Bio-inspired porous adsorbents with lotus-leaf-like hierarchical structures and mussel adhesive surfaces for high-capacity removal of toxic dyes.

Basic dyes are highly toxic and have adverse effects on humans such as accelerated heart rate, shock, cyanosis, and tissue necrosis upon ingestion or skin contact. Efficient removal of basic dye pollutants from wastewater is therefore essential for the protection of the environment and human health. Biomolecules exhibit excellent dye removal performance in terms of removal capacity, selectivity, and rate. However, their poor thermal/chemical stability precludes their large-scale industrial applications. Herein, porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) were utilized for the biomimetic construction of

Mussel and plant cell wall-inspired soy protein adhesives: High strength, flame retardancy, and mildew resistance.

Traditional soybean adhesives lack water resistance and are prone to microbial attack. Inspired by mussel adhesion and plant cell wall chemistry, we engineered a high-performance soybean-based adhesive with robust water and mildew resistance. The adhesive is equipped with a multiscale bonding network that is composed of tannic acid (TA) that has been depolymerised and grafted with epoxy compounds (E-DTA), borax (B), and soybean meal (SM). The adhesive's overall performance was improved by the construction of a highly cohesive cross-linked framework through the formation of imine bonds (Schiff

Hofmeister Effect-Driven Mussel-Inspired Hydrogel with Tunable Mechanics for Flexible Sensors.

Inspired by the adhesive proteins of mussels, we developed a dual-network hydrogel with robust adhesion and tunable mechanical properties for wearable sensors. A catechol-functionalized polymer (PAA-g-Dopa) was synthesized by grafting L-DOPA onto a poly(acrylic acid) backbone, introducing catechol groups capable of dynamic interfacial bonding. This adhesive component was copolymerized with acrylamide (AM) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to fabricate a tough, stretchable, and highly adhesive PVA-DOPA hydrogel. The PVA-DOPA hydrogel adhered strongly to a wide variety of substrates, regardless of t

Development of a method for estimating asari clam distribution by combining three-dimensional acoustic coring system and deep neural network.

Developing non-contact, non-destructive monitoring methods for marine life is crucial for sustainable resource management. Recent monitoring technologies and machine learning analysis advancements have enhanced underwater image and acoustic data acquisition. Systems to obtain 3D acoustic data from beneath the seafloor are being developed; however, manual analysis of large 3D datasets is challenging. Therefore, an automatic method for analyzing benthic resource distribution is needed. This study developed a system to estimate benthic resource distribution non-destructively by combining high-pre

When two evils are not equal: Differential biofouling of unionid bivalves by two invasive dreissenid species.

Byssate bivalves are ecosystem engineers with world-wide impact on aquatic communities through habitat forming and biofouling of hard-shelled organisms. In fresh waters, they are represented by invasive Ponto-Caspian dreissenid mussels spreading throughout Europe and North America. They negatively affect globally threatened unionid mussels by fouling, which deteriorates their condition and survival. The appearance of quagga mussels (D. rostriformis bugensis, QM) in areas occupied by zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha, ZM) usually has led to the replacement of ZM by QM. We combined long-term f

Transcriptomic response to GnRH down regulation by RNA interference in clam Ruditapes philippinarum, suggest possible role in reproductive function.

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) plays a key role in the control of the reproductive axis in vertebrates, however, little is known about its function in reproductive endocrine regulation in molluscs. In the present study, RNA-seq was used to construct transcriptomes of Ruditapes philippinarum testis and ovaries of control and GnRH suppressed individuals using RNA interference. GnRH suppression caused 112 and 169 enriched KEGG pathways in testis and ovary, with 92 pathways in common in both comparisons. The most enriched KEGG pathways occurred in the "Oxidative phosphorylation", "Dorso-ven

Bivalves as Emerging Model Systems to Study the Mechanisms and Evolution of Sex Determination: A Genomic Point of View.

