Build Your Research Community: Evaluation of an Online Course to Build Strong Mentoring Relationships and Networks.

Build Your Research Community (BYRC) is an asynchronous, free online course that guides research students to build effective relationships with their primary research advisors as well as build mentoring networks that provide holistic support as they navigate their research training experiences and careers. Preliminary evaluation evidence of the effectiveness of BYRC was collected from undergraduate, postbaccalaureate, and graduate students in 22 biomedical research training programs, as well as students who enrolled in the course independently from across the country. Students valued the cours

"The system is obviously bonkers": The APC Trap and the bind of scholarly publishing across four research intensive institutions in the U.S.

This study analyzes the cognitive dissonance displayed by authors at research intensive institutions in the United States (U.S.) regarding the scholarly publishing of Open Access (OA) publications. A qualitative analysis of 154 open-ended responses was conducted. Eight codes were identified, then each response was analyzed for the codes. The codes themselves coalesce around a phenomenon the authors of this study term the article processing charge (APC) Trap, in which privileged and well-resourced researchers in the U.S. experience highly contradictory sentiments about OA publishing. The cognit

The Dark Tetrad and academic dishonesty: a systematic review and narrative synthesis of personality predictors of cheating, plagiarism, and deception in education.

BACKGROUND: The subclinical personality traits of Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy, and everyday sadism (i.e., the Dark Triad/Tetrad) have been linked to a range of antisocial and deceptive behaviours. With increasing concern about integrity in higher education, it is important to understand how these traits relate to academic misconduct with AI-assisted misconduct becoming more commonplace. METHODS: This systematic review and narrative synthesis examined evidence from 23 studies that investigated associations between dark traits and dishonest academic practices, including plagiarism

Exploring social determinants of learning in nursing education: Barriers, opportunities, and strategies using the Chamberlain SDOL Framework.

BACKGROUND: The number of nursing students reporting health challenges and various disabilities, such as physical, mental, and learning disabilities, is increasing. Despite this shift, many nursing programs continue to rely on traditional structures and technical standards that may inadvertently discriminate against these and other diverse students. PURPOSE: This article presents Chamberlain University's Social Determinants of Learning (SDOL) Framework to better understand student performance and outcomes, as well as to explore its educational implications and potential strategies for mitigat

Nursing faculty's experiences with managing academic integrity in prelicensure nursing education: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Academic integrity is foundational to higher education and essential in nursing, where it aligns with professional integrity and ethical practice. Although nursing is known for honesty, research shows nursing students engage in academic misconduct at rates similar to other disciplines. Faculty play a critical role in promoting integrity; however, limited research has explored their experiences managing misconduct. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore how nursing faculty describe their experiences managing academic integrity in prelicensure nursing programs. METHODS:

[Toward Regulatory Acceptance of MPS-Cardiac Safety Assessment as an Example].

Microphysiological system (MPS) are "Cell/tissue culture systems that reproduce in vivo organ functions in vitro by placing organ compartments that mimic the physiological environment of various organs such as the liver, small intestine, and lungs in micro-spaces." The MPS are attracting attention around the world as tools to improve human predictability in drug discovery research. In the U.S., in 2012, the NIH (National Institutes of Health) allocated a large budget to academia for research development of MPS. In Japan, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology and …

Solutions to obesity: perspectives from the food industry.

Obesity has become an epidemic and an important public health concern. Because the problem is multidimensional, the solution will require an interdisciplinary approach involving the cooperation of the food industry with other stakeholders, such as the government, academia, and health care providers. The consumer is an important player in the solution to obesity because the consumer can make healthy lifestyle choices at the individual level. The food industry is committed to providing the consumer with healthy food options and reliable nutrition information.

Professional Identity Formation in the Transition From Undergraduate to Postgraduate Medical Education: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: The transition from undergraduate to postgraduate medical education is a crucial phase of professional development, requiring trainees to assume greater clinical responsibility and adapt to new social norms. This transition influences professional identity formation (PIF), which is important for safe practice, well-being and resilience. We conducted a scoping review to map studies of PIF during this transition and synthesise the key findings of this body of literature. METHODS: We searched five databases for studies published between January 2000 and December 2023. Eligibility cri

No Environment, No Education: Honoring the Clinical Learning Environment as the Engine of Competency-Based Education - A Call to Action.

Competency-Based Health Professions Education (CBHPE) has transformed health professions training by emphasizing demonstrated competence over time-based progression. Yet the clinical learning environment (CLE), the social, cultural, and organizational ecosystem in which learning occurs, has not evolved in parallel. Persistent hierarchies, workload pressures, and inadequate faculty development limit CBHPE's full potential. Thus, the authors sought to identify priorities for CLE reform. A structured consensus process was conducted at the International Competency-Based Education Collaborators Sum

National-, institutional-, and individual-level determinants of psychiatric research excellence: Analysis of Stanford-Elsevier lists of the top 2 % scholars worldwide (2017-2023).

BACKGROUND: Research excellence is increasingly used as a benchmark for academic evaluation in medical sciences, including psychiatry. However, bibliometric analyses often prioritize productivity over quality. This study examined national, institutional, and individual determinants of psychiatric research excellence using a multi-level ecological framework. METHODS: We analyzed the Stanford-Elsevier Lists of the top 2 % scholars (2017-2023), incorporating 51 independent variables. These included: (a) national determinants grouped into five domains (mental healthcare, gender equity, socioecono

Building community trust through medical education: a four-year descriptive analysis of a national grant program.

Community engagement and trust are vital to medical education and improving health. The experience of national level, extramural seed grant programs to support faculty in both education and health care delivery with the focus of building trust has not been previously reported. The authors reviewed a total of four cohorts of the "Building Trust: Advancing Health Equity" grant recipients supported by the ABIM Foundation and other funding partners. Over $1.5 million was awarded from 2021 to 2024, which represented 92 grants ranging from $2,500-$40,000 each. The geographic regions receiving the mo

Mental fitness in elite sport: The role of therapy in football academies.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing media interest into the effects of organised sport on children and young people's mental health, there remains a dearth of research in this area. The study therefore aimed to explore sport professionals' views of how football academies support the mental health and wellbeing of academy footballers. METHODS: A qualitative design was utilised to generate a rich dataset to gain insights into the views of sport professionals. Eleven individuals who worked at football academies were interviewed for this study. Reflexive thematic analysis was engaged with in order to ide

[Medical training in research: A challenge].

Medical education has as its fundamental axis the development of skills for delivering precision care to patients; however, one of the essential tools for clinical reflection in each case also lies in the development of scientific skills that enable physicians to generate critical thinking and offer new evidence-based alternatives. Nevertheless, significant barriers exist that hinder the research training process from permeating physicians' skill sets. Teaching hospitals must reflect on modifiable barriers to provide physicians in training with an environment that is conducive to and motivatin
