Change in Alcohol Consumption and Binge Drinking in University Students During the Early COVID-19 Pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: Young adults have been overly affected by the containment measures against COVID-19 and, consequently, worsening in mental health and change in health behavior have been reported. Because the life phase of emerging adulthood is crucial for developing health behaviors, this study aims to examine increase in alcohol consumption, single and multiple binge drinking, and associated factors in students during lockdown and post-lockdown periods. METHODS: A prospective open cohort study design with nine survey time points between April 2020 and June 2021 was conducted. The present study u…

Ethanol binge drinking exposure affects alveolar bone quality and aggravates bone loss in experimentally-induced periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a multifactorial inflammatory disease of tooth supporting tissues caused by oral biofilms, influenced by environmental and genetic factors, among others. Ethanol consumption has been considered a factor that enhances alveolar bone loss, especially in high doses. The present study aims to investigate the changes promoted by ethanol binge drinking per se or associated with ligature-induced periodontal breakdown on alveolar bone loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two Wistar rats were randomly allocated into four groups: control (C), ethanol (3g/kg/day; 3 days On-4 d…

Altered frontostriatal white matter microstructure is associated with familial alcoholism and future binge drinking in adolescence.

Adolescence is a time of significant neurobiological development, including changes in white matter microstructure. Familial alcoholism and adolescent binge-drinking have both been associated with altered white matter microstructure; however, the temporal nature of these effects, and their interaction, is unclear. Using diffusion-weighted imaging and voxel-wise multilevel modeling, the effects of familial alcoholism and future binge-drinking on white matter microstructural development were assessed in 45 adolescents, who went on to binge-drink (but were alcohol-naive at baseline), and 68 adole

Adolescent but not adult ethanol binge drinking modulates ethanol behavioral effects in mice later in life.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder is a serious illness marked by uncontrollable drinking and a negative withdrawal state when not using. Alco … CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our results suggest that adolescence is a critical period of sensitivity and binge drinking that can lead to lasting changes in ethanol intake in adulthood. Further research will be required in order to more fully examine the neurochemical mechanisms underlying the lasting changes in adulthood.

Fetal brain during a binge drinking episode: a dynamic susceptibility contrast MRI fetal brain perfusion study.

We assessed the effects of a single episode of maternal alcohol intoxication on fetal brain blood perfusion in three pregnant dams (baboons) at the 24th week of pregnancy using dynamic susceptibility contrast magnetic resonance imaging. After the oral administration of alcohol, there was a four-fold increase in the peak contrast concentrations in the fetal brain. In addition, we observed a two- to three-fold increase in the contrast uptake and washout rates in the fetal brain. The underlying mechanisms of these changes are unknown, but we hypothesized that these could include the alcohol-media

Socioeconomic and psychosocial exposures across the life course and binge drinking in adulthood: population-based study.

Despite recognition of the health risks of binge drinking, its life-course precursors have not been widely examined. Data from the Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study (1984-1989) were used to investigate the association between socioeconomic and psychosocial exposures across the life course and binge drinking in a population-based sample of 2,316 middle-aged men. Binge drinking was defined as drinking at least four bottles of beer, one bottle of wine, one bottle of strong wine, or six servings of spirits on a single occasion. A composite indicator of childhood socioeconomic positio…

The Effect of Serotonin 5-HT2C Receptor Modulation on Binge Drinking and Alcohol-Seeking in Female Mice.

Alcohol misuse remains a leading cause of preventable death worldwide, prompting research into novel pharmacotherapies for alcohol use disorder (AUD). This study investigated the therapeutic potential of full agonism or positive allosteric modulation of the serotonin 2C receptor (5-HT2CR) in addressing alcohol binge drinking and seeking behaviours in mice. Using a drinking-in-the-dark paradigm and a context-induced reinstatement model following punishment-imposed abstinence, we assessed the acute effects of 5-HT2CR ligands lorcaserin, CYD-1-79, VA012 and CTW0415 on alcohol intake and seeking b…

Effects of a binge drinking history or an acute episode on the stress response in adolescents: an experimental gender perspective.

Adolescence is a period of vulnerability to alcohol binge drinking (BD), being this consumption pattern very common among adolescents and young adults. Furthermore, there is a lack of experimental studies evaluating the effects of alcohol in adolescent population of both sexes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of having a binge drinking (BD) consumption history and/or an acute BD episode on the stress response in male and female adolescents. Participants were 150 adolescents (75 females and 75 males). According to their drinking pattern, subjects were assigned to one of three …

Using drinking in the dark to model prenatal binge-like exposure to ethanol in C57BL/6J mice.

Animal models of prenatal ethanol exposure are necessary to more fully understand the effects of ethanol on the developing embryo/fetus. However, most models employ procedures that may produce additional maternal stress beyond that produced by ethanol alone. We employed a daily limited-access ethanol intake model called Drinking in the Dark (DID) to assess the effects of voluntary maternal binge-like ethanol intake on the developing mouse. Evidence suggests that binge exposure may be particularly harmful to the embryo/fetus, perhaps due to the relatively higher blood ethanol concentrations ach

After how many drinks does someone experience acute consequences-determining thresholds for binge drinking based on two event-level studies.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The threshold of 4+/5+ drinks per occasion has been used for decades in alcohol research to distinguish between non-ris … ear particularly suitable to estimate thresholds at which acute alcohol-related consequences occur. Binge drinking thresholds of 4+/5+ (women/men) drinks, equivalent to 40+/50+ g pure alcohol, predict the occurrence of consequences accurately in general but are too low to predict severe acute alcohol-related consequences.

Dissecting the role of mineralocorticoid receptors in binge-like alcohol drinking in mice: Finerenone as a potential pharmacotherapy.

RATIONALE: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a serious public health issue, for which only few pharmacological treatments are currently available. The mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) has been investigated as a potential pharmacotherapeutic target for AUD. Treatment with the prototypical MR antagonist spironolactone has been associated with a reduction of alcohol consumption in rodents and humans. However, spironolactone is a nonselective MR antagonist and has additional activity on other systems, such as androgen and progesterone receptors. OBJECTIVES: The present study investigated the specific r

Relationships between binge drinking and substance-free reinforcement in a sample of college students: a preliminary investigation.

Heavy episodic drinking is a relatively common phenomenon among college students, and students who engage in binge drinking are at increased risk for a variety of adverse consequences. This paper investigates relationships between substance use and reinforcement derived from specific categories of substance-free activities among a sample of 256 college undergraduates. Data from a standardized behavioral inventory were used to compare the frequency, pleasure, and reinforcement potential of substance-free events and activities experienced by binge drinkers and a comparison group. Binge drinkers …

Prenatal THC exposure and binge-like alcohol drinking in early adolescence: From sex-specific drinking vulnerability to abnormal endocannabinoid-dopamine nexus in the nucleus accumbens.

BACKGROUND: Endocannabinoid (eCB) signalling is pivotal for brain programming, including the reward system neurodevelopment. Prenatal exposure to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabis psychoactive component, can perturb eCB tone via CB1 receptor and alter the response to salient stimuli. AIM: We hypothesise that prenatal THC exposure disrupts the eCB-dopamine nexus in the nucleus accumbens (NAc), predisposing the offspring to excessive alcohol drinking. METHODS: Using a 3-week intermittent access (IA) two-bottle choice paradigm, we tested binge-like alcohol drinking in prenatally exposed t
