Ontogenetic modelling of the petrous part of the temporal bone in man.

The inner and the outer layers of the petrous part of the temporal bone (p.p.t.b.) become definitive until the sixth intrauterine month. Therefore, the growth and modelling of the p.p.t.b. are subsequently achieved by apposition of the periosteal outer layer. Periosteal apposition takes place in the form of plates appearing successively. The author identified seven such plates concentrated around the canals passing through the p.p.t.b. and describes them in fetuses, premature infants and adults. Periosteal ossification may cause compression of nerves passing through the p.p.t.b. thus inducing

Genetic and Molecular Insights Into Genotype-Phenotype Relationships in Osteopathia Striata With Cranial Sclerosis (OSCS) Through the Analysis of Novel Mouse Wtx Mutant Alleles.

The X-linked WTX/AMER1 protein constitutes an important component of the β-catenin destruction complex that can both enhance and suppress canonical β-catenin signaling. Somatic mutations in WTX/AMER1 have been found in a proportion of the pediatric kidney cancer Wilms' tumor. By contrast, germline mutations cause the severe sclerosing bone dysplasia osteopathia striata congenita with cranial sclerosis (OSCS), a condition usually associated with fetal or perinatal lethality in male patients. Here we address the developmental and molecular function of WTX by generating two novel mouse alleles. W

Vitamin D deficiency in children with cerebral palsy: A narrative review of epidemiology, contributing factors, clinical consequences and interventions.

Sufficient vitamin D levels are necessary, not only for mineralization, normal growth and development of bones, but also for the prevention of fatal chronic diseases like diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome and cancer. This is of particular importance in children with neuro- and musculoskeletal disorders, especially cerebral palsy (CP). CP is a heterogeneous group of childhood developmental disability disorders described by uncharacteristic posture, balance, and movement. Patients with CP are at an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency and as a result reduced bone mineral density, bone frag

Tumor-like Lesions of Bone and Soft Tissues and Imaging Tips for Differential Diagnosis.

In the musculoskeletal system, tumor-like lesions may present similar imaging findings as bone and soft tissue tumors and can be defined as tumors on radiologic examinations. Misinterpretation of the imaging findings can lead to inappropriate clinical management of the patient. There is still some debate regarding the pathophysiology and origin of tumor-like lesions that include congenital, developmental, inflammatory, infectious, metabolic, reactive, posttraumatic, post-therapeutic changes, and some miscellaneous entities causing structural changes. Although tumor-like lesions are historically

A case of lethal congenital dwarfism with accelerated skeletal maturation.

Details of a female infant, who was born after 29 weeks gestation and who died within minutes of birth, are presented. The infant was hydropic, showed macroglossia and had very short limbs with normal sized hands and feet. Apart from a preductal aortic coarctation the pathological findings were confined to the skeleton. The radiographical and histological findings are described in detail; they differ from those of previous studies of similar conditions.

Extracorporal noninvasive acute retraction of STRYDE® for continued lengthening in cases with limited nail stroke: a technical less invasive solution to reload the STRYDE®.

With STRYDE® nails (NuVasive Specialized Orthopedics, San Diego, CA), lengthening nails for full weight-bearing during callus distraction have been available CE-certified since February 2019 in Europe. At present only antegrade femur nails and tibia nails with various lengths and diameters are available. Due to a mismatch of bone length and realizable (implantable) nail length e.g., in cases of skeletal dysplasia or achondroplastic dwarfism, it may happen that a desired lengthening of 6-8 cm cannot be realized because of a nail stroke from only 5 cm. Retrograde usage of antegrade piriformis na

The radiographic features of familial expansile osteolysis.

The radiographic features of a unique autosomal dominant bone dysplasia are presented. The features are classified as generalised and/or focal. Generalised features are either altered trabecular pattern or modelling abnormalities. Focal features comprise lytic areas which progressively enlarge, producing expansion of the bone and eventual disintegration due to fibrous and finally fatty replacement of the normal medulla. Almost 90% of these lesions occur in the appendicular skeleton. Clinically, hearing loss is the earliest manifestation of the disease, presenting sometimes as early as 4 years

Advantages of an additional subcranial approach in the correction of craniofacial deformities.

The subject of this paper are the advantages conferred by the subcranial and extracranial approach for the performance of fronto-orbital osteotomy and advancement. In contrast to the usual intracranial approach the resection of the ethmoidal and medial aspect of the orbital roof can be achieved by the subcranial and transethmoidal approach, thus avoiding any damage to the olfactory filaments. The resulting subcranial compartment, after radical resection of the ethmoidal cells, enables optimal visualization of the optic nerve and decompression from this access. Frontal lobe retraction is only n

[Sex-linked inheritance in fronto-metaphyseal dysplasia].

