Therapeutic apheresis (TA) is an important treatment for certain conditions. TA refers to various procedures in which either plasma (plasmapheresis) or specific blood cell fractions (cyta-pheresis) are removed. These include, among others, extracorporeal photopheresis (EP), erythrocytapheresis (EA), therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), and therapeutic erythrocyte exchange (TEE). Anticoagulation is essential for maintaining the fluidity of extravascular blood on the apheresis circuit. Although both citrate and heparin are used as an anticoagulant during apheresis, citrate is preferred for the majority of exchange procedures because of its safety and effectiveness. Patients with extremely high triglyceride levels and associated lipemia are at high risk for acute pancreatitis. Two factors can increase triglyceride-rich lipoproteins; one is overproduction and other is a defect in clearance. Either mechanism can cause hypertriglyceridemia and both may exist simultaneously. Plasmapheresis was used in 9 patients and plasmacytapheresis in 27 patients with bronchial asthma. This was in 35 patients preceded by glomectomy. Inefficiency of the operation, presence of immunological changes was the basis for the apheresis procedures. No serious complications were observed. Both methods further the elimination of immune complexes. The treatment was positive in 33 of the 36 patients.

Seven patients infected with the filarial worm Loa loa received a treatment by cytapheresis in an attempt to lower the microfilaraemia. Microfilarial levels of between 6,000 and 38,500 ml, before extraction, were reduced, according to the case, by between 47 and 97% (mean 76%). BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Blood donor opinions and behaviours regarding marijuana use are not well known nor is the potential impact to the blood supply. We sought to assess opinions and frequency of marijuana use in proximity to blood donation via a survey of blood donors at a hospital-based blood collection site in a state where recreational marijuana use has been legal since 2012.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blood donors at least 18 years of age who donated between 2014 and 2019 were surveyed electronically, with all responses kept anonymous to encourage engagement and accurate reporting.
