Quantifying Lateral Frontal Sinus Access: The Upper Blepharoplasty Approach.

OBJECTIVE: Despite advances in technology and instrumentation, access to the lateral frontal sinus remains a challenge for surgeons. We sought to quantify the reach and applicability of the upper blepharoplasty approach (UBA) to the frontal sinus. METHODS: Twelve cadaveric specimens were obtained for anatomic research and frontal sinuses divided into 3 zones. Zone 1 was defined as medial to the supraorbital neurovascular bundle (SON). The remaining orbit was then bisected to define zone 2 (centrally) and zone 3 (laterally). Twenty-four UBAs were performed followed by 12 modified endoscopic Lo

Hypertension and counter-hypertension mechanisms in giraffes.

The giraffe is unique as its head is 2500-3000 millimeters above its heart, thus the giraffe's heart must pump hard enough to overcome the huge hydrostatic pressure generated by the tall column of blood in its neck in order to provide its head with sufficient nutrients and oxygen. Giraffes therefore have exceptionally high blood pressure (hypertension) by human standards. Interestingly, the "unnaturally" high blood pressure in giraffes does not culminate in severe vascular lesions, nor does it lead to heart and kidney failure, whereas in humans, the same blood pressure is exceedingly dangerous

Anatomy of Shoulder Girdle Muscle Modifications and Walking Adaptation in the Scaly Chinese Pangolin (Manis Pentadactyla Pentadactyla: Pholidota) Compared with the Partially Osteoderm-Clad Armadillos (Dasypodidae).

Because pangolins are unique mammals with a body and limbs almost entirely sheathed in hard keratinous overlapping scales and with digging and climbing abilities, the shoulder girdle muscles may differ significantly from those of other mammals including the partially osteoderm-clad armadillos. Therefore, we conducted a functional anatomical study of the shoulder girdle muscles in Chinese pangolins (Manis pentadactyla pentadactyla, Pholidota) and some armadillo species (Dasypodidae). Our CT scans revealed that the pangolin's overlapping scales are hard structures completely encasing the limbs.

Comparative morphology of snake (Squamata) endocasts: evidence of phylogenetic and ecological signals.

Brain endocasts obtained from computed tomography (CT) are now widely used in the field of comparative neuroanatomy. They provide an overview of the morphology of the brain and associated tissues located in the cranial cavity. Through anatomical comparisons between species, insights on the senses, the behavior, and the lifestyle can be gained. Although there are many studies dealing with mammal and bird endocasts, those performed on the brain endocasts of squamates are comparatively rare, thus limiting our understanding of their morphological variability and interpretations. Here, we provide t

An anatomical analysis of the relationships between the intercostal nerves and the thoracic and abdominal muscles in man. I. Ramification of the intercostal nerves.

Minute dissection was performed on the ventral primary rami of the first thoracic to first lumbar nerves in two halves of an adult male cadaver in order to determine points of origins of muscular branches from the intercostal nerves. Generally, the muscular branches originated independently, but the branches supplying the intercostalis intimus and internus tended to originate as a common trunk. The muscular branching patterns were compiled in an illustration, and based on these patterns the serial homology of the thoracic and abdominal muscles was proposed. Although the obliquus externus abdom

Zygomaticofacial, Zygomaticoorbital, and Zygomaticotemporal Foramina.

This study aimed to assess the anatomical and morphometric characteristics of the main zygomaticofacial (ZFF), zygomaticoorbital (ZOF), and zygomaticotemporal (ZTF) foramina in Brazilian dry skulls. 61, 69, and 42 skulls for ZFF, ZOF, and ZTF were evaluated by a single calibrated examiner for format, transverse and vertical diameters, and distances from the foramina to anatomical landmarks. Paired t test, Wilcoxon test, Pearson and Spearman correlations were used. Circular outline was the predominant format for ZFF and ZTF, while oval format was the most frequent for ZOF. Median distances from

Interplay between postcranial morphology and locomotor types in Neotropical sigmodontine rodents.

Sigmodontine rats are one of the most diverse components of the Neotropical mammal fauna. They exhibit a wide ecological diversity and a variety of locomotor types that allow them to occupy different environments. To explore the relationship between morphology and locomotor types, we analyzed traits of the postcranial osteology (axial and appendicular skeletons) of 329 specimens belonging to 51 species and 29 genera of sigmodontines exhibiting different locomotor types. In this work, postcranial skeletal characters of these rats are considered in an ecomorphological study for the first time. S

An anatomical comparison of the human and bovine thoracolumbar spine.

