Bartonella species are recognized globally as emerging zoonotic pathogens. Small mammals such as rodents and shrews are implicated as major natural reservoirs for these microbial agents. Nevertheless, in several tropical countries, like India, the diversity of Bartonella in small mammals remain unexplored and limited information exists on the natural transmission cycles (reservoirs and vectors) of these bacteria. Using a multi-locus sequencing approach, we investigated the prevalence, haplotype diversity, and phylogenetic affinities of Bartonella in small mammals and their associated mites in

Lambert et al question our retrospective and holistic epidemiological assessment of the role of chytridiomycosis in amphibian declines. Their alternative assessment is narrow and provides an incomplete evaluation of evidence. Adopting this approach limits understanding of infectious disease impacts and hampers conservation efforts. We reaffirm that our study provides unambiguous evidence that chytridiomycosis has affected at least 501 amphibian species.

The shallow underground of rock debris is a unique animal refuge. Nevertheless, the research of this habitat lags far behind the study of caves and soil, due to technical and time-consuming demands. Data on Myriapoda in scree habitat from eleven localities in seven different geomorphological units of the Czech and Slovak Republics were processed. Based on previous studies, as well as knowledge of cave and soil fauna, it was hypothesised that the occurrence of a varied and peculiar fauna would show a pattern of depth distribution with variations due to local specificities. From 2005-2016 (at le

The composition, density, diversity, and temporal distribution of mosquito species and the influence of temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall on these data were investigated in 50 sites across five land cover classes (forest, savannah, barren, village, and agriculture) in southeastern Senegal. Mosquitoes were collected monthly in each site between June 2009 and March 2011, with three people collecting mosquitoes landing on their legs for one to four consecutive days. In total, 81,219 specimens, belonging to 60 species and 7 genera, were collected. The most abundant species were Aedes fu

BACKGROUND: Palm oil consumption is potentially deleterious to human health, and its production has resulted in 11 million hectares of deforestation globally. Importing roughly 394,000 metric tons of palm oil in 2012 alone, the Burmese government has recently pushed for intensive oil palm development to sate domestic demand for consumption and become international market players. Given well-studied linkages between biodiversity loss and ecosystem instability, this study aims to characterize the nature of deforestation for oil palm production in Myanmar, its relationship to increased biodiversi…

With agricultural activities widely cited as drivers of biodiversity loss globally, it is important to distinguish between agricultural practices that have negative impacts and those with positive impacts on biodiversity. To measure on-farm biodiversity outcomes, the direction and magnitude of impacts need to be assessed. Outcomes can be measured using indicators. However, there is currently a multitude of biodiversity indicators available. This abundance makes monitoring biodiversity outcomes challenging, as farmers lack clarity on what to measure. This study presents a shortlist of biodivers…

Fermented vegetables in Yunnan Province, China, harbor abundant microbial diversity. However, the development of indigenous starter cultures remains under-utilized. Genomic information regarding Leuconostoc (L.) mesenteroides isolates from this region is particularly scarce. To assess the genomic characteristics of eight L. mesenteroides isolates from traditional Yunnan fermented vegetables, we performed whole-genome sequencing and conducted a comparative analysis with 21 publicly available vegetable-derived genomes. Comparative genomic analysis revealed marked variation in genome size and pla

Timely and reliable information on species occurrence and distribution is essential for biodiversity conservation, but conventional surveys are often limited by incomplete spatial coverage, high costs, and infrequent updates. These limitations are particularly relevant for medium- and large-sized mammals, whose distributions may respond rapidly to human disturbance and land-use change. Here, we evaluated the potential of long-term, curated mass-media records to support biodiversity knowledge by analyzing The Eyes of the Secret Land (TESL), a Chinese television program based mainly on infrared …

Excessive exploitation of land resources has driven global land-use changes that diminish ecological spaces, posing significant challenges to biodiversity conservation. To synergize ecological protection with high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin while balancing biodiversity conservation and socioeconomic needs in Shaanxi Province, this study designed three scenarios-Baseline (natural evolution), Beautiful Shaanxi (ecological priority), and Harmonious Shaanxi (coordinated development)-based on intrinsic linkages among land-use types, disturbance intensity, and biodiversity. Using …

