An Amphibious Adhesive with Excellent Underwater Adhesion Enabled by Hydrophobic Microphase-Separation Reinforcement.

Developing amphibious adhesives that bond strongly under dry, wet, and hydrothermal conditions remains challenging. Inspired by mussels and barnacles, we designed a bionic adhesive by introducing a catechol-grafted chain extender and an amino-terminated fluorinated polyimide chain extender to polyurethane. Catechol groups strengthen interfacial anchoring, while fluorinated polyimide segments induce hydrophobic microphase separation, displace interfacial water, and improve thermal stability. Tuning the fluorinated polyimide molecular weight optimized the phase structure and adhesion. The optima

Application of Photocrosslinkable Wet-Adhesive Composite Hydrogel Adhesive in Bladder Injury Repair.

Medical adhesives have been extensively applied for skin wound repair and hemostasis, while the dynamically humid and complex intraperitoneal environment imposes stringent requirements on tissue adhesives. Few studies have reported the application of biological adhesives for bladder defect repair in urological practice. The GSF composite hydrogel adhesive, composed of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA), silk fibroin methacryloyl (SilMA), and polyether F127 diacrylate (F127DA), was previously fabricated with favorable injectability, appropriate viscosity and superior mechanical toughness. To further

Staphylococcus aureus Adhesion on Hydrophobin Coatings: Adhesion Forces and the Influence of Surface Charge.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is one of the bacterial species capable of forming multilayered biofilms on implants. Such biofilms formed on implanted medical devices often require the removal of the implant in order to avoid sepsis or, in the worst case, even the death of the patient. To address the problem of unwanted S. aureus biofilm formation, its first step, i.e., adhesion, must be understood and prevented. Thus, the development of adhesion-reducing surface coatings for implant materials is of utmost importance. In this work, we used single-cell force spectroscopy to analyze the adhes

A Strong Adhesive Biological Hydrogel for Colon Leakage Repair and Abdominal Adhesion Prevention.

Colon leakage is one of the most severe complications in abdominal trauma or surgery cases. It can lead to severe abdominal infection and abdominal adhesions, resulting in prolonged hospital stays and increased mortality. In this study, a photosensitive hydrogel is proposed, which can swiftly form a strong adhesion coating on the damaged colon after UV irradiation, to realize quick cure and suture-free repair of colon leakage. The newly developed biological gel consists of hyaluronic acid methacryloyl (HAMA) and hyaluronic acid o-nitroso benzaldehyde (HANB) in the optimal ratio of 3: 1, which

Structure of cell-cell adhesion mediated by the Down syndrome cell adhesion molecule.

The Down syndrome cell adhesion molecule (DSCAM) belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily (IgSF) and plays important roles in neural development. It has a large ectodomain, including 10 Ig-like domains and 6 fibronectin III (FnIII) domains. Previous data have shown that DSCAM can mediate cell adhesion by forming homophilic dimers between cells and contributes to self-avoidance of neurites or neuronal tiling, which is important for neural network formation. However, the organization and assembly of DSCAM at cell adhesion interfaces has not been fully understood. Here we combine electron micros

Shear-sensitive adhesion enables size-independent adhesive performance in stick insects.

The ability to climb with adhesive pads conveys significant advantages and is widespread in the animal kingdom. The physics of adhesion predict that attachment is more challenging for large animals, whereas detachment is harder for small animals, due to the difference in surface-to-volume ratios. Here, we use stick insects to show that this problem is solved at both ends of the scale by linking adhesion to the applied shear force. Adhesive forces of individual insect pads, measured with perpendicular pull-offs, increased approximately in proportion to a linear pad dimension across instars. In

[Modeling of Abdominal Wall-Cecum Injury Adhesion and the Anti-adhesion Mechanism of mXG].

OBJECTIVE: To construct the adhesion model of abdominal wall-cecum injury and explore the prevention and treatment effect of modified xyloglucan (mXG) thermosensitive hydrogel on abdominal wall-cecal injury adhesion. METHODS: SD rats were used to construct the abdominal wall-cecal injury adhesion model. Model mice were randomly divided into blank control group (Control), commercial chitosan membrane Control group (Film) and mXG thermosensitive hydrogel group (Hydrogel), each group contained 16 rats.In the Hydrogel group, 1 mL 4% (m/V) mXG solution was smeared on the wound surface of abdominal

[Expression of adhesion-related cytokines in the uterine fluid after transcervical resection of adhesion].

OBJECTIVE: To study the concentration of adhesion-related cytokines, transforming growth factor (TGF) β(1), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) BB, b-fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in intrauterine fluid and their roles in the intrauterine-adhesion reformation. METHODS: From August 2009 to February 2010, 18 patients with moderate or severe intrauterine adhesions underwent transcervical resection of intrauterine adhesion as study group, in the mean time, 20 patients with incomplete septate uterus underwent transcervical resection of septum as control group. The charge of each patient's intra

Choice of hemostatic agent influences adhesion formation in a rat cecal adhesion model.

INTRODUCTION: Hemostatic agents are frequently used during abdominal surgery and some are linked to adhesion formation. We sought to evaluate the impact of several commonly used hemostatic agents on adhesion formation in a rat peritoneal model. METHODS: In our study, Wister outbred rats underwent laparotomy and excision of a portion of their peritoneum to initiate adhesion formation process. One of six different hemostatic agents, namely, activated starch microspheres (Arista AH; Medafor Inc., Minneapolis, MN), glutaraldehyde activated collagen (BioGlue; Cryolife Inc., Kennesaw, GA), thrombin

Glove powder promotes adhesion formation and facilitates tumour cell adhesion and growth.

BACKGROUND: The presence of foreign material in the abdominal cavity irritates the peritoneal surface, leading to an inflammatory response. This defensive mechanism can provoke adhesion formation. The same peritoneal defence cascade is thought to play a role in the process of intra-abdominal tumour recurrence. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether glove powder produced peritoneal adhesions in a rat adhesion model and whether it promoted intra-abdominal tumour recurrence in a rat tumour cell adhesion and growth model. METHODS: A reproducible model that allowed semiquantitative scoring
