The manuscript reports accidental water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) poisoning by monensin, a food supplement commonly used to feed cattle, and indicate some relevant aspects related to buffalo breeding. Most of the buffalo intoxication reports are accidental and occur in areas where buffalo breeding is not a traditional activity or in new buffalo breed without expert assistance. The present communication reports accidental buffalo poisoning due to monensin consumption at one corral that usually breed bovine to slaughter, a situation not reported before in Brazil. Monensin poisoning hypothesis wa

CASE HISTORY: Two crossbred, castrated male goats, a 5-month-old and an 8-month-old, were observed ingesting Vestia foetida (Solanaceae). Later, the goats were seen standing splay-legged and apparently disoriented.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: When examined, both goats were in sternal recumbency and had mydriasis; the younger goat had a diminished menace response. When the goats were made to stand, they were ataxic and had muscle fasciculations of the hindquarters and face. Both had halitosis consistent with the odour of crushed Vestia leaves. The animals were treated with a mixture of vitamins and int

Administration to rats of the calmodulin (CaM) inhibitors Thioridazine (TDZ) or Imipramine (IMP) (50 mg/kg ip) or Chlorpromazine (CPZ) at a dose of 25 mg/kg, ip 6 hr after olive oil or CCl4 (1 ml/kg, ip as a 20% olive oil solution) significantly increased the GSH content in liver of CCl4 poisoned animals but not in controls. The analysis of present observations and past results with Trifluoperazine, suggest that increases in GSH content in CCl4 poisoned animals treated with protective anticalmodulins are a consequence of prevention and not the cause of their preventive effects.

Cassia occidentalis is a bush from the Leguminosae family, subfamily Caesalpinoideae, and is a toxic plant of veterinary interest due to the occasional contamination of animal rations. This report describes the clinical and histopathological findings of an outbreak of C. occidentalis poisoning in horses. Twenty mares were poisoned after consuming ground corn contaminated with 8% of C. occidentalis seeds. Of the 20 animals affected, 12 died: 8 mares were found dead, 2 died 6 h after the onset of clinical signs compatible with hepatic encephalopathy and the 2 other animals were subjected to euth

Substances toxic to the kidney are legion in the modern world. The sheer number and variety, their mutual interactions and, metabolism within the body are a challenge to research. Moreover, the kidney is especially prone to injury owing to its physiology. Acute kidney injury (AKI) induced by poisonous or primarily nephrotoxic substances, may be community acquired with ingestion or inhalation or nosocomial. Many nephrotoxic plants, animal poisons, medications, chemicals and illicit drugs can induce AKI by varying pathophysiological pathways. Moreover, the epidemiology of toxic AKI varies depend

Animal drugs have been used in the treatment of uro-andrological diseases since ancient times. At present, the clinical use of animal drugs is mostly based on the experience of doctors. From the perspective of the diversified theories of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), this paper summarizes the experience of predecessors in the use of animal drugs, and believes that under the guidance of the TCM theories, the application of animal drugs in the treatment of uro-andrological diseases has achieved multi-dimensional and diversified development, as in the treatment of chronic prostatitis based

Organophosphoate (OP) chemicals are known to inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Studying OP poisoning is difficult because common small animal research models have serum carboxylesterase, which contributes to animals' resistance to OP poisoning. Historically, guinea pigs have been used for this research; however, a novel genetically modified mouse strain (KIKO) was developed with nonfunctional serum carboxylase (Es1 KO) and an altered acetylcholinesterase (AChE) gene, which expresses the amino acid sequence of the human form of the same protein (AChE KI). KIKO mice were injected w

INTRODUCTION: On theoretical grounds, hydroxocobalamin is an attractive antidote for cyanide poisoning as cobalt compounds have the ability to bind and detoxify cyanide. This paper reviews the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic aspects of hydroxocobalamin, its efficacy in human cyanide poisoning and its adverse effects.
METHODS: PubMed was searched for the period 1952 to April 2012. A total of 71 papers were identified in this way; and none was excluded. PHARMACOKINETICS AND PHARMACODYNAMICS: Pharmacokinetic studies in dogs and humans suggest a two-compartment model, with first order elimina

We studied the dynamics of respiratory function in rats during intratracheal poisoning with diisopropyl fluorophosphate and pentylenetetrazole in doses corresponding to the LD50 in humans. The maximum of external respiration impairment was recorded in 30 min after poisoning. Administration of diazepam and atropine both separately and in combination during the development of the first signs of poisoning did not significantly affect the respiration parameters, but reduced the incidence of seizures and contributed to a decrease in the rate of animal death. Intratracheal administration of cholinol

