A new species of Macrocypraea (Gastropoda, Cypraeidae) from Trindade Island, Brazil, including phenotypic differentiation from remaining congeneric species.

Macrocypraea mammoth is a new species from Trindade, a remote oceanic island located 1160 km off Espírito Santo, Brazil. This isolated species is described in a detailed morphological scenario that includes all Recent congeneric species. The detailed anatomy of two Recent species, M. zebra and M. cervinetta, were described in a previous paper. The remaining one, M. cervus, is included herein. Brief taxonomical comments on all these species is also included. The new species can be distinguished from other Western Atlantic species by its larger size, proportionally heavier and more solid shell,

Organochlorine and heavy metal residues in black duck eggs from the Atlantic Flyway, 1978.

Black duck (Anas rubripes) eggs were collected during 1978 in the Atlantic Flyway. One egg from each of 49 clutches was analyzed for organochlorine compounds and mercury. DDE was detected in 39 eggs, ranging from 0.09 ppm to 3.4 ppm, wet weight. DDE residues were highest in eggs from Delaware, where the mean DDE level was 2.0 ppm. DDT and TDE were present at low levels in only five and four eggs, respectively. PCBs resembling Aroclor 1260 were detected in 24 eggs and ranged from 0.43 ppm to 2.9 ppm. Eggs from Massachusetts and Rhode Island contained an average of greater than 1.0 ppm PCBs, but

Fluoride supplements and changes in tooth decay on the Island of Tristan da Cunha: 1966-1996.

BACKGROUND: The island of Tristan Da Cunha is one of the few examples in the world of a remote enclosed community. The inhabitants of the island were transported to England in 1961 as a result of a volcanic eruption and during their time in England they received a detailed dental health examination. They were later examined back on the island in 1966 by Dr John Fisher and in 1982 a school fluoride supplementation programme was introduced. AIM: The present paper reports the results of the first dental health survey to be carried out on the island since the introduction of a regular school fluo

A new Plasmodium Marchiafava & Celli, 1885 (Apicomplexa: Haemosporida) species in Cory's Shearwater (Calonectris borealis) [Cory]) (Aves: Procellariiformes) stranded in a coastal area in Brazil.

Cory's Shearwater (Calonectris borealis), a migratory seabird from the Procellariidae family, is widely distributed across the Atlantic Ocean. It breeds on islands of Azores, Madeira, Canary, and Berlengas, and winters in coastal areas of South America and Africa. This species' wide habitat range contributes to pathogen exchange across global regions. Plasmodium, a genus of apicomplexan parasites causing avian malaria, affects many wild bird species worldwide. Although rare in seabirds, Plasmodium infections can significantly impact these hosts. We identified and characterized a new Plasmodium

Monitoring and Modeling Tree Bat (Genera: Lasiurus, Lasionycteris) Occurrence Using Acoustics on Structures off the Mid-Atlantic Coast-Implications for Offshore Wind Development.

In eastern North America, "tree bats" (Genera: Lasiurus and Lasionycteris) are highly susceptible to collisions with wind energy turbines and are known to fly offshore during migration. This raises concern about ongoing expansion of offshore wind-energy development off the Atlantic Coast. Season, atmospheric conditions, and site-level characteristics such as local habitat (e.g., forest coverage) have been shown to influence wind turbine collision rates by bats onshore, and therefore may be related to risk offshore. Therefore, to assess the factors affecting coastal presence of bats, we continu

Update on methodologies available for ciguatoxin determination: perspectives to confront the onset of ciguatera fish poisoning in Europe.

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) occurs mainly when humans ingest finfish contaminated with ciguatoxins (CTXs). The complexity and variability of such toxins have made it difficult to develop reliable methods to routinely monitor CFP with specificity and sensitivity. This review aims to describe the methodologies available for CTX detection, including those based on the toxicological, biochemical, chemical, and pharmaceutical properties of CTXs. Selecting any of these methodological approaches for routine monitoring of ciguatera may be dependent upon the applicability of the method. However, ide

Pathological and epidemiological assessment of cranial crassicaudiasis in stranded cetaceans from the Canary Islands (1999-2024).

Crassicauda nematodes in cetaceans infect various organs, including the genitourinary system, subcutaneous tissues, circulatory system, and cranial structures such as the pterygoid sacs. In the cranial region, they may induce osteolytic lesions, potentially leading to neurological impairment, disorientation, and contributing to stranding and death. This study investigated the epidemiology and pathology of cranial crassicaudiasis in cetaceans stranded in the Canary Islands between 1999 and 2024, with emphasis on associated central nervous system (CNS) lesions. The pterygoid sacs of 438 cetacean

[Age of menopause onset in Canary Islands women].

BACKGROUND: To establish the age at menopause in the Canary woman. To study the possible influence of habitat, socioeconomical status and other possible factors on it. METHODS: From an initial population of 742 women, we previously excluded those that were not menopausal at the moment of the study and those that suffered it as a result of a oophorectomy. We included 394 women that had a natural menopause in the study group. RESULTS: The mean age of menopause was 48.6 years old. There were no statistical differences between the natural or urban areas. Neither the age of menarche nor the numbe

Organic ultraviolet filters in the blubber of two free-ranging deep-diving cetacean species.

