Consistency and quality in written accreditation protocols for pediatrician training programs: a mixed-methods analysis of a global sample, and directions for improvement.

BACKGROUND: The World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) defines accreditation as 'certification of the suitability of medical education programs, and of…competence…in the delivery of medical education.' Accreditation bodies function at national, regional and global levels. In 2015, WFME published quality standards for accreditation of postgraduate medical education (PGME). We compared accreditation of pediatric PGME programs to these standards to understand variability in accreditation and areas for improvement. METHODS: We examined 19 accreditation protocols representing all country in

Has the Volume and Variability of Procedures Reported by Fellows in ACGME-accredited Musculoskeletal Oncology Fellowship Programs Changed Over Time?

BACKGROUND: There has been a considerable rise in the number of musculoskeletal/orthopaedic oncology fellowships and subsequently, orthopaedic oncologists, in the nation. National societies have been concerned that the increasing number of orthopaedic oncologists, coupled with a limited number of patients with bone and soft-tissue sarcomas in the country, may have led to an unintended impact on the training spectrum and/or exposure of orthopaedic oncology fellows-in-training over time. Fellows who are unable to gain exposure by operating on varied cancer presentations during training may be le

Variation in long-term oncologic outcomes by type of cancer center accreditation: An analysis of a SEER-Medicare population with pancreatic cancer.

BACKGROUND: Cancer center accreditation is designed to identify centers that provide high-quality cancer care. This also guides patients and referring physicians towards centers of excellence for specialized care. We sought to examine if cancer center accreditation was associated with improved long-term oncologic outcomes in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma. METHODS: Using the SEER-Medicare database, we identified patients who underwent pancreatectomy for pancreatic adenocarcinoma from 1996 to 2013. Hospitals were categorized into three groups: National Cancer Institute-designated (NCI

Is Office-Based Surgery Safe? Comparing Outcomes of 183,914 Aesthetic Surgical Procedures Across Different Types of Accredited Facilities.

BACKGROUND: There has been a dramatic rise in office-based surgery. However, due to wide variations in regulatory standards, the safety of office-based aesthetic surgery has been questioned. METHODS: A prospective cohort of patients undergoing cosmetic surgery between 2008 and 2013 were identified from the CosmetAssure database (Birmingham, AL). Patients were grouped by type of accredited facility where the surgery was per

How Well Do Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Milestones Track Readiness for Anesthesiology Certifying Examinations in a National Resident Cohort?

BACKGROUND: Milestones evaluation is mandated by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to help training programs measure residents' progress toward competency and identify specific areas for trainee improvement. Data from training programs raised concerns that Milestones ratings may reflect the year of training more than resident progress toward competency. We examined the relationship between residents' Milestones ratings toward the end of residency training and their performance on the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) examinations, widely considered as the go

Public Health Knowledge, Preparedness, and Professional Identity Among Veterinary Students: A Multi-Institutional Survey of AVMA-Accredited Programs.

Veterinarians work at the intersection of animal, human, and environmental health, yet integration of public health and One Health competencies across veterinary curricula remains poorly characterized. An anonymous, cross-sectional online survey of DVM/VMD students enrolled in AVMA COE-accredited or provisionally accredited veterinary schools worldwide evaluated knowledge, perceived training adequacy, confidence, professional identity, and career intentions related to public health and One Health. The 32-item instrument was analyzed using descriptive statistics and inductive thematic analysis.

Family planning influences and perceptions among dermatology residents from ACGME-accredited training programs: a survey-based study.

As an increasing number of women pursue careers in dermatology, the structure and culture of training must reflect the evolving needs of dermatology residents. To examine perceived barriers to and perceptions of family planning amongst dermatology residents capable of becoming pregnant, evidence-based principles were employed to develop a 40-question survey for dermatology residents in ACGME-accredited training programs. A pilot study was conducted with the Harvard Combined Dermatology Residency Training Program residents before full-scale national electronic survey distribution from April to

Health Information Professionals in a Global eHealth World: Ethical and legal arguments for the international certification and accreditation of health information professionals.

BACKGROUND: Issues such as privacy, security, quality, etc. have received considerable attention in discussions of eHealth, mHealth and pHealth. However, comparatively little attention has been paid to the fact that these methods of delivering health care situate Health Information Professionals (HIPs) in an ethical context that is importantly different from that of traditional health care because they assign a fiduciary role to HIPs that they did not have before, their previous technical involvement notwithstanding. Even less attention has been paid to the fact that when these methods of heal
