Health effects of air pollution.

The general public, especially patients with upper or lower respiratory symptoms, is aware from media reports that adverse respiratory effects can occur from air pollution. It is important for the allergist to have a current knowledge of the potential health effects of air pollution and how they might affect their patients to advise them accordingly. Specifically, the allergist-clinical immunologist should be keenly aware that both gaseous and particulate outdoor pollutants might aggravate or enhance the underlying pathophysiology of both the upper and lower airways. Epidemiologic and laborato…

Predictors of alveolar air leaks.

Persistent air leaks are caused by the failure of the postoperative lung to achieve a configuration that is physiologically amenable to healing. The raw pulmonary surface caused by the dissection of the fissure often is separated from the pleura, and the air leak fails to close. Additionally, higher air flow thorough an alveolar-pleural fistula seems to keep the fistula open. Other factors that interfere with wound healing, such as steroid use, diabetes, or malnutrition, can result in persistence of the leak. A thoracic surgeon can minimize the incidence of air leak through meticulous surgical…

Eye discomfort and air pollution.

Discomfort eye syndrome (DES) comprises a series of 'minor' subjective symptoms in patients where no relevant clinical signs are observed suggesting ocular disease. Our study includes 100 DES patients, excluding video terminal users, selected from the First Aid Service of our Department over two peak periods in both winter and summer time. The Schirmer test I, ferning test, breakup time and conjunctival cytology (scraping and imprint) were performed and data were related to sex, age and air pollution indexes, recorded in the patients' living zones. Our results demonstrate that: (i) the ocular …

Air emboli with Haemaccel(R).

We report two cases of venous air embolism which occurred in association with infusion of Haemaccel(R) using a pressure bag. As a result of these incidents, we performed a study that showed that up to 45 ml of air can be infused into a patient from a pressurised Haemaccel(R) plastic bottle using a standard administration set. We also demonstrated that the volume of air infused was influenced by the type and size of the pressure bag and the warming of the Haemaccel(R) plastic container.

Gaseous air pollution and atopy.

BACKGROUND: Photochemical air pollutants are commonly thought to be implicated in the gradual increase in the prevalence of atopy. However, no epidemiological data are available. METHODS: To clarify this issue, we performed a cross-sectional epidemiological survey in 2604 primary school children, 10 and 11 years old, living in seven communities among which some have the highest photochemical exposure in France. The mean levels of the main gaseous air pollutants (SO2, NO2 and O3) were measured during a 2-month period in 1993. The protocol included a standardized questionnaire, skin prick tests…

The indoor air we breathe.

Increasingly recognized as a potential public health problem since the outbreak of Legionnaire's disease in Philadelphia in 1976, polluted indoor air has been associated with health problems that include asthma, sick building syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Symptoms are often nonspecific and include headache, eye and throat irritation, chest tightness and shortness of breath, and fatigue. Air-borne contaminants include commonly used chemicals, vehicular exhaust, microbial organisms, fibrous glass particles, and dust. Identified causes include defectiv…

Air pollution profile of Bursa.

Rapid urbanization and industrial development are the most important causes of air pollution in Bursa. Smoke and sulfur dioxide concentrations were measured at five stations over a period of 20 months between 1986 and 1987; the concentrations of the total suspended particles were determined in the samples collected at two stations in June and October 1986. Some of the trace elements (Fe, Pb, Cd, Zn) were measured in October 1988 by atomic absorption spectroscopy of 28 samples from two stations. The first-order regression equations were calculated in order to find the relationship between the c…

Psychiatric aspects of air pollution.

Psychological and toxic effects of air pollution can lead to psychiatric symptoms, including anxiety and changes in mood, cognition, and behavior. Increased levels of some air pollutants are accompanied by an increase in psychiatric admissions and emergency calls and, in some studies, by changes in behavior and a reduction in psychological well-being. Numerous toxic pollutants interfere with the development and adult functioning of the nervous system. Manifestations are often insidious or delayed, but they can provide a more sensitive indicator of toxic effects than cancer rates or mortality d…

Air pollution and pollen allergy.

Pollen allergy is the most typical form of allergic diseases. The increase in its frequency during recent years is most evident. The disease … the environment play an important role in the increasing problem of pollen allergy in large cities. Air pollution such as sulphur dioxide, ozone, nitrogen oxides, occupational dust, organic and inorganic suspended particulate matter, tobacco smoke, etc., can cause an increase in airway reactivity through mechanisms dependent on or independent of speci …

Air embolism in spinal surgery.

We present two cases of fatal venous air embolism that occurred in previously healthy adolescents during posterior spine fusion and instrumentation for scoliosis. Previously recorded cases in the literature have been rare and only briefly discussed. Air embolism has been a complication noted in the anesthesia and neurosurgical literature, occurring primarily in total hip patients and those patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures in a sitting position. An examination of the pathophysiology of air embolism in posterior spinal procedures would indicate the use of properly placed central line…

Medical aspects of air travel.

Air travel is convenient but can exacerbate underlying medical conditions. Most problems can be related to changes in atmospheric pressure, hypoxia, air sickness and jet lag. International travelers should be counseled about traveler's diarrhea and malaria if they are flying to endemic areas. Pregnancy is not in itself a contraindication to flying. Common-sense recommendations and reassurance can help assuage concerns about prolonged air travel.

Air embolism during caesarean section.

Air embolism is an uncommon cause of cardiovascular collapse in obstetric surgery. A case is presented in which air was introduced through the open venous sinuses of a partially separated placenta during a delivery by caesarean section. The mechanism of death, methods of monitoring for air embolus, and treatment of embolism are discussed.