The increasing use of personal care products has led to the widespread of organic UV filters (oUVFs) in marine ecosystems, yet their occurrence and potential impacts on pelagic and deep-sea environments remain unclear. This study assessed oUVFs contamination in the blubber of two deep-diving cetacean species -the short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) and the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus)-off Madeira Island, Eastern North Atlantic. Using microwave-assisted extraction and UHPLC-MS/MS, four of eleven targeted oUVFs were detected in blubber: homosalate, 2-ethylhexyl salicyla

A PELAGIC OUTBREAK OF AVIAN CHOLERA IN NORTH AMERICAN GULLS: SCAVENGING AS A PRIMARY MECHANISM FOR TRANSMISSION?

Avian cholera, caused by the bacterium Pasteurella multocida , is an endemic disease globally, often causing annual epizootics in North American wild bird populations with thousands of mortalities. From December 2006 to March 2007, an avian cholera outbreak caused mortality in marine birds off the coast of Atlantic Canada, largely centered 300-400 km off the coast of the island of Newfoundland. Scavenging gulls ( Larus spp.) were the primary species detected; however, mortality was also identified in Black-legged Kittiwakes ( Rissa tridactyla ) and one Common Raven ( Corvus corax ), a nonmarin

Effectiveness of emamectin benzoate for treatment of Lepeophtheirus salmonis on farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in the Bay of Fundy, Canada.

Emamectin benzoate (an avermectin chemotherapeutant administered to fish as an in-feed treatment) has been used to treat infestations of sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis on farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, Canada, since 1999. This retrospective study examined the effectiveness of 114 emamectin benzoate treatment episodes from 2004 to 2008 across 54 farms. Study objectives were to establish whether changes in the effectiveness of emamectin benzoate were present for this period, examine factors associated with treatment outcome, and determine variables that

Surveillance for Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in feral cats on Prince Edward Island reveals low prevalence.

Aelurostrongylus abstrusus is a metastrongyloid nematode of domestic and wild felids with a cosmopolitan distribution. In Canada, confirmed cases have been reported from several provinces, but no published data exist for Prince Edward Island (PEI). This study aimed to determine the occurrence of A. abstrusus in feral cats from PEI. Between January and December 2024, fecal samples were collected opportunistically from feral cats presented for trap-neuter-return (TNR) surgery at the Atlantic Veterinary College. The Baermann technique was used to detect first-stage larvae, which were identified m

Contrasting effects of marine and terrestrially derived dissolved organic matter on mercury speciation and bioavailability in seawater.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is the only species of mercury (Hg) to biomagnify in aquatic food-webs to levels that are a widespread concern for human and ecological health. Here we investigate the association between dissolved organic matter (DOM) in seawater and Hg speciation and uptake using experimental data and field measurements from Long Island Sound (LIS) and the Northwestern Atlantic continental margin. We measured differences in DOM composition across sampling stations using excitation emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy and further separated DOM into terrestrial and marine components u

A comparison of pectoral fin contact behaviour for three distinct dolphin populations.

Tactile exchanges involving the pectoral fin have been documented in a variety of dolphin species. Several functions (e.g., social, hygienic) have been offered as possible explanations for when and why dolphins exchange pectoral fin contacts. In this study, we compared pectoral fin contact between dolphin dyads from three distinct dolphin populations: two groups of wild dolphins; Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) from The Bahamas and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) from around Mikura Island, Japan; and one group of captive bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatu

Morphology of the deep-sea copepod Bobkabata kabatabobbus (Lernaeosoleidae: Poecilostomatoida) and amended diagnosis of Lernaeosoleidae.

New morphological information on the deep-sea parasitic copepod Bobkabata kabatabobbus Hogans and Benz, 1990 (Lernaeosoleidae: Poecilostomatoida) is provided based on 2 newly discovered, complete specimens collected from a pallid sculpin, Cottunculus thomsoni (Gunther, 1882), captured in water 1,463 m deep in Welker Canyon off Rhode Island (western North Atlantic). The first antennae of both specimens were tiny, indistinctly segmented, and armed with spiniform setae. Terminal segments of the second antennae were robust hooks and were impossible to disengage from the host without severing them

Three decades of Canadian marine harmful algal events: Phytoplankton and phycotoxins of concern to human and ecosystem health.

Spatial and temporal trends of marine harmful algal events in Canada over the last three decades were examined using data from the Harmful Algal Event Database (HAEDAT). This database contains the most complete record of algal blooms, phycotoxins and shellfish harvesting area closures in Canada since 1987. This 30-year review of 593 Canadian HAEDAT records from 1988 to 2017, together with other Canadian data and publications, shows that recurring harmful algal events have been widespread throughout both the Atlantic and Pacific coastal regions. The 367 paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) reports r
