Hospitalization of patients with eating disorders on adolescent medical units is threatened by current reimbursement systems.

UNLABELLED: Eating disorders are chronic, life-threatening medical conditions that are the third most common chronic illness in adolescent females in the US. Although successful treatment of eating disorders on medical units has occurred for at least thirty years, some insurance companies refuse payment for such care. OBJECTIVE: To describe outcomes of and reimbursement for treatment of patients with eating disorders (ED) on an adolescent medical unit. STUDY GROUP: 39 participants, mean age 16.1 +/- 1.9 years, with anorexia nervosa (AN) or eating disorder not-otherwise-specified, subtype AN

Hospitalized adolescents' reports of sexual and physical abuse: a comparison of two self-report measures.

This study assesses the consistency of adolescents' reports of sexual and physical abuse via two self-report questionnaires with different measurement approaches and examines demographic and psychopathological characteristics that influence abuse reporting. Seventy adolescent inpatients completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) (Likert-type items are summed to form dimensional scales, and cutoff scores determine abuse status), the Traumatic Events Questionnaire--Adolescents (multiple-choice items determine abuse status) and measures of depression, suicidal ideation, and dissociative s

Individual and family characteristics of middle class adolescents hospitalized for alcohol and other drug abuse.

The frequency of alcohol and drug use, abuse and severity of dependence, and personality and family characteristics in 280 female and male hospitalized adolescents in treatment for chemical dependence and 120 middle class adolescents were examined. A MANOVA showed that parents' drug and alcohol use was a main effect, increasing frequency of use and severity of dependence upon alcohol and drugs in both groups of adolescents. Sexual and physical abuse studied in the patient group also functioned as a main effect. Patients reported significantly less family interests, and participation in intelle

In their own words: case studies of adolescent smartphone language preceding suicide-related hospitalizations.

Rising adolescent suicide rates underscore an urgent need for better detection of short-term risk in the days and hours leading up to attempts. Passive smartphone sensing of language offers a promising approach, yet its performance during vulnerable periods remains unclear. This case study examined five adolescents (3 male, 2 female) who were hospitalized for suicidal crises while enrolled in a smartphone sensing study. Participants contributed outgoing text entries over six months (M = 21,000/person), which were analyzed using natural language processing (NLP) to assess suicide-related conten

Clinical presentation and outcomes of diabetic ketoacidosis in pediatric and adolescent patients at a tertiary hospital in Jordan.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) remains a serious and potentially life-threatening complication of diabetes in children and adolescents, particularly in resource-limited settings, with overall mortality of 3.4%-13.4% in developing countries. Understanding the clinical presentation, treatment outcomes, and complication rates is essential to improving care and reducing morbidity. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on pediatric patients aged 2-16 years admitted with DKA to King Abdulla University Hospital (KAUH) between 2017 and 2023. Data were collected on age, diagnosis

Risk of mortality among adolescents and young adults following hospitalization from an intentional overdose.

OBJECTIVE: Previous self-harm attempts are a known risk factor for subsequent suicide completion in adults but is unestablished among adolescents and young adults. Our objective was to determine the mortality rate for patients 10-24 years of age following discharge from the hospital after a non-lethal, intentional overdose. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted of patients aged 10-24 years seen between 2017 and 2022 by the medical toxicology consultation service (MedTox) at a large tertiary care center who experienced a non-lethal, intentional overdose and survived this encounte

Three-level containment model of hospitalized adolescents with borderline pathology: a holistic therapeutic perspective.

Borderline personality disorders account for 50% of adolescent hospitalization cases in psychiatry. The severity and psychopathological complexity of these symptoms indicate the need for inclusive models of understanding. Adopting a holistic approach allows for the consideration of not only the patient's environment, but also their position within that environment and their life history. In this article, a model based on the concept of therapeutic containment at three levels is presented. Global containment refers to the mindset and organization of the institution that provides care, which is

Eating Disorders and Suicidal Behaviors in Adolescents with Major Depression: Insights from the US Hospitals.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the odds of association between suicidal ideation and/or attempt with comorbid eating disorders in adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study and included 122,020 adolescents with a primary diagnosis of MDD from the nationwide inpatient sample (NIS, 2012-2014). They were sub-grouped by a comorbid diagnosis of eating disorders (N = 1675). We calculated the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) using a logistic regression model with demographic confounders for associations of eating disorders with suicidal ideation and attempt. RE
