Behaviour of macrophages in experimental mice trichinellosis was investigated using the immunoenzymatic technique with monoclonal antibodies CD11b/CD18 within the framework of avidin-biotin-DAB. The maximum and earliest mobilization of macrophages 7 day post infection (dpi) was observed in the lamina propria of the intestinal mucosa. The highest level of macrophages in the muscles tissue was noted on day 21 of infection, however as early as in 28 dpi, their maximum level was observed inside the larval capsules. At the Cancer Institute, Madras, India, we have performed immunophenotyping in 125 untreated cases of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia using a panel of 16 monoclonal antibodies and the avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase technique in a haematology autoanalyser (Technicon Hi system). Our results demonstrate a marked difference in the phenotypic pattern of ALL compared to Western countries, the predominant finding being a relative excess of T-ALL and a paucity of C-ALL cases. Age distribution of C-ALL reveals a peak at 2-6 years in paediatric ALL cases.

The IgG, IgA, IgM levels in sera of 51 patients suffered from pulmonary ascariasis and the serum IgE level in 16 of them were determined using single immunodiffusion technique or biotin-avidin enzyme immunosorbent assay (ABC-ELISA). The results showed that the IgM level of the patients was approaching to that of the normals while IgG (169.77 +/- 46.91 U/ml), IgA (308.39 +/- 91.83 U/ml) and IgE (458.90 +/- 273.64 U/ml) levels of the patients increased significantly. This suggests that some components of mites may have stimulated the humoral immunoreactions of the host.

This report describes an improved technique for sensitive and specific localization of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) in routinely processed paraffin-embedded, formalin-fixed tissue sections using DNAse pretreatment and the avidin-biotin complex (ABC) technique. Epidermal Langerhans' cells (LC) were investigated in fresh cryostat sections of ten biopsies from patients with mycologically proven tinea cruris, using OKT6 monoclonal antibodies and avidin-biotin-immunoperoxidase. Compared to the controls, more epidermal LC and an increased number of LC in the upper half of the epidermis were found in the sections from tinea patients.
