An increasing number of soft tissue filler substances have been introduced to the beauty market outside the U.S. which lackexperimental and clinical data in support of their claim. Ten commercially available filler substances were examined for biocompatibility and durability: 0.1 cc of each substance was injected deep intradermally into the volar forearm of one of the authors and observed for clinical reaction and permanence. At 1, 3, 6, and 9 months the test sites were excised, histologically examined, and graded according to foreign body reactions classification. Collagen (Zyplast) was phago

Creating biomaterials that are suited for clinical application is still hampered by a lack of understanding of the interaction between a cell and the biomaterial surface it grows on. This surface communication can strongly impact cellular behavior, which in turn affects the chances of a successful interaction between a material and the host tissue. Transcriptomics data have previously been linked to measurements of biomaterial properties in order to explain the biological mechanisms underlying these cell-biomaterial interactions. However, such multi-assay data are highly complex and therefore

Their capability to change their shape on demand has created significant interest for shape-memory polymers (SMPs) in minimally invasive surgery. To evaluate the miniaturization of SMP matrices for small-sized implants or controlled release systems, a strategy to prepare and evaluate microsized SMP model particles is required. This methodological study reports the emulsion-based preparation of ~30 μm microparticles (MPs) from a phase-segregated SMP, poly(ε-caprolactone) [PCL] and poly(ω-pentadecalactone) [PPDL], with a particular focus on the effects of process parameters such as polymer solve

While most forms of multicellular life have developed a calcium-based skeleton, a few specialized organisms complement their body plan with silica. However, of all recent animals, only sponges (phylum Porifera) are able to polymerize silica enzymatically mediated in order to generate massive siliceous skeletal elements (spicules) during a unique reaction, at ambient temperature and pressure. During this biomineralization process (i.e., biosilicification) hydrated, amorphous silica is deposited within highly specialized sponge cells, ultimately resulting in structures that range in size from mi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Glottic insufficiency secondary to vocal fold scarring, atrophy, or paresis remains a clinically challenging problem for the laryngologist. Numerous methods have been described in the treatment of glottic insufficiency, belying the complexity of the problem. Type I thyroplasty and injection of fat, fascia, and gelatin powder have been the mainstay of treatment to date, but the ability to restore a normal mucosal waveform to a damaged vocal fold remains an elusive goal.
RECENT FINDINGS: Advances in the material and biomedical sciences have allowed the introduction of newer s

Biocompatible magnesium alloys represent revolutionary implantable materials in dentistry and orthopedics but face challenges due to rapid biocorrosion, necessitating protective coatings to mitigate dysfunction. Directly integrating durable protective coatings onto Mg surfaces is challenging because of intrinsic low coating compactness. Herein, inspired by tooth enamel, a novel highly compact dual-protection inorganic-protein (inorganicPro) coating is in situ constructed on Mg surfaces through bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein-boosted reaction between sodium fluoride (NaF) and Mg substrates.

Optimal treatment of extensive donor sites in patients with major burn injuries can be frustrating for both physician and nursing staffs and can cause great discomfort for the patients. Slow healing or infections of donor site wounds may impede other aspects of burn care and delay further skin grafting. The posterior trunk is a particularly good site for donor site harvesting in patients who have incurred extensive burns. Posterior donor site wounds have been noted to heal with less hypertrophic scar compared with other donor sites, because the epidermis and dermis allow for thicker grafts and

There is a small percentage of burned patients who would benefit from early excision of burns and coverage of exposed large joints to prevent septic arthritis and preserve movement. There are many reports in the literature on flap coverage of exposed joints or delayed primary excision of burns with subsequent flap coverage, but the immediate excision of burn to fascia with use of local vascularized fascial flaps to cover open knee and ankle joints has not apparently been described. This case report illustrates the basic plastic surgery techniques involved and the rationale behind such aggressi

Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) is an essential biomaterial for 3D bioprinting due to its excellent biocompatibility and easily tunable physical properties. GelMA quality strongly depends on the number of methacrylic groups introduced during the synthesis. We present a direct UV assay for routine quantification of methacrylic groups in GelMA. The accuracy and precision of the method are comparable to those of NMR techniques. Moreover, the method is independent of sample concentration and adapted for gelatin from various sources. Additionally, we developed a UV-based method for determining methacr

Hemostatic materials are essential to control bleeding, promoting wound healing, and reducing complications across a wide range of medical applications, including surgical procedures, trauma care, and minimally invasive interventions. But commercial hemostatic materials still possess several disadvantages. Therefore, the development of safe, effective, and user-friendly hemostatic materials remains a critical goal. Recent advances led to the development of different hemostatic agents, including inorganic materials (kaolin, silica, and zeolites), biobased polymers (polysaccharides, chitosan, al

Vapor-deposited polymer films offer a solvent-free, scalable route to engineer optically functional biointerfaces with tunable geometry. Recently developed technologies, such as condensed droplet polymerization (CDP), enable the direct fabrication of polymer dome arrays (PDAs) with precise control over size, curvature, and array density, as key parameters for high-resolution imaging and cellular compatibility. This perspective highlights the unique advantages of CDP-based microlenses as solid immersion lenses for live-cell imaging, pointing to their potential integration into tissue scaffolds,

In situ self-assembly in living systems is referred to as the processes that regulate assembly by stimuli-responsive reactions at target sites under physiological conditions. Due to the advantages of precisely forming well-defined nanostructures at pathological lesions, in situ-formed assemblies with tailored bioactivity are promising for the development of next-generation biomedical agents. In this Perspective, we summarize the progress of in situ self-assembly of peptides in living cells with an emphasis on the state-of-the-art strategies regulating assembly processes, establishing complexit

Two-dimensional (2D) protein films can be used to modify the properties of surfaces, and find applications predominantly in the fields of biomaterials, lithography, optics and electronics. However, it is difficult to produce scalable homogeneous and robust protein films with an easy, low-cost, green and efficient method. Further challenges include encapsulating and releasing functional building blocks in the film without inactivating them, and maintaining or improving the bioactivities of proteins used for the formation of the films. Here we detail the process to prepare large 2D protein films

Inter-particle secondary crosslinks allow microporous annealed particle (MAP) hydrogels to be formed. Methods to introduce secondary crosslinking networks in MAP hydrogels include particle jamming, annealing with covalent bonds, and reversible noncovalent interactions. Here, we investigate the effect of two different approaches to secondary crosslinking of polyethylene glycol (PEG) microgels via reversible guest-host interactions. We generated a dual-particle MAP-PEG hydrogel using two species of PEG microgels, one functionalized with the guest molecule, adamantane, and the other with the host

The development of dynamic covalent chemistry opens the way to the design of materials able to be reprocessed by an internal exchange reaction under thermal stimulus. Imine exchange differs from other exchange reactions by its relatively low temperature of activation. In this study, amine-functionalized star-shaped PEG-PLA and an aldehyde-functionalized hydroxyurethane modifier were combined to produce PEG-PLA/hydroxyurethane networks incorporating imine bonds. The thermal and mechanical properties of these new materials were evaluated as a function of the initial ratio of amine/aldehyde used

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) reinforced with graphene has gained substantial interest as a biomaterial, where the tribological and mechanical behavior of PLA/graphene composites are major concerns. This study aims to develop PLA-based biocomposites reinforced with graphene oxide (GO) that have enhanced tribological capabilities. First, homogenous dispersions of GO and GO treated with the anionic surfactant dioctyl sulfosuccinate sodium salt (AOT) were retained. Then, poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) biopolymer and PLLA/GO, PLLA/GO(AOT), PLA/GO(AOT), and PLLA/polyethylene glycol (PEG)/GO biocomposite samp