Bivalves are a diverse group of molluscs that have recently attained a central role in plenty of biological research fields, thanks to their peculiar life history traits. Here, we propose that bivalves should be considered as emerging model systems also in sex-determination (SD) studies, since they would allow to investigate: 1) the transition between environmental and genetic SD, with respect to different reproductive backgrounds and sexual systems (from species with strict gonochorism to species with various forms of hermaphroditism); 2) the genomic evolution of sex chromosomes (SCs), consid

Evidence that a lineage of teleost-infecting blood flukes (Aporocotylidae) infects bivalves as intermediate hosts.

The family Aporocotylidae is recognized as having the widest intermediate host usage in the Digenea. Currently, intermediate host groups are clearly correlated with definitive host groups; all known life cycles of marine teleost-infecting aporocotylids involve polychaetes, those of freshwater teleost-infecting aporocotylids involve gastropods, and those of chondrichthyan-infecting aporocotylids involve bivalves. Here we report the life cycle for a marine elopomorph-infecting species, Elopicola bristowi Orélis-Ribeiro & Bullard in Orélis-Ribeiro, Halanych, Dang, Bakenhaster, Arias & Bullard, 20

Mussel Shells, a Valuable Calcium Resource for the Pharmaceutical Industry.

(1) Background: The mussel (Mytilus edulis, Mytilus galloprovincialis) is the most widespread lamellibranch mollusk, being fished on all coasts of the European seas. Mussels are also widely grown in Japan, China, and Spain, especially for food purposes. This paper shows an original technique for mussel shell processing for preparation of calcium salts, such as calcium levulinate. This process involves synthesis of calcium levulinate by treatment of Mytilus galloprovincialis shells with levulinic acid. The advantage of mussel shell utilization results in more straightforward qualitative composi

An efficient photograph-based quantitative method for assessing castrating trematode parasites in bivalve molluscs.

Parasitic castration of bivalves by trematodes is common, and may significantly reduce the reproductive capacity of ecologically important species. Understanding the intensity of infection is desirable, as it can indicate the time that has passed since infection, and influence the host's physiological and reproductive response. In addition, it is useful to know the developmental stage of the trematode, to understand trematode population trends and reproductive success. However, most existing methods (e.g. visually estimating the degree of infection) to assess intensity are approximate only and

Relative comparison of tissue specific bioaccumulation and radiation dose estimation in marine and freshwater bivalve molluscs following exposure to phosphorus-32.

With respect to environmental protection, understanding radionuclide bioconcentration is necessary to relate exposure to radiation dose and hence to biological responses. Few studies are available on tissue specific accumulation of short-lived radionuclides in aquatic invertebrates. Short-lived radionuclides such as 32Phosphorus (32P), although occurring in small quantities in the environment, are capable of concentrating in the biota, especially if they are chronically exposed. In this study, we firstly compared tissue specific bioaccumulation and release (depuration) of 32P in adult marine (

Subcellular distribution and trophic transfer of Pb from bivalves to the common prawn Palaemon serratus.

The edible clam Dosinia exoleta has been reported to accumulate high contents of lead (Pb) in soft tissues disregarding the levels of Pb in the environment. This is due to the retention of Pb in the form of metal rich granules (MRG) in their kidneys throughout the mollusc lifespan. The potential for trophic transfer of Pb in this form to predators is expected to be low, since metals in the form of MRG are generally supposed to be trophically unavailable, but this assumption is based on studies with other metals (Ag, Cd, Cu or Zn) and has not been demonstrated with Pb until now. This study was

Evaluation of the Impact of Mild Steaming and Heat Treatment on the Concentration of Okadaic Acid, Dinophysistoxin-2 and Dinophysistoxin-3 in Mussels.

This study explores the effect of laboratory and industrial steaming on mussels with toxin concentrations above and below the legal limit. We used mild conditions for steaming, 100 °C for 5 min in industrial processing, and up to 20 min in small-scale laboratory steaming. Also, we studied the effect of heat on the toxin concentration of mussels obtained from two different locations and the effect of heat on the levels of dinophysistoxins 3 (DTX3) in both the mussel matrix and in pure form (7-O-palmitoyl okadaic ester and 7-O-palmytoleyl okadaic ester). The results show that the loss of water d

Inability of non-proteolytic Clostridium botulinum to grow in mussels inoculated via immersion and packaged in high oxygen atmospheres.