PURPOSE: Global diets exert substantial pressure on both public and planetary health. At the same time, diets are becoming more monotonous, with growing reliance on a limited number of staple species. Food biodiversity, the variety of biological species in the diet, and dietary environmental impact represent complementary, but distinct, dimensions of sustainable diets. However, because these dimensions capture different aspects of sustainability, it remains unclear whether diets with higher food biodiversity are also associated with lower environmental impacts.
METHODS: We examined associatio…

Urban blue and green spaces, such as streams and adjacent riparian areas, constitute important biodiversity refuges in highly anthropogenically -modified areas, but this depends on their ecological characteristics, preservation and management. Birds are useful indicators of ecosystem quality due to their relatively high trophic position. They may also disseminate and control pathogenic organisms, being good indicators for human and animal health risks. In our study, we used presence/absence data of avian species, and a wide environmental characterization of 102 urban streams across five Europe…

Ambitions to mainstream Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and achieve global implementation are hampered by the lack of transdisciplinary integration across disciplines and practice. Ecological knowledge, including an understanding of how biodiversity can support, and be supported by, NbS design and implementation remains an under-studied component of the NbS concept despite its critical importance. Starting with a brief primer on the major roles that biodiversity plays in NbS performance, we present eight recommendations for enhancing biodiversity in NbS planning and implementation. This narrative…

Moths (Lepidoptera) are sensitive to anthropogenic threats and serve as valuable bioindicators. Despite the remarkable diversity and abundance of Lepidoptera globally, there is a lack of information on how moth species are impacted by urbanization. Notably, very little is known about moths in the most populus city of the United States, New York City, where pervasive urban pollutants, artificial light at night, land cover change, and habitat fragmentation are severe. We examined the effects of urbanization on moth biodiversity in New York City, with a focus on green spaces. We used citizen scie…

Biodiversity monitoring based on DNA metabarcoding depends on primer performance. Here, we develop a new metabarcoding primer pair that targets a ∼318 bp fragment of the 28S rRNA gene that is highly conserved across branches of the tree of life. We apply these novel primers to detect coral reef biodiversity and perform a direct comparison with the most commonly used metabarcoding marker for coral reefs, targeting the cyctochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene (DOI 10.1186/1742-9994-10-34). We show that our novel 28S primers detect a broader taxonomic scope of species across phyla and classes wit…

In recent years, the number of omics studies aimed at characterizing fungal communities in fermented foods, such as table olives, has steadily increased. Moreover, advances in bioinformatics and artificial intelligence have provided new resources for analysing these datasets. Among these tools, supervised machine learning (ML) models, particularly tree-based algorithms, are especially valuable for their interpretability and their ability to identify underlying patterns. In this study, we evaluated three target variables of table olive samples (processing type, country of origin, and olive cult

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent gynecologic endocrine disorder characterized by menstrual irregularities, elevated androgen levels, and ovulatory dysfunction. Its etiology is multifactorial. Emerging evidence indicates that PCOS patients exhibit diminished gut microbiota (GM) diversity and altered microbial ratios, contributing to the metabolic derangements observed in these individuals. This review elucidates the role of GM in the pathogenesis and metabolic disorders of PCOS, encompassing insulin resistance (IR), hormonal imbalances, bile acid metabolic disorders, Interleukin-

Long-term analyses of biodiversity data highlight a 'biodiversity conservation paradox': biological communities show substantial species turnover over the past century1,2, but changes in species richness are marginal1,3-5. Most studies, however, have focused only on the incidence of species, and have not considered changes in local abundance. Here we asked whether analysing changes in the cover of plant species could reveal previously unrecognized patterns of biodiversity change and provide insights into the underlying mechanisms. We compiled and analysed a dataset of 7,738 permanent and semi-…

Faecalibacterium prausnitzii is prevalent in the human gut and is a potential candidate for next-generation probiotics (NGPs) or biotherapeutics. However, the biodiversity and physiological characteristics of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii remain unclear. This study isolated 26 novel F. prausnitzii strains from human feces using a combination of negative screening and prime-specific PCR amplification (NSPA). Based on a 16S rRNA gene analysis, F. prausnitzii strains can be classified into two main phylogroups (phylogroups I and II), which were further clustered into five subgroups (I-A, II-B, II-…
