Introduction to Spine Injuries in the Pickleball Athlete.

INTRODUCTION: Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States. Despite its popularity, there is limited research on pickleball-related orthopaedic injuries, particularly in the spine. This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of spinal injuries in pickleball players and offers insights into injury patterns and risk factors. METHODS: A retrospective review from our urban tertiary medical center's electronic medical record from 2013 to 2023 was done using OpenAI's Generative Pretrained Transformer-4 model to identify pickleball-related orthopaedic injuries. After ar

Gymnastics-Related Injuries for the Female Athlete.

Artistic gymnastics is a demanding sport that puts unique stressors on the female athlete's body, predisposing them to certain acute and chronic conditions. Intense and repetitive upper extremity weight-bearing, particularly in skeletally immature gymnasts, can contribute to capitellar osteochondritis dissecans and distal radial physeal injuries. Repetitive lumbar hyperextension and rotation can contribute to spondylolysis. Physicians treating adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in gymnasts may consider additional counseling or modified treatment to maximize outcomes while aligning with athletic g

Baseball injuries in adolescent athletes with ADHD.

At the intersection of injury-prone sports such as baseball and conditions like ADHD that affect all aspects of life, there is a lack of research. This limits the availability of preventive care programs designed to target potential risks and promote a safe experience. In this retrospective cohort study, we assess the frequency of injury in youth baseball players with and without ADHD, along with further investigation into how treatment with stimulant medication may modify risk factors. The data for this study were obtained in deidentified, aggregate format from the TriNetX research database.

Lower extremity injuries in the baseball athlete.

Baseball is unique in its multiple facets: pitching, hitting, base rounding, and fielding are distinct activities that require different athletic skills to perform at a high level. Likewise, these different aspects of the game can contribute to a multitude of varying injuries. While high-velocity overhead throwing, along with batting, can produce a plethora of upper extremity injuries that often garner attention, injuries to the lower extremity can severely impact a player's performance and ability to compete. The rigors of the short, explosive sprinting required for base running, as well as t

Ankle and Foot Injuries in the Young Athlete.

Injuries to the ankle and foot are common in the young athlete, especially with increasing participation and high levels of competitiveness in youth sports programs. Knowledge of the normal development of the foot and ankle is crucial to understand age-specific injury patterns because acute or chronic/repetitive stress to the developing skeleton results in injuries that differ from those seen in adults. Congenital abnormalities may also predispose children to increased risk of injury and pain. Radiologists must be aware of these distinctions to diagnose and classify injuries correctly for opti

[Muscular injuries of athletes : Importance of ultrasound].

CLINICAL/METHODICAL ISSUE: Muscular injuries represent the most common musculoskeletal lesions. Especially in professional athletes an imaging clarification is essential in order to define the exact location of the lesion, the affected muscles, the extent and degree of the injury as well as to define possible concomitant complications. The best possible therapy can be initiated and a necessary rest period for a low risk resumption of sporting activity can be individually specified. STANDARD RADIOLOGICAL METHODS/METHODICAL INNOVATIONS: Due to technical improvements, for example mobile devices

Shoulder Injuries in the Overhead Throwing Athlete.

The overhead pitching motion is a coordinated sequence of movements that subjects the shoulder to extreme forces. The ultimate goal of this complex, dynamic activity is to generate high ball velocity and accuracy. In doing so, repetitive throwing can cause adaptive and pathologic changes in the thrower's shoulder. This article reviews the relevant shoulder anatomy, the kinetic chain, and throwing mechanics, as well as common shoulder injuries and surgical options for the treating orthopedic surgeon.

Common overuse injuries in the young athlete.

Pediatric overuse injury is a common complaint presenting to pediatricians. Overuse injury can affect the soft tissues or bone, and results from an imbalance between training and load to the tissues and recovery time. In the skeletally immature athlete, physeal and apophyseal tissue is particularly vulnerable to overuse resulting in different patterns of injury compared to adults. Awareness of age-dependent patterns of overuse is necessary for proper recognition, treatment, and prevention of injury. This article reviews the most common pediatric overuse injuries with emphasis on risk factors,

Rotator cuff injuries in adolescent athletes.

The cause of rotator cuff injuries in the young athlete has been described as an overuse injury related to internal impingement. Abduction coupled with external rotation is believed to impinge on the rotator cuff, specifically the supraspinatus, and lead to undersurface tears that can progress to full-thickness tears. This impingement is believed to be worsened with increased range of motion and instability in overhead athletes. A retrospective review of seven patients diagnosed with rotator cuff injuries was performed to better understand this shoulder injury pattern. The type of sport played

Bone stress injuries of the leg in athletes.

Bone stress injuries, whose incidence is increasing among competitive and recreational athletes, represent a pathophysiological continuum along which a bone responds to a changing mechanical environment. Frank stress fracture is the endpoint of this process, resulting from the accumulation of microinjuries due to repeated abnormal stresses. The legs are largely the most frequently affected bone district. The aim of this paper is to review the imaging findings of the whole spectrum of stress-induced bone lesions of the leg in athletes. We emphasise the role of computed tomography and magnetic r

The athlete's hand: ligament and tendon injury.

Hand injuries are common, accounting for up to 20% of emergency department visits nationwide. An understanding of the complex and detailed anatomical relationships of small joints facilitates the accurate diagnosis of many common sports-related injuries of the hand. We review the common ligamentous and tendinous injuries of the hand including collateral ligament injuries, gamekeeper's thumb, extensor mechanism injuries, pulley injuries, boutonniere deformities, and mallet and jersey lesions. The mechanism of injury, clinical presentation and treatment, pertinent anatomy, and imaging findings a

Upper extremity injuries in young athletes.

Injuries are becoming increasingly prevalent in pediatric athletes. Many of these injuries are diagnosed clinically and do not require imaging for diagnosis, but the sheer increase in numbers of injuries means that radiologists are evaluating more of them. Some injuries that young athletes sustain are simply due to trauma, such as falls, and may be experienced outside sports just as easily; however, others are peculiar to athletic activities. Many of the latter are chronic overuse injuries as opposed to acute injuries and have characteristic appearances. The types of injuries young athletes in

Treatment of meniscal injuries in young athletes.

The young, active patient with a meniscal tear poses a significant challenge for the surgeon. Multiple factors influence the treatment of meniscal pathology and the ultimate goal of meniscal surgery should be to remove only torn and nonfunctional tissue by limited meniscectomy or to repair amenable tears. The chondroprotective significance of the meniscus has influenced the current treatment of meniscal injuries in young athletes with the emphasis on repairing meniscus tears to include complex tears and tears in the avascular zone. Partial meniscectomy and meniscal repair techniques have provi

Upper extremity injuries in the adolescent athlete.

There has been a significant increase in youth sports participation and athletic activities over the past 3 decades. With the increase in participation, there has been a commensurate rise in the number of sports-related injuries. A majority of these injuries are due to overuse as athletes frequently compete in multiple sports with year round competition and training. As higher demands are placed on these young athletes, the likelihood of injury during and individual's playing career continues to increase. This review will focus on both overuse and traumatic injuries of the upper extremity in t
