein, cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/Ti3C2Tx (MXene)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite aerogels have been designed via a facile bidirectional freezing process, followed by chemical vapor deposition treatment. Benefiting from the porous architecture, chemical crosslinking and hydrogen-bonding between CNF, PVA and MXene, the aerogels exhibited oriented lamellar texture, endowing it with ultralow density, excellent compressibility, conductivity

Skin somatosensory system inspired gelatin-based organohydrogel electronic skin for infant hazard alarms.

Multi-functional electronic skin (e-skin) demonstrates immense potential for applications in physiological monitoring and human-computer interaction. However, achieving reliable multi-modal sensing in complex environments and hazard alarms for infants remains a significant challenge. Drawing inspiration from the skin's somatosensory system, we herein present an innovative multi-modal sensing organohydrogel, fabricated by incorporating gelatin, laponite, and LiCl into a copolymer network within a glycerol/water binary solvent. The designed organohydrogel exhibits skin-like composition and modul

An Anti-Freezing Ionic Conductive Hydrogel for Strain Sensing and Energy Harvesting Devices.

Hydrogels with excellent flexibility and conductivity have attracted intensive attention in wearable human monitoring and energy harvesting devices. However, hydrogels containing plenty of water inevitably freeze at subzero temperatures, which deteriorates flexibility and conductivity and limits their practical applications. Herein, an anti-freezing ionic conductive hydrogel is developed by introducing Na+ into the gellan gum/hydrophobically associated polyacrylamide double network. The optimized anti-freezing hydrogel AICH3 achieves outstanding mechanical properties (fracture stress 1.1 MPa a

Vessel noise exposures of harbour seals from the Wadden Sea.

The North Sea faces intense ship traffic owing to increasing human activities at sea. As harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) are abundant top predators in the North Sea, it is hypothesised that they experience repeated, high-amplitude vessel exposures. Here, we test this hypothesis by quantifying vessel noise exposures from deployments of long-term sound and movement tags (DTAGs) on nine harbour seals from the Wadden Sea. An automated tool was developed to detect intervals of elevated noise in the sound recordings. An assessment by multiple raters was performed to classify the source as either vess

Does Cup-Grip Type Affect Tremor among People with Essential Tremor?

Essential tremor (ET) is a movement disorder that may cause functional disability in daily activities, such as drinking from a cup or drawing. This study aims to characterize effects of varied cup-grip types and measured axes on the actual performance of people with ET and find correlations between cup-grip type and measured axes, and spiral drawing measures. Participants (20 with ET and 18 controls) held a cup of water in a steady position in three grip types and drew a spiral. The cup acceleration was measured by the cup triaxial accelerometer, analyzed in X, Y and Z axes (directions); devia

Colic Prevention to Avoid Colic Surgery: A Surgeon's Perspective.

Management factors associated with colic, particularly related to stall confinement and nutrition, have been linked to alterations in gastrointestinal mucosal transport, motility, and microbiome, which in turn creates conditions that induce colic. In particular, meal feeding creates large changes in water movement in and out of the colon and alters the microbiome. These conditions may in turn result in colic conditions such as large colon impaction or large colon volvulus. In addition, a range of management and nutritional factors have been found to place horses at risk of select colic conditi

How does the brain remove its waste metabolites from within?

The brain is the command center of the body that regulates the vital functions of circulation, respiration, motor function, metabolic activities, or autonomic nervous system outcomes. The brain coordinates these continuous activities at the expense of huge energy utilization. This energy demand is achieved by active transport of nutrients across the endothelial blood-brain barrier (BBB). This review discusses the barrier interfaces in the CNS that include the BBB, blood-spinal cord barrier, the epithelial choroid plexus, and the epithelial arachnoid. While transporting of nutrients across the

Immunolocalization of Aquaporins 1 and 9 in the Ram Efferent Ducts and Epididymis.

Aquaporins (AQPs) are essential membrane protein channels for the transport of water across membranes. Fluid movement in the epididymis is important for modulation of the luminal environment, in which sperm mature and reside. This study was designed to understand the morphology and localization of AQPs in ram efferent ducts (ED) and epididymis. For this purpose, the epididymis of seven animals were removed for histologic and immunohistochemical analyses. AQP1 immunoreactivity was observed in the apex of the ED, and AQP9 was found adjacent to the nuclei of the epithelial cells of the ED. The ep

Established and potential physiological roles of bicarbonate-sensing soluble adenylyl cyclase (sAC) in aquatic animals.

Soluble adenylyl cyclase (sAC) is a recently recognized source of the signaling molecule cyclic AMP (cAMP) that is genetically and biochemically distinct from the classic G-protein-regulated transmembrane adenylyl cyclases (tmACs). Mammalian sAC is distributed throughout the cytoplasm and it may be present in the nucleus and inside mitochondria. sAC activity is directly stimulated by HCO3(-), and sAC has been confirmed to be a HCO3(-) sensor in a variety of mammalian cell types. In addition, sAC can functionally associate with carbonic anhydrases to act as a de facto sensor of pH and CO2. The

Post-learning REM sleep deprivation impairs long-term memory: reversal by acute nicotine treatment.

