Mapping quantitative trait loci underlying body weight changes that act at different times during high-fat diet challenge in collaborative cross mice.

Over one billion people worldwide suffer from obesity, and the number is continually rising. This epidemic is partly caused by the modern li … metabolic disorders. This study is focused on identifying quantitative trait loci (QTLs) underlying body weight changes by analyzing biweekly weight measurements in collaborative cross (CC) mice maintained on a high-fat diet for 12 weeks. QTL analysis, utilizing 525 mice from 55 CC lines (308 males and 217 females), revealed genome-wide significant QTLs on different …

Postgastrectomy Syndrome Assessment Scale (PGSAS)-45 and changes in body weight are useful tools for evaluation of reconstruction methods following distal gastrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Billroth-I (BI) and Roux-en-Y (RY) are well-known reconstruction methods that are conducted following distal gastrectomy. However, the relative merits of these 2 methods are not well documented. The newly developed Postgastrectomy Syndrome Assessment Scale (PGSAS)-45 is an integrated questionnaire consisting of 45 items, including 8 items from the 8-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-8), 15 items from the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale, and 22 items selected by gastric surgeons. Postoperative QOL ratings were evaluated for each reconstruction method using PGSAS-45. METHODS:

Menstrual Cycle Phase Is Associated With Changes in Body Weight, Bioimpedance, and Carbohydrate Intake, but Not in Resting Metabolic Rate in Physically Active Females.

This observational repeated-measures study investigated the effect of three menstrual cycle phases on resting metabolic rate (RMR), body composition, and dietary intake in 21 naturally menstruating, physically active females (age 24.9 ± 4.1 years; height 168.4 ± 7.8 cm). Measurements were scheduled during the early follicular (EFP), ovulatory, and mid-luteal (MLP) phases using menstrual bleeding onset and urinary luteinizing hormone tests. RMR was measured using indirect calorimetry, body composition via multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis, and dietary intake through 3-day food rec

Body Weight Change and Dementia Risk in Young and Middle-Aged Adults With Type 2 Diabetes and Depression: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

AIM: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and depression are established risk factors for dementia, yet clinically observable markers of neurocognitive vulnerability in younger adults with these comorbidities remain poorly characterized. We examined whether longitudinal body weight (BW) change is associated with incident dementia in young and middle-aged adults with T2DM and depression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analysed a nationwide cohort of 17 851 adults aged 20-59 years with T2DM and depression from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. BW change between two health screenings

Gradual increase in energy intake over 8 weeks with voluntary wheel running limits body weight change in male rats.

The influence of appetite and energy intake (EI) on energy compensation in response to chronic exercise remains poorly understood. This study examined the temporal impact of habitual exercise on EI and the homeostatic appetite regulators that influence energy compensation. Twelve-week-old male Sprague Dawley rats (n 30) fed an AIN-93M diet were randomised into one of three groups: (1) sedentary control (SED); (2) voluntary wheel exercise (EX) and (3) sedentary, weight-matched to aerobic exercise (SED-WM) for 8 weeks. Measures of EI, body weight and adiposity were assessed. Appetite-regulating

Association between dietary pesticide exposure profiles and body weight change in French adults: Results from the NutriNet-Santé cohort.

BACKGROUND: Pesticides cause a wide range of deleterious health effects, including metabolic disorders. Little is known about the effects of dietary pesticide exposure on body weight (BW) change in the general population. We aimed to investigate the role of dietary pesticide exposure in BW change among NutriNet-Santé participants, focusing on potential sexual dimorphism. METHODS: Participants completed a Food Frequency Questionnaire (2014), assessing conventional and organic food consumption. Dietary exposure from plant foods of 25 commonly used pesticides was estimated using a residue databa

Trajectories of body weight change and survival among patients with mCRC treated with systemic therapy: Pooled analysis from the ARCAD database.

