Assessment of wastewater quality and agricultural reuse risks in Oran, Northwestern Algeria.

Climate change, rapid urbanization, and draughts continue to intensify the issue of water scarcity in the coastal areas of Algeria, making the reuse of treated wastewater a highly relevant alternative for the sustainable management of water resources. On the other hand, inefficient performance can pose a danger to the environment with respect to wastewater reuse. The current study investigates the monthly variation in essential physicochemical values in the treated wastewater discharged from the El Kerma Wastewater Treatment Plant located in Oran, Algeria, with the objective of determining its…

Bartonella bovis and Bartonella chomelii infection in dairy cattle and their ectoparasites in Algeria.

Bartonella are blood-borne and vector-transmitted bacteria, some of which are zoonotic. B. bovis and B. chomelii have been reported in cattle. However, no information has yet been provided on Bartonella infection in cattle in Algeria. Therefore, 313 cattle from 45 dairy farms were surveyed in Kabylia, Algeria, in order to identify Bartonella species infecting cattle using serological and molecular tests. In addition, 277 ticks and 33 Hippoboscidae flies were collected. Bartonella bovis and B. chomelii were identified as the two species infecting cattle. Bartonella DNA was also amplified from 6…

Detection of a novel Rickettsia sp. in soft ticks (Acari: Argasidae) in Algeria.

Argasid ticks are vectors of viral and bacterial agents that can infect humans and animals. In Africa, relapsing fever borreliae are neglected arthropod-borne pathogens that cause mild to deadly septicemia and miscarriage. It would be incredibly beneficial to be able to simultaneous detect and identify other pathogens transmitted by Argasid ticks. From 2012 to 2014, we conducted field surveys in 4 distinct areas of Algeria. We investigated the occurrence of soft ticks in rodent burrows and yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) nests in 10 study sites and collected 154 soft ticks. Molecular id…

Entomological investigation following the resurgence of human visceral leishmaniasis in southern Algeria.

Visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis are the main endemic vector born diseases in Algeria. In the Hoggar region (extreme south of the country) human visceral leishmaniasis (HVL) is known to be sporadic but during the last decade the number of cases has increased significantly. In 2010, a peak of HVL cases was registered mostly among children. Therefore an entomological survey and a retrospective study on HVL cases were carried out in order to explore the transmission of the disease. Among the sand fly caught Phlebotomus bergeroti was the most frequent species (68%) followed by Sergentomyia sch…

[Personnel at risk for occupational blood exposure in a university hospital in West Algeria].

The accidental occupational exposure of health care workers to blood or other body fluids after skin injury or mucous contact, constitutes a risk for the transmission of the hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) or human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV). This paper presents the results of a survey carried out over two years (January 2005 - December 2006) on reported occupational blood exposures (OBE). The study aimed to determine incidence, workers and professional categories at risk, and circumstances of OBE occurrence in order to identify avoidable cases and to orient prevention mea

["Standard precautions" practices among nurses in a university hospital in Western Algeria].

Health care workers are exposed daily to blood borne injury and infection with a high risk of hepatitis B or C and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission. In the 1980s, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed a set of protocols and guidelines known as standard precautions (SP) to prevent accidental transmission of pathogens. The SP should be followed for each intervention or delivery of care in order to protect health care workers from risks associated with contact with blood and other biological liquids. A survey was conducted in a Western Algerian universit…

Prevalence of bovine and human brucellosis in western Algeria: comparison of screening tests.

A serological study was carried out in Tiaret province in western Algeria on 1032 cows distributed in 95 flocks to estimate the prevalence of Brucella infection and to compare the sensitivity and specificity of a range of agglutination tests. Screening tests showed 31.5% of herds positive using the buffered plate antigen test and 26.3% using the rose Bengal test compared with 15.7% with the complement fixation test. Using the complement fixation test as the gold standard for confirmatory tests, the Rivanol test was found to be more sensitive but less specific than tube agglutination in detecti…
