The aim of this study was to elucidate whether autonomic nervous system dysfunction exists in patients with Behçet's disease by pupillometric tests. Thirty-one patients with Behçet's disease with a mean age of 41.3 years (range 21-64) and 41 control subjects with a mean age of 39.5 years (range 18-66) were selected for the study. To test the autonomic nervous system, four pupillometric techniques were used: pupil cycle time (PCT), dark-adapted pupil size (DAPS), 0.05% pilocarpine drop test, and 1% phenylephrine drop test. In all four tests, there were significant differences between the patien…

CONCLUSIONS: The findings show similar abnormalities in autonomic nervous system activity in childhood-onset schizophrenia to those found in adult chronic schizophrenia, thus supporting the hypothesis of continuity of the childhood and adult forms of the illness. Comparisons with data from other childhood disorders suggest that …

The human internal environment is regulated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS), endocrine glands and neuropeptides as well as the integrated activity of these three systems. The ANS is divided into thoraco-lumbar (sympathetic) and cranio-sacral (parasympathetic) divisions. They comprise two neurons: pre- and post-ganglionic fibers. The limbic system and hypothalamus are known to regulate the peripheral ANS through descending pathways in the brain stem and spinal cord. Cardinal semiologies of the ANS disorders are classified as follows: cardiovascular (orthostatic hypotension, a variety of s…

The authors present in their review recent findings on the importance of the autonomous nervous system in disorders of the cardiac rhythm. They emphasize its modulating action in the development, maintenance and termination of many arrhythmias. Vegetative nervous influences may play a part in people without organic heart disease but are manifested more markedly above all at sites of previous damage. Mechanisms by which the autonomous nervous system influences the development and course of arrhythmias are very complicated and so far not completely elucidated. In addition to a generalized tonus

To delineate a possible interaction of atrial natriuretic peptide ANF-(99-126) with autonomic nervous system function in humans, a spectrum of indices were assessed in 10 healthy young men during a 90 min iv administration of a) synthetic ANF-(99-126) 50 micrograms bolus followed by 0.025 micrograms.kg-1.min-1, b) the potent vasodilator sodium nitroprusside (SNP) 0.35 micrograms.kg-1. min-1, or c) vehicle 0.9% NaCl40 ml and 20% albumin 5 ml, in random sequence. Plasma immunoreactive ANF (irANF) rose from 32 to 1700 pg.ml-1 during the ANF-(99-126) infusion and was stable during SNP or vehicle. …

We have endeavoured to present an integrated and dynamic overview of the interaction between the autonomic nervous system and cardiac arrhythmias. Our purpose was not to be comprehensive, detailed, or all inclusive but to present a clinically relevant summary of some of the areas where autonomic tone may be pertinent. Clearly, most arrhythmias are not the result of a primary autonomic nervous system disorder. However, subtle and overt alterations in autonomic tone, interacting with rate, pressure, cardiac volume, contractility, and the intrinsic myocardial electrophysiologic properties likely …

The effects of 1-alphacetylmethadol (LAAM) on heart rate and force of contraction of isolated guinea-pig hearts and on release of tritium from sympathetic nerves were investigated. In vitro perfusion with LAAM depressed resting heart rate and right ventricular pressure. Nerve stimulation-induced tritium overflow was inhibited in a concentration related manner by LAAM. Increasing the calcium concentration in the perfusate partially inhibited the negative chronotropy and completely prevented the negative inotropic effect. One micromolar atropine prevented the negative chronotropy, partially inhi

BACKGROUND: Formal laboratory testing of autonomic function is reported to distinguish between patients with Parkinson's disease and those w … nical observation that Parkinson's disease is often indistinguishable from MSA when it involves the autonomic nervous system. The clinical combination of parkinsonism and dysautonomia is as likely to be caused by Parkinson's disease as by MSA. Current clinical criteria for Parkinson's disease and MSA that direct patients with dysautonomia into the MSA group may be inappro …

Simultaneous activation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems is crucial for the initiation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). However, unbalanced activation of the sympathetic system is characteristic of autonomic remodeling in long-standing persistent AF. Moreover, the adrenergic activation-induced metabolic derangements provide a milieu for acute AF and promote the transition from the paroxysmal to the persistent phase of AF. On the other hand, cholinergic activation ameliorates the maladaptive metabolic remodeling in the face of metabolic challenges. Selective inhibit

Patients with diffuse toxic goiter and those with vegetative dystonia and paroxysmal permanent disorders are shown to have parasympathetic deficiency and moderate sympathetic insufficiency. In toxic goiter patients hyperhydrosis was accompanied by normal conduction along the vegetative perspiration fibers and a significant increase in foot potential amplitude. In patients having vegetative crises there was reduced conduction along the perspiration fibers. Clinical symptoms of enhanced sympathetic activity in both the diseases can be explained by weak parasympathetic influences and hypersensiti

This article reviewed the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and the development of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is the most common reproductive endocrine disorder among women of reproductive age. Its primary characteristics include persistent anovulation, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovarian morphology, often accompanied by disturbances in glucose and lipid metabolism. The body's functions are regulated by the autonomic nervous system, which consists mainly of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The autonomic nervous system helps maintain homeosta…
