This paper reports five cases of fatal paraquat poisoning after skin absorption in adult Papua New Guinea men. Three incidents followed occupational accidents, one victim used paraquat concentrate to treat a scabies infestation, and one used it to treat head lice. All had marked blistering and excoriation, and all died from respiratory failure. In developing countries, reporting on poisoning incidents is very limited, and treatment of paraquat poisoning is, for practical purposes, nonexistent. Proximal or distal small-bowel resection was performed on female Wistar rats. Water, glucose, electrolyte, and bile acid absorption from the perfusate was studied in bile-fistula sham-operated rats and in animals 3 months after intestinal resection, using an in-vivo recirculation perfusion system. BACKGROUND: Topical mometasone is frequently used as an intranasal spray, on drug-eluting stents, and compounded by specialty pharmacies as a sinus rinse. A typical sinus rinse contains 1.2 mg of mometasone dissolved in 240 mL of buffered saline and is flushed through the sinonasal cavity. The mometasone irrigation rapidly flows to the contralateral sinonasal cavity or the nasopharynx with a contact time on the order of 5 to 10 seconds.
