SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND: Initial therapy for osteoporotic vertebral fractures involves bed rest, orthotic use, and plaster casts. However, in some cases, pain persists because of progressive vertebral collapse or pseudoarthrosis. Prediction of these complications immediately after fractures can facilitate early proactive treatment despite the early prognosis being generally poor.

Schistosomiasis, an intravascular parasitic disease caused by Schistosoma mansoni, is related to alterations of murine vascular reactivity in the mesenteric bed, characterized by an impairment of the l-arginine/NO pathway and an increased potency of 5-hydroxytryptamine. Biological methanation in trickle bed reactors (TBRs) offers a sustainable pathway for converting carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen (H2) into low-carbon methane (CH4). A kinetic study of butane uptake and trichloroethylene (TCE) aerobic cometabolism was conducted by two suspended-cell (15 and 30°C) and two attached-cell (15 and 30°C) consortia obtained from the indigenous biomass of a TCE-contaminated aquifer. The shift from suspended to attached cells resulted in an increase of butane (15 and 30°C) and TCE (15°C) biodegradation rates, and a significant decrease of butane inhibition on TCE biodegradation. Reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethene (perchloroethylene; PCE) was observed at 20 degrees C in a fixed-bed column, filled with a mixture (3:1) of anaerobic sediment from the Rhine river and anaerobic granular sludge.
