BACKGROUND: 10 million people are chronically infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) in sub-Saharan Africa. The assessment of viral genotypes and treatment response in this region is necessary to achieve the WHO target of worldwide elimination of viral hepatitis by 2030. In Africa, infertility constitutes a major gynaecological complaint and causes enormous socio-psychological stress to the patients. This study examined retrospective data at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria, over a 5-year period to determine the factors associated with tubal infertility. Tubal infertility was confirmed in 13.5% of the 1181 new cases of infertility over the study period. The mean age of the patients was 33.2+/-9.5 years. This study was designed to examine sexual behaviour and contraceptive use among in-school adolescents in Benin City, Nigeria. A random sample of 431 females and 440 males aged 14-21 years from secondary schools in Benin City, Nigeria, were interviewed using a structured pretested questionnaire. The results show that 23% of the females and 40% of males had initiated sexual intercourse. Among those who had done so, the median age at first sexual debut was 16.8 years for girls and 15.4 years for boys. Skin lesions are the best known manifestations of Mycobacterium ulcerans infection. However osteomyelitis is not uncommon with incidences as high as 14 p. 100 having been reported. The literature contains little specific data on bone lesions. The seasonal variation in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections in children was examined in Benin City. Nasopharyngeal washes were obtained from children under 3 years hospitalised for acute lower respiratory infections during two seasons - rainy season (June-August) and dry season (December-February). The ocular findings in 50 cases of homozygous sickle cell disease are reported. Ocular abnormalities were found in 45 (90%) of them. Conjunctival vascular anomalies, tortuosity of the retinal vessels, particularly the veins and pigmented chorioretinal lesions were the commonest ocular manifestations; central retinal artery occlusion was found in one patient. Angioid streaks, retinitis proliferans and retinal detachment were not observed. Visual acuity was normal in 49 out of 50 patients; the exception was the patient with central artery occlusion.
