Diagnosis in Kallmann's syndrome is often erroneous and results in the administration of inadequate therapy. The aim of the study was to define characteristic features of a course of disease and to administer adequate therapy. It has been established that cases of Kallmann's syndrome are rather frequent. Patients with hypogonadism should be examined with respect to anosmia because such a combination suggests the diagnosis of Kallmann's syndrome. The selection of a therapeutic method should be strictly individual bearing in mind a degree of hypoplasia and the presence of cryptorchism. In the co

INTRODUCTION: Anosmia can have a significant impact on well-being and quality of life. Due to an ageing population and the coronavirus disease 2019, increasing numbers of patients are seeking online information on anosmia. This report systematically assesses the readability and quality of online information on anosmia.
METHODS: The terms 'anosmia' and 'loss of smell' were entered into Google. The first 50 websites generated for each search term were screened. Readability was assessed using the Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease Score (FRES), Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL), Simple Measure of Gobbl

More than a year and a half after the beginning of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, symptoms, such as loss of smell and taste (anosmia and ageusia, respectively), remain difficult to characterize and quantify, especially in children, since no validated tests to assess these disorders are available. However, these symptoms can also be seen in children, although less frequently than observed in the adult population. In this article, we present the results of a national survey that collected the responses of 267 Italian pediatricians on the presence of anosmia and ageusia in chil

COVID-19 pandemic spreads worldwide, with more than 100 million positive cases and more than 2 million deaths. From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, several otolaryngologists described many cases of a sudden loss of smell (anosmia) associated with the disease with or without additional symptoms. Anosmia is often the first and sometimes the only sign in the asymptomatic carriers of COVID-19. Still, this disorder is underestimated, and it is not life-threatening. However, it significantly decreases the quality of life. This olfactory dysfunction continues in several cases even after the n

IMPORTANCE: Anosmia, the loss of the sense of smell, has profound implications for patient safety, well-being, and quality of life, and it is a predictor of patient frailty and mortality. Exposure to air pollution may be an olfactory insult that contributes to the development of anosmia.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter of no more than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) with anosmia.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case-control study examined individuals who presented from January 1, 2013, through December 31, 20

Patients with anosmia exhibit structural and functional brain abnormalities. The present study explored changes in brain white matter (WM) in non-neurodegenerative anosmia using diffusion-tensor-based network analysis. Twenty patients with anosmia and sixteen healthy controls were recruited in the cross-sectional, case-control study. Participants underwent olfactory tests (orthonasal and retronasal), neuropsychological assessment (cognitive function and depressive symptoms) and diffusion tensor imaging measurement. Tract-Based Spatial Statistics, graph theoretical analysis and Network-Based St

This case report describes a physician in the early 30ies with subjective anosmia and ageusia as the major presenting symptoms of COVID-19. Apart from a week of slightly runny nose when coming from cold to warm air, the only symptom was a sudden onset of persistent anosmia and ageusia. Two weeks after normalisation of the mild sino-nasal symptoms, the patient was tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, and anosmia was verified with Sniffin' Sticks tests. Hypogeusia was verified with taste screening and two validated taste tests. Olfactory and gustatory loss may be underestimated symptoms of COVID-19.

Background: This systematic review had three aims: i) to determine the frequency of anosmia (or other smell disorders) and dysgeusia (or other taste disorders) in COVID-19 patients; ii) to determine whether anosmia or dysgeusia are independently associated with COVID-19 diagnosis; and iii) to determine whether anosmia or dysgeusia are prognostic factors for impaired outcomes among COVID-19 patients. Methods: On April 20 th, 2020, we search MEDLINE, Embase, Global Health, Scopus, Web of Science and MedXriv. We used terms related to COVID-19, smell and taste disorders. We selected case series, c

RATIONALE: A sudden onset of anosmia has been recently recognized as a symptom of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we describe a case of complete anosmia in a young male with COVID-19. Although he had fever and odynophagia, no abnormalities were observed in his nasopharyngeal mucosa, suggesting that his anosmia resulted from olfactory neuropathy.
DIAGNOSES: COVID-19 was confirmed by RNA detection in nasopharyngeal swab specimen.
INTERVENTIONS: The patient received olfactory training and B complex vitamins.
OUTCOMES: On day 30, the patient reported complete recovery o

The diagnosis of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is based on the identification of common symptoms such as fever, tiredness and dry cough. Anosmia and ageusia are also in fact symptoms of the infection with the new coronavirus and recently were considered as symptoms by the World Health Organization. In this case report we present the new onset anosmia during the COVID-19 pandemic. The patient, 31-year-old, reported olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions as initial symptoms of mild-to-moderate form of the COVID-19. Therefore, chemosensory dysfunctions should serve as a warning to health prof

COVID-19, an ongoing world pandemic, is caused by SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2). Many organizations have recognized that COVID-19 patients may have sudden loss of smell or taste and have included these symptoms in their diagnostic guidelines. However, the occurrence of anosmia and dysgeusia in COVID-19 reinfection is yet to be ascertained.

We performed whole exome or genome sequencing in eight multiply affected families with ostensibly isolated congenital anosmia. Hypothesis-free analyses based on the assumption of fully penetrant recessive/dominant/X-linked models obtained no strong single candidate variant in any of these families. In total, these eight families showed 548 rare segregating variants that were predicted to be damaging, in 510 genes. Three Kallmann syndrome genes (FGFR1, SEMA3A, and CHD7) were identified. We performed permutation-based analysis to test for overall enrichment of these 510 genes carrying these 548

Congenital general anosmia (CGA) is a neurological disorder entailing a complete innate inability to sense odors. While the mechanisms underlying vertebrate olfaction have been studied in detail, there are still gaps in our understanding of the molecular genetic basis of innate olfactory disorders. Applying whole-exome sequencing to a family multiply affected with CGA, we identified three members with a rare X-linked missense mutation in the TENM1 (teneurin 1) gene (ENST00000422452:c.C4829T). In Drosophila melanogaster, TENM1 functions in synaptic-partner-matching between axons of olfactory se

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In congenital anosmia, the OB and OT can be aplastic or hypoplastic. In clinical routine, these are sometimes difficult to assess. We thus wanted to investigate morphologic differences of the OS in patients with IA since birth or early childhood in comparison with controls, to investigate whether there is a depth of OS that is predictive of IA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Within the context of a 2-center study, we investigated 36 patients with IA in comparison with 70 controls. MR imaging was performed with a standard quadrature head coil (1.5T; T1- and T2-weighted spin-ech

Chemosensory dysfunction is relatively common. This article describes a series of 306 patients who presented with anosmia. We divided olfactory disorders into those associated with interruption of the transport of stimulus and those associated with damage to either peripheral or central nervous system structures. Nasal and paranasal sinus disease (transport interruption) was found to be causative in 67% of patients presenting with anosmia. These patients are generally 45 years old, the loss of olfaction is progressive and associated with additional nasal symptoms. Upper respiratory infection w
