A vibrational pump-probe and FTIR study was performed on two different adducts of Vaska's complex in two different sets of binary solvent mixtures. The carbonyl vibrational mode in the oxygen adduct exhibits solvatochromic shifts of ~10 cm(-1) in either benzyl alcohol or chloroform relative to benzene-d6, whereas this vibration is nearly unchanged for the iodine adduct for the same three solvents. Four cases of contact leukoderma associated with the application of hair rinses and permanent and semipermanent hair colors are described. To our knowledge, this association has not been previously reported. Although none had evidence of pigment loss in other sites, Koebner-induced vitiligo cannot be excluded. In our cases hair color ingredients seem to have had a selective toxic effect on melanocytes. Further study of pigment loss from hair colors is warranted, especially in animal and in vitro assays. A multicomponent reaction involving diphenylphosphine, S8, and alcohols has been developed for the efficient dehydrative synthesis of dithiophosphinates. This method enables the one-pot construction of four chemical bonds (S-C-PS), delivering the target products with exclusive selectivity. A nitroxyl-radical-catalyzed oxidation of alcohols using diisopropyl azodicarboxylate (DIAD) as the terminal oxidant is reported. A variety of primary and secondary alcohols including aliphatic, benzylic, and allylic alcohols are efficiently oxidized to their corresponding aldehydes and ketones without overoxidation to carboxylic acid. 1,2-Diols are oxidized to hydroxyl ketones or diketones depending on the amount of DIAD used.

A metal-free electrophotochemical C(sp3)-H arylation was developed under mild conditions. This method enables a switchable synthesis of diaryl alcohols and diaryl alkanes from inactive benzylic carbons. More importantly, a cheap and safe mediator N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) was developed, which was employed for the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) process of the benzylic C-H bond. In addition, this active radical was captured and identified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR).

A benzylating method enabled by acid-catalyzed hydrolactonization of benzyl 4-methylpent-4-enoate (BMP) was reported. Key advantages of the method include the structural simplicity, stability, and synthetic scalability of the reagents, mild and weakly acid catalytic conditions with excellent functional group tolerance, and high efficiency with broad applicability to various alcohols. Moreover, this method is further expanded to efficient naphthylmethylation and steroidation. The latter facilitates diversity-oriented synthesis of pseudo-steroidal glycosides.

Reaction of tri-O-acetyluridine (1) with benzyl bromide or 2-chloroacetophenone in the presence of K2CO3 gave the N3-substituted analogues 2a,c. Condensation of 1 with (+/-)-1-phenylethanol or 3,5-dimethylbenzyl alcohol using the Mitsunobu reaction also gave 2b,d in good yields. These compounds were allowed to react with Lawesson's reagent and were subsequently treated with ammonia to afford the 4-thiouracil derivatives 5a-d. Compounds 5a-c showed moderate hypnotic activity in mice. However, N3-(3,5-dimethyl)benzyl derivatives 3d, 5d were found to be almost inactive in this assay.
