The nature, prevalence, and specificity of birefringent calcific particles in granulomas of sarcoidosis have been examined, including histochemical reactions, single particle, and microchemical analyses. Particular attention was paid to small ovoid forms of which most were calcium oxalate monohydrate. Theoretical calculations show that BBF has a large birefringence (Δn = 0.13 at 200 nm), which mainly originates from the infinite planar [Be2BO3F2]∞ layers. Neural- and endocrine mechanisms controlling degeneration of a dorsal longitudinal flight muscle, M112a, have been studied in adult Gryllus bimaculatus (Orthoptera: Gryllidae). Decapitation completely prevented muscle degeneration. Implantation of a pair of corpora allata or injection of juvenile hormone III into decapitated crickets caused muscle degeneration. DESIGN: Observational case report.
METHODS: Review of the clinical, laboratory, photographic, and pathologic records of a patient with a gouty tophus at the medial canthus.

A tophus was identified in a surgically resected, prolapsed mitral value in a patient with tophaceous gout. It had the characteristic histologic pattern and contained birefringent, dichroic crystals consistent with uric acid. This represented an incidental finding.