This study investigated whether marine toxin poisonings reported to U.S. Poison Centers changed during the height of the pandemic period (April 2020 to December 2021). The National Poison Data System was queried for single-substance human exposure calls between 1 January 2000 and 31 March 2022 pertaining to ichthyosarcotoxins. Incidence rate ratios for exposure calls were calculated using mixed-effects negative binomial regression. Call counts were aggregated by year and regressed on a binary indicator for occurrence during pandemic restrictions. During the peak pandemic period, exposure calls

Red Kites (Milvus milvus) are avian scavengers limited to Europe, and they currently are listed as an endangered species worldwide. Accidental poisoning is often listed as one of the threats to Red Kites throughout their range of distribution. The purpose of this article is to investigate the suspected poisoning cases reported to the French Wildlife Disease Surveillance System. Dead animals are submitted to a local veterinary laboratory for necropsy and when poisoning is suspected, samples are submitted to the Toxicology Laboratory of the College of Veterinary Medicine, Lyon, France. Poisoning is a sparsely studied but major health problem in Vietnam. In this hospital-based retrospective study, the medical records of all cases of poisoning admitted to the Poison Control Center in Hanoi from 1999 to 2003 were carefully reviewed. A total of 1,836 poisoning emergencies were recorded. The female:male ratio was approximately 1:1. The largest number of poisoned patients was found in the age-group 15-24 years. A vast majority of the toxic exposures (74.1%) occurred at the patients' homes. Suicidal poisoning constituted about one third of all cases. The most commonly involved toxi

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs), the most poisonous substances known in nature, pose significant concern to health authorities. The only approved therapeutic for botulism is antitoxin. While administered to patients only after symptom onset, antitoxin efficacy is evaluated in animals mostly in relation to time postintoxication regardless of symptoms. This is most likely due to the difficulty in measuring early symptoms of botulism in animals. In this study, a rabbit spirometry model was developed to quantify early respiratory symptoms of type E botulism that were further used as a trigger for tr

Dinoflagellates are not only important marine primary producers and grazers, but also the major causative agents of harmful algal blooms. It has been reported that many dinoflagellate species can produce various natural toxins. These toxins can be extremely toxic and many of them are effective at far lower dosages than conventional chemical agents. Consumption of seafood contaminated by algal toxins results in various seafood poisoning syndromes: paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP), amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP), diarrheic shellfish poisoning (DSP), ci

The veterinary manuals by Vegetius, Pelagonius and Chiron Kentauros, all three dating from the 4th century, contain remarks about livestock being poisoned by animal venoms. It is suggested, that livestock bitten by contaminated shrews, reptiles, scorpions, beetles and spiders shows signs of poisoning. The authors present various possible therapies for the sick livestock.

BACKGROUND: In a military or terrorist scenario, combination of organophosphorus compounds (OP) poisoning with physical trauma requiring surgical treatment and thus general anaesthesia are possible. Previous in vitro studies showed an altered potency of relevant anaesthetics during cholinergic crisis. Hence, it is not clear, which anaesthetics are suitable to achieve the necessary stage of surgical anaesthesia in OP poisoning.
METHODS: In the present study, different anaesthetic regimens (ketamine-midazolam, propofol-fentanyl, thiopental-fentanyl), relevant in military emergency medicine, wer

INTRODUCTION: Acute poisoning is a significant international public health issue and one of the leading causes of death in the emergency department (ED). In the absence of any previous reports describing the poisoning profile in Syria, we present this study to assess the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of poisoning over 21 years.
METHODS: We collected the data retrospectively from the Syrian Poisons Information Centre (SPIC) from January 1999 until December 2020. The data included patients who had accidental or non-accidental exposure to poisons, either by drugs, medicaments, and

Palicourea marcgravii (Rubiaceae) is considered the most important toxic plant affecting livestock farming in Brazil. This study describes an outbreak of spontaneous poisoning by P. marcgravii in sheep. Forty-nine sheep died while showing clinical signs of sudden death after having access to the plant. During the necropsy, P. marcgravii leaves were observed in the rumens of the animals. Histopathological analysis demonstrated hydropic degeneration of the kidneys. Monofluoracetate concentration obtained in Palicourea samples was 0.53% (5.3 μg/mg). These findings collectively indicate that the a

Zinc phosphide, a readily-available rodenticide, poses a significant risk for intoxication in animals. Animals have been poisoned by ingesting treated bait or the carcasses of poisoned rodents. Toxicity is due to the liberation of phosphine gas in the stomach. Clinical signs include central nervous system excitation, depression and vomition. Similarities of clinical signs with other central nervous system toxicants make the diagnosis difficult without a specific diagnostic test. The procedure outlined in this paper detects phosphine liberated from zinc phosphide by the addition of hydrochloric