The bovine spine has been frequently selected as the model for in vitro mechanical studies. A comparative anatomical study has been presented describing important differences and similarities between selected areas in the adult human and calf thoracolumbar spinal segment. Differences in column length and curvature were observed. The total length of the adult bovine vertebral column was found to be on average 209 cm longer than the adult human spine. Equivalent thoracolumbar lengths were obtained by selecting 6-8 week-old dairy calves, which because of their young age had the benefit of consist

A Review of the Comparative Anatomy, Histology, Physiology and Pathology of the Nasal Cavity of Rats, Mice, Dogs and Non-human Primates. Relevance to Inhalation Toxicology and Human Health Risk Assessment.

There are many significant differences in the structural and functional anatomy of the nasal cavity of man and laboratory animals. Some of the differences may be responsible for the species-specific nasal lesions that are often observed in response to inhaled toxicants. This paper reviews the comparative anatomy, physiology and pathology of the nasal cavity of the rat, mouse, dog, monkey and man, highlighting factors that may influence the distribution of nasal lesions. Gross anatomical variations such as turbinate structure, folds or grooves on nasal walls, or presence or absence of accessory

The parameters of the porcine eyeball.

BACKGROUND: The eye of the domestic pig (Sus scrofa domestica) is an ex vivo animal model often used in vision sciences research (retina studies, glaucoma, cataracts, etc.). However, only a few papers have compiled pig eye anatomical descriptions. The purpose of this paper is to describe pig and human eye anatomical parameters to help investigators in their choice of animal model depending on their study objective. METHODS: A wide search of current medical literature was performed (English language) using PubMed. Anteroposterior axial length and corneal radius, astigmatism, vertical and horiz

Tongue evolution in lungless salamanders, family plethodontidae. III. Patterns of peripheral innervation.

Innervation of the tongue and associated musculature in plethodontid salamanders was studied using Palmgren stained sectioned materials, fresh dissection, and whole mounts of experimental specimens treated with horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Species studied were chosen to represent modes of tongue projection recognized by Lombard and Wake ('77). Special attention was given to species of the genera Plethodon, Batrachoseps, Pseudoeurycea, and Hydromantes, but representatives of other genera were investigated. As expected we found that cranial nerves IX and X and spinal nerve 1 supplied the muscle

Comparative development of the crocodylian interclavicle and avian furcula, with comments on the homology of dermal elements in the pectoral apparatus.

The pectoral apparatus (shoulder girdle plus sternum) of amniotes plesiomorphically includes an unpaired element of dermal origin. In crocodylians, lepidosaurs, and nontherian synapsids (monotremes and their ancestors) this element is identified as the interclavicle, in Testudines (turtles and tortoises) as the entoplastron, and in Aves as the furcula. We investigated embryonic development of the interclavicle in Alligator mississippiensis (American alligator) and of the furcula in Gallus gallus (domestic chicken). The interclavicle and furcula are among the first skeletal elements to ossify,

Occipito-vertebral fusion in ocean sunfishes (Teleostei: Tetraodontiformes: Molidae) and its phylogenetic implications.

We describe the ontogeny of the occipital skull and anterior vertebrae of the molids Ranzania laevis and Masturus lanceolatus and compare it with that of the ostraciid Lactophrys sp. The first vertebra fuses to the basioccipital in early ontogeny in the two molids and previous authors thus confused that vertebra with the back of the basioccipital, so that all previous counts of their vertebral numbers are incorrect by one vertebra. As evidenced by Lactophrys sp., ostraciids are the only other tetraodontiforms with similar occipito-vertebral fusion. In contrast to the molids, additional anterio

Delta frame triplanar external fixation for displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures: mid- to long-term outcomes and comparative literature review : *A single-stage external fixation-based approach for restoring calcaneal anatomy.

PURPOSE: Displaced intra-articular calcaneal fracture treatment may involve surgical intervention to restore the anatomy of the calcaneus and promote proper healing. Numerous surgical techniques, such as open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) or percutaneous fixation, have been utilized with varying degrees of success in achieving anatomical reduction and functional outcomes. However, complication rates are still high, and there is ongoing debate regarding the optimal surgical approach. This study presents a delta-frame triplanar external fixation technique combining intra- and extra-calcanea
