BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) constitutes a major public health problem and is associated with a substantial amount of disability and premature death worldwide. Several treatment and self-help options including Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings are available. Nevertheless, factors associated with AA affiliation in some disadvantaged groups such as justice-involved women are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: Children of alcoholics are at higher risk for physical injuries and malnutrition. In this study nutritional neglect and physical abuse in children of alcoholics has been compared with children of non-alcoholics in a General Hospital attached to a Medical College.

To examine possible influences of premorbid and comorbid factors on the neuropsychological test performance of recently abstinent (3-5 weeks) drug abusers, we studied 24 alcoholics, 23 cocaine abusers, and 22 healthy controls of comparable age and education. This study was undertaken to understand the myopathic manifestations as well as the electrophysiological, pathological, and histochemical changes in muscle tissues of chronic alcoholics. Loneliness questionnaires were distributed to 92 male and 60 female American subjects undergoing treatment in selected alcohol rehabilitation centers. Factors associated with feelings of loneliness for these individuals were investigated. Significant differences were found between the loneliness scores of men and women, between individuals who had different familial histories of alcoholism, and between subjects who indicated various degrees of happiness during the previous year. 12 cases of serious complications of mandibular fractures in 16 vagrant alcohol-dependent patients are described. Psycho-social and metabolic factors contributed to the high frequency of infections, including osteomyelitis. The personality profiles of alcoholics as derived from four objective inventories--the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire, the Personality Research Form and the Differential Personality Inventory--are reviewed. An overall consistency of results is seen which interfaces with known clinical entities from other areas of mental health research.

Alcoholic patients completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) while hospitalized for treatment and again after 4 years of follow-up. Those who remained abstinent and functioned well in the community for the 4-yr period were characterized during treatment by a significant elevation on the Depression (D) scale which decreased to normal ranges at follow-up.
