Exploring the indoor airborne microbiome and resistome in layer barns across Alberta, Canada.

The air in poultry barns carries a diverse range of microbial communities including potential opportunistic pathogens, which are important for both animal and human health. Bacteria carrying antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) can become airborne within poultry barns and be transmitted to animals and poultry workers, presenting a serious One Health concern. This study was aimed at characterizing the microbiome and resistome of bioaerosols sampled from layer chicken barns across Alberta. In total, 15 barns (9 cage housed and 6 floor housed) were sampled in this study using a microbial air sam…

Antimicrobial Prophylaxis Practices for Obstetrical Infection Prevention in Alberta: A Multi-Method Study.

OBJECTIVES: Suboptimal antimicrobial prophylaxis in labour and delivery increases the risk of poor health outcomes. We examined Alberta's obstetrical antimicrobial prophylaxis practices to identify gaps and opportunities for clinical improvement. METHODS: We used human-centred design (mapping out patients' journey to delivery) and health care administrative data to establish a baseline of current antimicrobial prophylaxis practices for early-onset neonatal group B Streptococcus (GBS) disease and surgical site infection (SSI) prevention during labour and delivery. RESULTS: Seven obstetrical h…

Donor-derived bartonellosis in solid organ transplant recipients from unhoused donors in Alberta.

Bartonella quintana infection is rarely described to be transmitted through solid organ transplant (SOT). We report a cluster of using donor-derived B quintana infection and the attack rate from Bartonella seropositive donors. In this retrospective study of SOT recipients that received an organ from an unhoused deceased donor (UDD) in Alberta in 2022-2023, serology testing for Bartonella was performed indirect immunofluorescent assay on UDDs and recipients of UDDs with positive serology. Titers ≥1:64 were considered positive. During the study period, 31/32 UDDs were tested for immunoglobulin G…

First evidence of free-living Naegleria species in recreational lakes of Alberta, Canada.

Rising temperatures are increasing environmental habitats for thermotolerant pathogens, such as the so-called 'brain-eating amoeba', Naegleria fowleri. To the best of our knowledge, however, Naegleria species have not been reported in environmental water sources in Canada. We surveyed popular recreational lakes in Alberta, Canada during the summer bathing period to determine the presence or absence of Naegleria species. While N. fowleri was not isolated in this study, we identified other thermotolerant species, including Naegleria pagei, Naegleria gruberi, Naegleria jejuensis and Naegleria ful…

Genetic characterization of measles virus genotype D6 subacute sclerosing panencephalitis case, Alberta, Canada.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a progressive and eventually fatal neurological disease arising from a persistent infection with measles virus (MV) acquired at a young age. SSPE measles virus strains are defective and unable to produce progeny virions, due to multiple and extensive mutations in a number of key genes. We sequenced the full MV genome from our recently reported SSPE case, which typed as genotype D6, and compared it with other genotype D6 wild type and SSPE sequences. The Alberta D6 strain was significantly different from other reported SSPE D6 sequences. Mutations w…

Congenital heart defects and major structural noncardiac anomalies in Alberta, Canada, 1995-2002.

BACKGROUND: Although the majority of congenital heart defects (CHDs) occur in isolation, a significant number occur with noncardiac anomalies. This study determined the proportion of noncardiac anomalies among CHD cases in Alberta. METHODS: Records of infants and children born in Alberta between January 1, 1995, to December 31, 2002, were searched using multiple sources of ascertainment in addition to the Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System (ACASS) (Alberta Health and Wellness, 2012). Each case was assigned to one CHD category and was further categorized into one of the following…

Columbid herpesvirus-1 mortality in great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) from Calgary, Alberta.

Four cases of Columbid herpesvirus-1 infection in great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) were identified in Calgary, Alberta. Necropsy findings included severe multifocal hepatic and splenic necrosis, pharyngeal ulceration and necrosis, and gastrointestinal necrosis. Occasional eosinophilic intranuclear viral inclusion bodies were associated with the foci of necrosis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing confirmed a diagnosis of herpesvirus-induced disease. The sequence of a PCR amplicon had 99.7% homology to Columbid herpesvirus-1.

Characterization of airborne mineral dusts associated with farming activities in rural Alberta, Canada.

The dry and windy climate of the Western Canadian prairie provinces, combined with large scale agricultural activities, results in aerosolization or organic and mineral dusts. The purpose of this study was to conduct an environmental and minerological analysis of these dusts in order to estimate the risk for pneumoconiosis in exposed farmer populations. Two districts in central/southern Alberta were chosen for study. One of these regions was representative of a predominantly grain growing district with minimal use of irrigation; the other region was largely devoted to forage and irrigated crop…

Subsequent Primary Neoplasms and Mortality Among Survivors of Childhood Cancer in Alberta, Canada.

Background: While research shows childhood cancer survivors experience elevated subsequent primary neoplasm (SPN) and premature mortality risks, few studies have included contemporary survivors. Methods: This study quantifies the risk of SPNs and mortality among modern survivors of childhood cancer. Utilizing a retrospective, population-based cohort of individuals diagnosed with cancer before the age of 18 in Alberta, Canada (2001-2018), we evaluated their risks of SPNs and mortality compared to the general population in Alberta, overall and after 5-year survival, using standardized mortality …

Prevalence of Salmonella spp. in environmental samples from table egg barns in Alberta.

Some Salmonella spp. are zoonotic, a frequent cause of foodborne illness in Canada, and known to infect humans through contaminated poultry and poultry products. Certain serotypes of Salmonella spp. have been demonstrated to be vertically transmitted from hen to egg. The incidence of Salmonella spp. isolation in the flock has been correlated to its isolation from the environment. Twenty-one producers were enrolled in this study to examine the occurrence of Salmonella spp. in 48 table egg layer flocks housed in 35 barns in Alberta. The purpose of this study was to: (i) identify Salmonella serot…
