Anisometropic amblyopia: axial length versus corneal curvature in children with severe refractive imbalance.

PURPOSE: To define the ocular parameters associated with anisometropic ambylopia in children with severe hyperopia, myopia, or astigmatism in 1 eye. METHODS: Anisometropic and fellow eyes of 13 children, ages 7-8, with anisometropia >3.0 D and amblyopia without strabismus or other visually significant ocular pathology were studied. Axial length, corneal curvature, anterior chamber depth, and corneal diameter measurements of amblyopic and fellow eyes were obtained using the IOL Master (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA). RESULTS: Comparing amblyopic eyes with unaffected fellow eyes as reference,

Posterior scleral reinforcement for the treatment of myopic traction maculopathy.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the clinical effectiveness of posterior scleral reinforcement(PSR) for the treatment of myopic traction maculopathy (MTM). METHODS: This was a prospective study of 32 eyes from 20 patients with MTM treated with PSR using genipin-cross-linked donor sclera. The length of the scleral strip used for the surgery was designed to be 1.5-times the axial length of the eye, whereas its width was 0.4-times the axial length of the eye. The optical coherence tomography images, spherical equivalent of refractive error, axial length, best corrected visual acuity,

Reduced retinol (vitamin A) and α-tocopherol (vitamin E) blood levels and increased myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in children with high myopia.

The study assessed selected parameters of redox status in the plasma of patients suffering from high myopia (HM). Thirty-five children with mean age 13.7 ± 2.7 years with HM and 40 healthy children were included. Plasma redox status parameters were determined using colorimetric kits. The levels of retinol, α-tocopherol and coenzyme Q10 were determined with a high-performance liquid chromatograph. Negative correlations were observed between the concentrations of retinol and the axial length of the eye (r = - 0.514 p < 0.001). Increased myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity (p < 0.018), and decreased c

Asymmetry of posterior pole remodeling in high myopia.

To characterize posterior pole morphology in high myopia using widefield OCT angiography (OCTA)–derived curvature metrics, with particular emphasis on asymmetry and regional variation, and to determine whether posterior deformation shows structured spatial patterns beyond conventional axial length and refractive measures. Dual–center, cross–sectional observational study. Widefield (24 × 20 mm) OCTA scans were used to derive posterior pole curvature maps. Posterior curvature heterogeneity was quantified using the posterior heterogeneity index (PHI slope), and directional asymmetry was quantifie

Long-wavelength (red) light produces hyperopia in juvenile and adolescent tree shrews.

In infant tree shrews, exposure to narrow-band long-wavelength (red) light, that stimulates long-wavelength sensitive cones almost exclusively, slows axial elongation and produces hyperopia. We asked if red light produces hyperopia in juvenile and adolescent animals, ages when plus lenses are ineffective. Animals were raised in fluorescent colony lighting (100-300 lux) until they began 13days of red-light treatment at 11 (n=5, "infant"), 35 (n=5, "juvenile") or 95 (n=5, "adolescent") days of visual experience (DVE). LEDs provided 527-749 lux on the cage floor. To control for the higher red ill

Axial Length Asymmetry in Patients with Unilateral Retinal Detachment.

Background and Objectives: Increased axial length is a major risk factor for retinal detachment. This study explored whether, in individuals presenting with unilateral disease, the longer eye was more likely to have rhegmatogenous disease. Materials and Methods: A consecutive cohort of 276 patients (100 female; mean age 62 ± 10 years), presenting with PVD-related retinal detachment or retinal tear between 2018 and 2024 in South Australia, had their axial length measured by partial coherence interferometry. Two-sample and paired t-tests were used to compare the affected and fellow eyes. Results

In vivo biometry in the mouse eye with low coherence interferometry.

PURPOSE: A major drawback of the mouse model of myopia is that the ocular dimensions cannot be measured in vivo, and that histological techniques post-mortem suffer from limited resolution. We have tested the potential of a newly developed technique, optical low coherence interferometry (OLCI), adapted for short measurement distances by Meditec, Carl Zeiss, Jena, Germany (the "ACMaster"). Using this technique, ocular biometry was performed in mice with normal vision and after deprivation of form vision. METHODS: Axial eye length, corneal thickness and anterior chamber depth were measured in 2

A Conserved Mechanism in Eye Optical Development: Lens Nucleus Centralization in Xenopus laevis.

Developing eye optics, determined by the lens and cornea, must coordinate with the axial length of growing eyes to focus light onto the retina to form an image. It was found that zebrafish (Danio rerio) lens nuclei are initially anteriorly localized in optical axes in larvae, then centralize at older stages. An anteriorly placed lens nucleus would increase lens power, thereby likely enabling a functional optical system in larvae, where eye axial length is short. To assess if alike mechanisms occur in other aquatic animals, we studied the clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, a fully aquatic species sim

Myopia following penetrating keratoplasty for keratoconus.

The frequent occurrence of spherical myopia after penetrating keratoplasty for keratoconus is partly the result of the excessive dioptric power of the grafted cornea which occurs when the diameter selected for the donor button is greater than the diameter of the host incision. This excessive power could be reduced by eliminating disparity between the diameters of the graft and host. To determine what proportion of the myopia in these eyes would persist as a result of axial myopia the axial lengths of 60 patients grafted for keratoconus and 25 emmetropic controls were compared. A keratometry, o

Changes in the ocular dimensions after trabeculectomy.

Ocular wall dimensions (axial eye length, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, vitreous length, thickness and volume of the ocular wall) were determined by echobiometry on 10 eyes of 10 patients with glaucoma one day before and four days after trabeculectomy. The results showed significant differences: decreased axial eye length, and increased thickness and volume of the ocular wall were found after trabeculectomy. The observed changes in the ocular dimensions might be due to ocular hypotony and postoperative inflammation. Echographic follow-up of the changes in the ocular wall is a useful

Variations of axial eye shortening in response to positive defocus over the day.

PURPOSE: Short-term visually induced axial eye shortening and choroidal thickening are of interest since they may be linked to reduced myopia development. We studied whether axial eye shortening, induced by imposing positive defocus, varies throughout the day, and whether emmetropes and myopes differ in their responses. METHODS: Twenty young adults (10 emmetropes, 10 myopes) completed a daytime protocol conducted between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, consisting of repeated 30- minute sessions of movie watching while the right eye was myopically defocused by a trial lens, imposing approximately +3D of