The author reports a family study of fronto-metaphyseal dysplasia in a 2 months-old child, in his mother and maternal grand-mother. The child is the more severely affected, while the mother and the grand-mother have less severe manifestations of the syndrome. This evidence permits to confirm the X-linked recessive inheritance of the disease, with severe manifestations in males and variable expression in female carriers.

[Multisynostotic osterodysgenesis and the problem of genetic counseling in newly-identified syndromes (author's transl)].

The authors report two female infants affected with a skeletal malformation syndrome, recently identified and probably genetic in nature, which includes as principal features a craniosynostosis with secondary midfacial hypoplasia and a characteristic facies. More specifically, the skeletal alterations include synostosis of the radius and humerus, congenital bowing of the femurs with fracturing during the neonatal period, and other minor anomalies of the thorax and extremities. The differential diagnosis includes serveral skeletal dysplasias such as the Campomelic syndrome, certain of the Acroc

[Achondrogenesis type I and II and hypochondrogenesis (author's transl)].

A study is made of achondrogenesis in relation to four observations of early fatal development. One case corresponds to type I (Parenti-Fraccaro); another to type II (Langer-Saldino); the final two, brothers, seem to come under the variation of hypochondrogenesis. In this study, authors stress the heterogenous nature of lethal, neonatal (short-limb) nanisms of which currently include: Type I and II achondrogenesis, hypochondrogenesis, homozygote achondroplasia, classical Torrance-type and San Diego-type thanatophoric dysplasia.

[Engelmann-Camurati's disease. Report of a clinical case and its evolution during 4 years].

Engelmann-Camurati's diseases is a progressive alteration of the diaphysis of the long bones, where the etiology is unknown. It appears clinically around the age of two years, showing weakness of the lower limbs and frequent falls; there is also weight loss and in older patients, the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics is retarded. The diagnosis is made clinically and corroborated with x-ray studies that show increased density and width of the diaphysis. We report a case in a female where the diagnosis was established at twelve years of age; she received steroid therapy for four yea

Mucopolysaccharidosis or Skeletal Dysplasia? Clinical and Radiologic Clues for Differential Diagnosis Based on Difficult Cases.

OBJECTIVE: The skeletal abnormalities of mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) and skeletal dysplasia (SD) may be similar and even indistinguishable. This study aims to elucidate clinical clues and overlapping features that may assist in the different diagnosis. METHODS: The clinical features of patients who were first referred to endocrinology or rheumatology department for short stature or joint abnormalities were addressed and signs were examined upon different diagnosis. RESULTS: Three patients (I, II and III) were diagnosed with SD with overlapping and also distinguishing skeletal features compar

Transmembrane protein 53 craniotubular dysplasia (OMIM # 619727): The skeletal disease and consequent blindness of this new disorder.

Craniotubular dysplasia, Ikegawa type (OMIM #619727) denotes the autosomal recessive skeletal disease identified in 2021 featuring blindness acquired in childhood. Five young members of four Indian families harbored a homozygous indel within TMEM53 (OMIM *619722), the gene that encodes transmembrane protein 53 (TMEM53). When intact, TMEM53 spans the nuclear envelope of osteoprogenitor cells, dampens BMP-SMAD signaling, and thereby slows bone formation. Consequently, defective TMEM53 accelerates osteogenesis. Herein, an American boy is compound heterozygous for a novel deletion and a novel miss

Management of Progressive Unilateral Tibia Vara in a 3-Year-Old Child with Focal Fibrocartilaginous Defect: A Case Report.

CASE: A 3-year-old boy with unilateral tibia vara was diagnosed with focal fibrocartilaginous dysplasia (FFCD) of the left proximal tibia. Because of progressive deformity with intercondylar distance of 9 cm and tibia metaphyseal-diaphyseal angle of 28°, the child was treated with curettage of the lesion and lateral proximal tibia hemiepiphysiodesis with 8 plates. The deformity was corrected within 12 months, the implant was removed, and the child is being followed up till skeletal maturity. CONCLUSION: Curettage of the lesion and guided growth with an 8-plate is a viable treatment method for

The transphyseal osteotomy for the slipped proximal tibial epiphysis in tibia vara.

This study aimed to describe a novel transphyseal osteotomy (TPO) for acute deformity correction in children with bilateral tibia vara and the atraumatic 'slipped proximal tibial epiphysis' (SPTE) entity. We described the clinical and radiological findings in five children (10 limbs) with tibia vara that were treated with the TPO. The criteria for the SPTE were met in nine (9/10) cases. The surgical technique and short-term results of the TPO are reported. The median age was 9 years (range, 6-9), with obesity (BMI > 95th centile) present in all children. The medial tibial plateau was not signi
