The current study evaluated the clinical, ruminal, haemato-biochemical, and ultrasonographic findings of abomasal disorders' affected buffaloes grouped as abomasal impaction (n = 18) and abomasal ulcers (n = 15). The abomasal disorders' screening was based on clinical examination and confirmed by ultrasonography. The effects of experimental infection of lambs with third stage Trichostrongylus larvae are described. Preceding diarrhea, disturbances in the motility of the reticulum, abomasum and jejunum were observed by electromyography. Disappearance of the migrating myoelectric complexes occurred about 24 h before diarrhea and was accompanied by a decrease in both the frequency of reticular contractions and of contractions propagated through the antro-duodenal junction. The significance of these findings is discussed and compared with natural infestation in the field.

In many patients, abdominal ultrasonography is an excellent diagnostic and prognostic tool. It aids in deciding whether the animal should undergo surgical or medical treatment or be slaughtered. This is particularly true in cattle with traumatic reticuloperitonitis (in combination with radiography of the reticulum) or with a tentative diagnosis of left or right displacement of the abomasum. Ultrasound also is an excellent aid for identification of ileus of the small and large intestine, liver abscesses, cholestasis, various urinary tract disorders, and the different forms of ascites.

Ewes with surgically prepared obstruction of the duodenum were used as a model in the study of ruminant metabolic alkalosis and paradoxical aciduria. Metabolic alkalosis occurred as a result of irreversible chloride loss, presumably into the abomasum and forestomachs. Analysis of data on serum and urinary electrolye concentrations provided limited support for the explanation of paradoxical aciduria in terms of chloride and potassium deficiencies. The accumulation undetermined anions in the serum indicated that the decreased urinary pH was due to the excretion of titratable acid.

Natural cryptosporidial infection of the gastrointestinal tract was recognised in four young calves by light microscopy and correlated with scanning and transmission electron microscopy in two of the calves. Seven to 10 sites of the small intestine were examined in each calf and cryptosporidia were most numerous in the posterior 50 per cent. None were found in the anterior 20 per cent of the small intestine, the abomasum or the colon, but they were present in the mucosa of the caecum of three calves.
