BACKGROUND: This systematic review aims to determine the loads of anti-A and anti-B in plasma-containing blood products that can safely be transfused to adults.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed in PubMed, including studies dating back to 1940 until January 1st, 2023. In total 1,869 articles were screened, describing 86 cases of hemolytic transfusion reactions (HTR) due to anti-A and/or anti-B in ABO incompatible products. Publications in English were included that reported the anti-A and/or anti-B IgM and/or IgG titers in the blood products, the volume of

An adult domestic short-haired feline leukemia virus-infected cat was referred for kidney failure and worsening anemia requiring transfusions. ABC blood typing was performed with an immunochromatographic strip assay at different occasions. Gel column systems were used for the major and minor crossmatching tests, and anti-A and anti-B titers were determined. No discrete A or B bands appeared on the immunochromatographic strips at any time point for the recipient cat. The recipient's plasma agglutinated RBCs from tested type A and B cats. The recipient's RBCs appeared compatible with plasma from

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The field of transfusion medicine started out with whole blood transfusion to treat severe anaemia and other deficiencies, and then transitioned to component therapy, largely leaving the practice, and experiences, of whole blood transfusions behind. Currently, the field is circling back and whole blood is gaining ground as an alternative to massive transfusion protocols.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Herein we describe a severely anaemic paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) patient initially suspected of suffering from renal haemorrhage, receiving a standard low-titr

In B(A) phenotype, an autosomal dominant phenotype, there is a weak A expression on group B RBCs. We herein report a case of a probable B(A) phenotype in a first time 20-year old male donor. The cell and serum grouping were done using tube technique and also with blood grouping gel card (Diaclone, ABD cards for donors, BioRad, Switzerland). The antisera used were commercial monoclonal IgM type. To check for the weak subgroup of A, cold adsorption and heat elution was performed. The cell grouping was AweakB RhD positive while the serum grouping was B. There was no agglutination with O cells and

BACKGROUND: Accurate ABO determination is critical for safe deceased donor organ allocation. Weak or variant ABO subgroups may not be reliably detected by routine serologic testing, especially under urgent conditions or following transfusion. Such limitations can result in discrepant ABO assignments with potential implications for transplant safety.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We describe a deceased organ donor with discordant ABO typing results reported by two laboratories. Serologic testing was performed using gel agglutination methods on independently collected specimens. Due to persistent d

ABO incompatibility is not considered a contraindication for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Approximately 30% of transplants from related donors and up to 50% of transplants from unrelated donors are ABO incompatible. Immuno-hematologic investigations allow to estimate donor/recipient ABO mismatch and anti-A/B isohemagglutinin (IHA) titration in the pre-HSCT phase. Immediate hemolysis or delayed complications (passenger lymphocyte syndrome and pure red cell aplasia) can occur post HSCT. Some preventive measures take into consideration either decision-making algorithms based on

BACKGROUND: Passenger lymphocyte syndrome (PLS) is a rare post solid organ transplantation complication, usually occurring after ABO- or Rh-mismatched transplantation. In general, PLS can lead to severe hemolytic anemia, but it is usually a self-limited disease. Most PLS cases start with a decreased hemoglobin (Hb) level and require donor type RBC transfusion as the only treatment.
CASE REPORT: In our case, the allograft was given by an O-type Rh-D(+) donor and received by an A-type Rh-D(+) recipient. The PLS was developed on the post-operative day (POD) 10 with an increased indirect bilirubi

BACKGROUND: Typically minor ABO incompatible platelet products are transfused without any incident, yet serious hemolytic transfusion reactions occur. To mitigate these events, ABO 'low titer' products are used for minor ABO incompatible transfusions. We sought to understand the role of IgM/IgG and complement activation by anti-A on extravascular hemolysis.
METHODS: Samples evaluated included (i) Group O plasma from a blood donor whose apheresis platelet product resulted in an extravascular transfusion reaction, (ii) Group O plasma from 12 healthy donors with matching titers that activated co

Blood transfusion is the most common procedure completed during a given hospitalization in the United States. Although often life-saving, transfusions are not risk-free. One sequela that occurs in a subset of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion recipients is the development of alloantibodies. It is estimated that only 30% of induced RBC alloantibodies are detected, given alloantibody induction and evanescence patterns, missed opportunities for alloantibody detection, and record fragmentation. Alloantibodies may be clinically significant in future transfusion scenarios, potentially resulting in ac

Mixed-field agglutination (MFA) can be observed in forward typing of samples from A3 individuals with serologic ABO typing methods. The results of column agglutination testing (CAT) and tube agglutination testing using different antibody clones can be discordant. In this report, we reveal our experience using polymerase chain reaction-sequence-based typing (PCR-SBT) of ABO exon 7 to clarify serologic method discordance of A subgroup blood typing in Northern Thai donors. A total of 21 group A blood donors with either MFA or weak agglutination on routine ABO CAT were recalled. CAT was repeated w

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic transfusion reactions (HTRs) can occur from ABO-incompatible platelet (PLT) transfusions. After a series of cases at our institution, a procedure to screen all plateletpheresis donors for high-titer ABO antibodies was implemented.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Plasma samples from plateletpheresis donors were screened using pooled 0.8% A1 and 0.8% B red blood cells (RBCs) in buffered gel. Dilutions of 1 in 150, 1 in 200, and 1 in 250 were sequentially evaluated. A component testing positive for high-titer ABO antibodies was restricted to ABO-identical or group O recipients or

Anti-A and/or anti-B antibodies synthesized by lymphoid tissues contained in ABO-mismatched solid organ grafts have been reported to cause hemolytic anemia, but not suppressed red blood cell production. A case of living-donor lobar lung transplantation is presented in which suppression of erythropoiesis was associated with ABO mismatched organ transplantation.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and meta-analyze alloimmunization among recipients of red blood cells (RBCs) matched for ABO blood type and Rhesus D (ABO+D) antigen compared with those also matched for c, E, and Kell (cEK).
DATA SOURCES: Four online databases (Medline, Scopus, EMBASE, ClinicalTrials.gov ) were searched from March 28, 2023, to April 1, 2024. The search protocol was peer reviewed and published on PROSPERO ( CRD42023411620 ).
METHODS OF STUDY SELECTION: Studies reporting alloimmunization as the primary outcome among recipients of RBCs matched for ABO+D or additional cEK mat
