Review article: alginate-raft formulations in the treatment of heartburn and acid reflux.

Alginate-based raft-forming formulations have been marketed word-wide for over 30 years under various brand names, including Gaviscon. They are used for the symptomatic treatment of heartburn and oesophagitis, and appear to act by a unique mechanism which differs from that of traditional antacids. In the presence of gastric acid, alginates precipitate, forming a gel. Alginate-based raft-forming formulations usually contain sodium or potassium bicarbonate; in the presence of gastric acid, the bicarbonate is converted to carbon dioxide which becomes entrapped within the gel precipitate, converti…

Impression method of the colon using sodium alginate--an experimental evaluation in dog.

An experimental study using adult dog was conducted on the impression of the colon whereby a screening test is done by making a mold of the intestine with sodium alginate. The mold of the intestine could be obtained easily and safely in a short time. Protrusions about 2 mm in diameter corresponding to lymphoid tissue of the rectum and sigmoid colon and shallow depressions on the surface of the protrusions were exactly imprinted on the surface of the mild. Compared with the barium study and endoscopy, this method requires neither special equipment nor high-grade technique, can be done easily in

EFFECT OF SODIUM ALGINATE ON STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS DURING MILD HEATING AND FREEZING.

The effects of sodium alginate on Staphyiococcus aureus 196 exposed to mild heating or to freezing at -21 C were studied. The addition of sodium alginate to a diluent appeared to confer some protection of viable cells during mild heating. The effect of the presence of sodium alginate in the suspending media during freezing was less clear. There was a slight trend, not statistically significant, for greater reduction in numbers of viable cells at the low temperature when 4% alginate was present in phosphate buffer. Results indicated that the value of sodium alginate in controlling this food-poi

Advanced alginate engineering strategies toward next-generation precision orthopedics.

The rising clinical demand for treating musculoskeletal defects necessitates viable alternatives to traditional bone grafting. Alginate, a naturally derived polysaccharide, has become a leading bioink for 3D bioprinting owing to its abundance, rapid ionic crosslinking, and scalable manufacturing. Yet, intrinsic drawbacks-poor cell adhesivity, unpredictable degradation kinetics, and overall low bioactivity-continue to impede clinical translation. Advances in chemical modification and mechanical reinforcement have begun to reprogram alginate into dynamic extracellular matrix mimics with enhanced

Research Progress of Wound Dressing Based on Sodium Alginate Composite Hydrogel.

Hydrogel wound dressing has significant advantages in wound treatment. It can shorten the time of wound healing, control the process of wound healing, and effectively promote the healing of damaged tissues in a hydrated environment. Sodium alginate (SA) is a commonly used hydrogel wound dressing material, which can quickly form a three-dimensional network structure hydrogel in a relatively mild environment, but the mechanical properties and stability of a single SA hydrogel are poor. The composite hydrogel prepared by mixing SA with other substances can not only exert the performance of a sing

Synergic effect of sodium alginate in the microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation.

Microbially Induced Calcium Carbonate Precipitation (MICP) has emerged as an innovative and environmentally sustainable technique for construction material stabilization. However, its practical application is hindered by limitations such as non-uniform carbonate precipitation and low reaction efficiency. This study investigates the synergistic role of sodium alginate (SA), a natural polysaccharide, in enhancing MICP precipitation efficiency. Systematic experiments assessed how adding 1 wt% SA affected CaCO₃ precipitation across three cementation media (CM) designs (urea:Ca2+ ratios of 1:1, 1:2

The Trade-Off Between Sterility and Structural Integrity in Sterilized Alginate Hydrogels.

Sterilization is essential for hydrogel-based biomaterials, but it can also determine the final material state. This study used ionically crosslinked alginate hydrogels as a model system to evaluate sterilization as a coupled process linking microbial inactivation and hydrogel structural reorganization. Steam sterilization, gamma irradiation, ethylene oxide (EtO), ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, and high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) treatment were assessed within the same model system. Microbiological effectiveness was assessed using surface- and matrix-associated contamination models, while struc

Development and characterization of a third-generation S-protected alginate-cystine thiomer.

Thiomers show an improved mucoadhesion by forming disulfide bonds with mucin; however, conventional 1st-generation thiomers containing free thiol groups suffer from oxidative instability and limited shelf life. To overcome these drawbacks, this study reports the synthesis and characterization of a 3rd-generation S-protected thiomer based on alginate modified with cystine, a biogenic disulfide ligand that provides stability while retaining thiol-disulfide exchange capacity. The alginate-cystine conjugate was synthesized via carbodiimide. FT-IR and 13C NMR confirmed the formation of disulfide li

Multifunctional Alginate Composite Fibers Based on Pre-Crosslinked Spinning Solutions.