A series of botulism challenge studies were conducted to determine if botulinum toxin would be produced in mussels (Mytilus edulis) inoculated with non-proteolytic Clostridium botulinum spores and held under modified atmosphere (MA) packaging conditions at normal (4 °C) and abusive (12 °C) temperatures. Spore mixtures of six strains of non-proteolytic C. botulinum were introduced into live mussels through immersion in a seawater solution with cultured algae. Mussels were packed in a commercial high-oxygen (60-65% O2) MA-package with a buffer, and also packed under a vacuum. Feeding live mussel

Contamination profiles of antifouling biocides in selected coastal regions of Malaysia.

The concentrations of butyltins (BTs) in sediment from Peninsular Malaysia along the Strait of Malacca and their spatial distribution are discussed. The concentrations of BTs were high in the southern part of Peninsular Malaysia where there is a lot of ship traffic, because trade is prosperous. The concentrations of monobutyltin (MBT), dibutyltin (DBT), and tributyltin (TBT) in sediment from the coastal waters of Peninsular Malaysia were in the range 4.1-242 microg/kg dry weight (dw), 1.1-186 microg/kg dw, and 0.7-228 microg/kg dw, respectively. A higher percentage of TBT was observed in the a

Mechanical disturbance affects haemocyte functionality in the Venus clam Chamelea gallina.

The clam Chamelea gallina is fairly common along the western coastline of the Adriatic Sea, where it is subjected to intense fishing. To evaluate possible causes of stress in clam populations, the effects of acute mechanical disturbance on haemocyte functionality were analysed in both laboratory and field experiments. Among the various sources of stress that clams undergo during commercial fishing by hydraulic dredges, water pressure and mechanical sorting were considered, and three increasing levels of stress were applied. A reduction in immunosurveillance was highlighted, concentrations of c

Biological availability of traffic-related platinum-group elements (palladium, platinum, and rhodium) and other metals to the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) in water containing road dust.

The uptake and bioaccumulation of 15 road dust metals by the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) were investigated in laboratory exposure studies with emphasis on the traffic-related platinum-group elements (PGEs) palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), and rhodium (Rh). The biological availability of the metals may depend on water characteristics, so the mussels were maintained in two types of water: nonchlorinated tap water and humic water of a bog lake, both of which contained dust of a moderately frequented road. After an exposure period of 26 weeks, soft tissues of the mussels were freeze-dried an

[An amphiphilic substance inhibits the mollusk capacity to fliter phytoplankton cells from water].

The effect of synthetic anionic surface active substance (SAS) sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS, 4 mg/l) on the kinetics of water filtration by mussel Mytilus edulis was studied. A suspension of algae Isochrysis galbana was added to the vessel with the mussels, and their filtration activity was measured by counting the concentration of the algae cells in the experimental vessels. Algae concentration was measured every 30 min for an hour and a half. The inhibiting effect on the mollusk filtration rate (FR) was qualitatively described. After the first 30 min filtration at 4 mg/l initial SDS concentrat

[A connective tissue tumor in the mussel Mytilus trossulus from a polluted region of Nakhodka Bay, the Sea of Japan].

A tumor was found for the first time in a mussel Mytilus trossulus from a heavily polluted area of Nakhodka Bay, Sea of Japan. Tumor cells were found in the connective tissue of different organs and also in gill vessels and hemal sinuses of the visceral mass. They were both attached and diffuse. The tumor was at an advanced stage, replacing the normal connective tissue cells, and formed nodes. The tumor cells were polymorphic, with a high nucleocytoplasmic ratio, and had a prominent nucleolus. The size of their nuclei was three to five times that of the nuclei of agranular hemocytes. The mitot
