It has been suggested that the release of cytokines with bone-resorbing activity from cells of the immune system might have a role in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis. We measured the secretion of the bone-resorbing products tumor necrosis factor, interleukin 1 beta and PGE2 by peripheral blood mononuclear cells from seven healthy postmenopausal women and 12 patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis. The angiogenic capability of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (MNCs) from patients with psoriasis was tested by lymphocyte-induced angiogenesis assay. Participation of blood born cells in rat Masugi nephritis was investigated with ultrastructural demonstration of peroxidase, in addition to conventional light and electron microscopies. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes appear immediately and transiently after injection of nephrotoxic serum. Hypercellularity in the early stage of the disease is consisted mainly of monocyte-macrophage. Proteinuria and infiltration of few monocytes are persistent through the course up to 124 days and focal sclerosis with hyaline material appears in the later stage.

In 10 blood samples from mothers who were studied after the delivery of a male infant and who had Y-body-containing cells in their circulations (mean value, 0.06%) the proportions of surface-Ig- and Y-body-positive lymphocytes were determined after passage through nylon wool. In each case one part of the sample was treated with pronase before the nylon wool incubation and the other was not. Passage through nylon wool of maternal lymphocytes not treated with pronase resulted in a drastic decrease of fetal cells, since only 1 Y-body-containing cell was found in 1 of the 10 maternal blood samples