Because the environmental pollution arising from microplastics and carbon emissions continues to intensify, biodegradable alginate fibers have become green candidates to relieve the environmental crisis. However, the facile fabrication of alginate fibers with excellent mechanical strength and specific functionalities remains challenging. This study incorporates titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles into pre-crosslinked sodium alginate (SA) spinning solutions to fabricate multifunctional alginate composite fibers by a one-step wet-spinning strategy. Due to the pre-crosslinking of calcium ions (

Optimizing the rheological and structural synergism of alginate and welan gum as blended biocomposites.

BACKGROUND: Welan gum (WL) is costly and chemically inert, limiting its applications. Blending with sodium alginate (SA) overcomes this by synergistic interactions that enhance viscosity and rheological properties, forming a promising composite hydrocolloid gel. RESULTS: The viscoelastic properties for nonlinear behavior under large deformation and the effect of environmental factors on the zero-shear viscosity of the SA-WL mixtures have been investigated. The physical properties of the SA-WL mixtures at different concentrations and ratios were studied systematically by analyzing the effects

Rapid Extrusion of Myotube-Scale Alginate Fibers for Structured Cultivated Meat.

Cultivated meat (CM) scaffolds must be edible and produced with high throughput. This study introduces a novel approach for structured CM production using alginate-based scaffolds prepared using a liquid-liquid extrusion method called Pressurized Apparatus for Striated Tissue Assembly (PASTA). We hypothesized that PASTA scaffolds could enable the creation of tissue constructs exceeding 500 µm thickness with food-scale throughput. Leveraging sub-boiling hydrothermal degradation, we modulated the biophysical properties of alginate, resulting in controlled reductions in viscosity, zeta potential,

Plasma-treated alginate hydrogels modulate porcine leukocyte activity in vitro.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates, for the first time, the effects of plasma-treated alginate hydrogels (PTH) on porcine leukocyte activity in vitro. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) generates reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS), which can modulate immune cell behavior and may promote tissue repair. RESULTS: Our findings demonstrate that PTH induce a controlled increase in nitrite and superoxide production in both neutrophil and monocyte cultures, particularly at higher treatment levels, without evidence of lytic cell death or significant loss of viability. PTH application resulted i

Deposition of alginate-oregano nanofibres on cotton gauze for potential antimicrobial applications.

In this study, we developed an innovative natural antibacterial medical bandage composed of electrospun nanofibres derived from alginate (SAg) and oregano essential oil (OEO). The nanofibre deposition process was systematically optimised, achieving a controlled evolution of fibre formation at intervals of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8 h. Over time, fibre morphology has changed from a dispersed network to a densely packed, homogeneous, fibrous, fully embedding cotton gauze nanofibre. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed nanofibres with diameters ranging from 100 to 300 nm, 46 % measuring 100-200 nm,

Size-Controlled Fabrication of Alginate Hydrogel Microbeads Optimized for Lipase Entrapment.

Enzyme entrapment in alginate hydrogel microbeads is an effective method of immobilization for industrial applications, but many fabrication methods for alginate microbeads involve oil, organic solvents, or high temperatures that reduce enzymatic activity. In this study, we employed an oil- and solvent-free gas-shearing technique to prepare alginate microbeads for the entrapment of Candida rugosa lipase (CRL), thereby minimizing thermal- and solvent-induced inactivation. To enhance immobilization efficiency and reusability, the effects of gas flow rate, alginate concentration, and cross-linkin

Optimization of mouse oocyte vitrification through microencapsulation in sodium alginate hydrogel.

PURPOSE: Vitrification (ice-free) is considered more effective than slow freezing for oocyte cryopreservation. However, high concentrations of toxic cryoprotective agents (CPAs) are typically required, followed by multi-step washing to remove CPAs, risking osmotic shock and impairing oocytes development. This study aimed to establish a hydrogel encapsulation strategy using a microfluidic system to improve vitrification outcomes. METHODS: Three different sizes of oocyte-loaded sodium alginate hydrogel microspheres (OHMs) (~ 262 µm, ~ 193 µm, and ~ 156 µm) were prepared using an optimized three

Comparison of Flocculation Methods for Sodium Alginate and Characterization of Its Structure and Properties.

This study investigated how different extraction parts of raw materials and different flocculation methods affect the extraction yield, structure, and properties of sodium alginate. The aim was to improve the quality of sodium alginate and provide theoretical guidance for upstream enterprises. In this study, Lessonia nigrescens (LN) was used as a raw material. The alkali treatment conditions were optimized. The optimal extraction conditions were determined to be a 2% sodium carbonate concentration, a duration of 4 h, a material-to-liquid ratio of 1:40, and a temperature of 60 °C, achieving an