Rapid eye movement sleep deprivation (REM-SD) is associated with spatial learning and memory impairment. During REM-SD, an increase in nicotine consumption among habitual smokers and initiation of tobacco use by non-smokers have been reported. We have shown recently that nicotine treatment prevented learning and memory impairments associated with REM-SD. We now report the interactive effects of post-learning REM-SD and/or nicotine. The animals were first trained on the radial arm water maze (RAWM) task, then they were REM-sleep deprived using the modified multiple platform paradigm for 24h. Du

Review of behaviour of oil in freezing environments.

The current knowledge of the physical fate and behaviour of crude oil and petroleum products spilled in Arctic situations is reviewed. The fate and final deposition of oil in marine conditions is presented as based on the extant literature. Spreading models were evaluated for oil on ice, under ice, in snow, in brash ice, and between blocks of ice. Models of oil transport under sheet and broken ice were considered, both for sea and river conditions. The ability of ice sheets to trap oil is discussed in relation to oil storage capacity. The effects of oil on a growing ice sheet were examined, bo

[The democratic movement, cholera epidemic and public health reform in the Zurich canton (1867)].

In the summer of 1867 Zurich, Switzerland, was struck by a severe Cholera outbreak. Recent research suggests that the Cholera epidemic had such an influence on the municipal policy makers that they pushed through a major reform of the public health system, namely of water supply and sewerage. This paper adopts a theoretical conception of crisis and social change to evaluate the plausibility of this hypothesis. The basic idea is that structural change can be usually understood as the consequence of a major social crisis. Exactly this was the case in Zurich during the 1860s. After a decade of ec

Early oral feeding after cesarean delivery.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the gastrointestinal function and patient acceptability of early initiation of oral feeding after cesarean delivery. METHODS: Two hundred twenty-one healthy women delivered by cesarean were assigned in an alternating manner to receive either a high-protein, low-residue pudding initiated within 6 hours of delivery and given every 6 hours thereafter (n = 108), or a standard postoperative diet, consisting of sips of water 12 hours after surgery and a liquid diet permitted only after bowel sounds returned and flatus passed (n = 113). RESULTS: Compared with the control group,

Hydrostatic and osmotic pressure gradients produce manifestations of fetofetal transfusion syndrome in a computerized model of monochorial twin pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: In spite of recent advances in the assessment and treatment of fetofetal transfusion syndrome, its underlying mechanism remains controversial. We aimed to determine whether the clinical features of fetofetal transfusion syndrome could be explained by unidirectional or bidirectional intertwin transfusion along placental vascular anastomoses. STUDY DESIGN: We constructed a dynamic computerized model of monochorial twin fetoplacental units on the basis of numerous interrelated hemodynamic, osmotic, and metabolic physiologic variables. The circulations were then linked by various combi

Procaine-induced increases in limbic rCBF correlate positively with increases in occipital and temporal EEG fast activity.

Previous independent EEG and PET studies suggest that administration of intravenous procaine hydrochloride selectively activates limbic brain structures. To further elucidate procaine's effects and explore the relationship between quantitative EEG (qEEG) and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), we simultaneously recorded qEEG and sampled rCBF using O-15 water PET in 20 healthy volunteers during single-blind injections of saline (baseline condition) followed by intravenous procaine (1.84 mg/kg). After thorough screening of EEG records, a subgroup of 7 subjects with EEG data relatively free of b

Morphogenesis of the gubernaculum testis in Sprague-Dawley rat. Preliminary report.

The morphology of testicular descent in the Sprague-Dawley rat from day 14 of gestation to newborn was studied; the purpose was to analyse the anatomy and related observations made with light and scanning microscopy. Adult female rats were mated during estrus. The presence of spermatozoa in vaginal smears was taken to indicate day 0 of gestation. Animals were kept in a controlled 12-hour light-darkness cycle; food and water were provided ad libitum. At day 14 genital ducts are similar in both sexes. At day 15 and 16 the gubernaculum testis is seen as a mesenchymal cord that extends from mesone

Regulation of single sodium channels in renal tissue: a role in sodium homeostasis.

The kidney is responsible for the maintenance of an organism's body solute and water balance (i.e., Na+ homeostasis). The distal nephron and the cortical collecting duct (CCD) (an example of a tight epithelium) are important sites of regulatory control over the rate of Na+ reabsorption. The Na+ channel, a specialized protein located in the apical membrane of CCD cells, is the specific site of transepithelial Na+ movement. Na+ entry into the cell across the apical membrane occurs by passive diffusion of Na+ down an electrochemical gradient. We have used the patch-voltage clamp method to examine