BACKGROUND: Higher body mass index is associated with a higher incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) but also with improved survival in metastatic CRC (mCRC). Whether weight change after mCRC diagnosis is associated with survival remains largely unknown. METHODS: We analysed individual patient data for previously untreated patients enrolled in five phase 3 randomised trials conducted between 1998 and 2006. Weight measurements were prospectively collected at baseline and up to 59.4 months after diagnosis. We used stratified multivariable Cox models to assess the prognostic associations of weigh

Changes in visceral adiposity, body composition, and cardiometabolic profiles following a supervised mixed exercise program in women with normal-weight obesity and obesity.

OBJECTIVE: Normal-weight obesity (NWO) describes individuals with a normal body mass index (BMI) but elevated adiposity, potentially underestimating cardiometabolic risk. Mixed exercise may be particularly relevant for NWO, as it targets body composition, visceral adiposity, and cardiorespiratory fitness rather than weight loss alone. This study examined 12-week changes in DXA-derived body composition, regional adiposity, cardiorespiratory fitness, and cardiometabolic biomarkers in women with NWO and obesity (OB). METHODS: Sixty-seven women aged 22-45 years who completed baseline and post-int

Heterozygous females from a rat model for creatine transporter deficiency reveal altered behavioral response to stressors, normal body weight and slight metabolic changes.

Creatine (Cr) is an organic acid essential for recycling ATP, important in tissues with high energy demand such as muscle or brain. Cr is synthesized in a 2-step pathway by the enzymes AGAT and GAMT, and transported by SLC6A8 (also called CrT). Cerebral Cr deficiency syndromes (CCDS), due to AGAT, GAMT or CrT deficiencies, are metabolic diseases characterized by brain Cr deficiency, causing a range of clinical features such as severe neurodevelopmental delays and intellectual disability, behavioral disturbances, motor dysfunction and epilepsy. Among CCDS, the X-linked CrT deficiency (CTD) is t

Effects of different pharmacologic smoking cessation treatments on body weight changes and success rates in patients with nicotine dependence: A network meta-analysis.

Smoking cessation is a public health priority to reduce smoking-related morbidity and mortality. However, weight gain is a known primary reason for not trying to quit smoking. The aim of the current study was to investigate differences in weight gain associated with different pharmacological smoking cessation interventions. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that reported weight gain related to pharmacologic treatments for smoking cessation were analysed using network meta-analysis with a random effects model. Thirty-one RCTs with 5650 participants were included. Ten drugs and 22 regimens wer

Association of intentional changes in body weight with coronary heart disease event rates in overweight subjects who have an additional coronary risk factor.

Despite evidence that weight loss improves the severity of coronary heart disease (CHD) risk factors, a direct association between weight loss and CHD incidence has not been demonstrated. In 1994-2001, the authors conducted an observational study of intentional weight loss as related to CHD incidence among patients recruited from a network of clinics in Israel who received nutritional counseling from a dietitian to support the medical recommendation to lose weight. Subjects were outpatients aged 50-75 years with a body mass index of > or =27 kg/m(2), without CHD or cancer but with at least one

The progression of salt-wasting and the body weight change during the first 2 weeks of life in classical 21-hydroxylase deficiency patients.

BACKGROUND: One of the major purposes of newborn screening for 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21OHD) is preventing life-threatening adrenal crisis. However, the details of adrenal crisis in newborns are not precisely documented. AIM: We aimed to clarify the clinical details of salt-wasting in newborn 21OHD patients. METHODS: Based on the follow-up survey of the screening in Tokyo from 1989 to 2017, we retrospectively analysed the conditions of classical 21OHD neonates before the initiation of therapy. RESULTS: One hundred classical 21OHD patients (55 male, 45 female) were analysed. The age at t

Changes in body weight after 24 weeks of vildagliptin therapy as a function of fasting glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: In order to test the hypothesis that the degree of weight change with the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor vildagliptin is dependent on the level of glycemic control at baseline, the weight changes from pooled monotherapy studies after 24 weeks of therapy with vildagliptin were assessed versus the fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels at baseline. METHODS: Data were pooled from eight clinical monotherapy trials including 2,340 previously drug-naïve patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who received vildagliptin monotherapy (50 mg once daily [n=359] or 50 mg twice daily [n=1,981]).
