The surgical management of head and neck pathologies involving the maxilla and mandible results in significant functional and aesthetic deficits, and ultimately reduced quality of life. Composite free flaps used for reconstruction address many of these deficits and create a foundation for the use of osseointegrated implants to support prosthetic replacement of the dentition. There are few comparative studies examining outcomes of implants in native and reconstructed bone in head and neck cancer patients. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to compare survival rates and the effects o

BACKGROUND: A bone-anchored prosthesis (BAP) eliminates the need for a conventional socket by attaching a prosthesis directly to the user's skeleton. Currently, limited research addresses changes in gait mechanics post BAP implantation.
OBJECTIVE: Examine changes in frontal plane movement patterns after BAP implantation.
METHODS: Participants were individuals with unilateral transfemoral amputation (TFA) enrolled in the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Early Feasibility Study examining the Percutaneous Osseointegrated Prosthesis (POP). The participants completed overground gait assessme…

For some individuals with severe socket-related problems, prosthesis osseointegration directly connects a prosthesis to the residual limb creating a bone-anchored limb (BAL). We compared dynamic gait stability and between-limb stability symmetry, as measured by the Margin of Stability (MoS) and the Normalized Symmetry Index (NSI), for people with unilateral transfemoral amputation before and one-year after BAL implantation. The MoS provides a mechanical construct to assess dynamic gait stability and infer center of mass and limb control by relating the center of mass and velocity to the base o

People with unilateral transfemoral amputation using socket prostheses are at increased risk for developing osteoarthritis in both the residual hip and intact lower-limb joints. Osseointegrated prostheses are a surgical alternative to socket prostheses that directly attach to the residual femur via a bone-anchored implant, however their multi-joint loading effect is largely unknown. Our objective was to establish how osseointegrated prostheses influence joint loading during walking. Motion capture data (kinematics, ground reaction forces) were collected from 12 participants at baseline, with s

BACKGROUND: In patients with a transfemoral amputation socket-related problems are associated with reduced prosthetic use, activity, and quality of life. Furthermore, gait asymmetries are present that may explain secondary complaints. Bone-anchored prostheses (BAPs) may help these patients. Two types of BAP are available, screw and press-fit implants. Rehabilitation following surgery for a press-fit BAP is poorly described.
PURPOSE: To describe a rehabilitation program designed to minimize compensation strategies and increase activity using a case-report of an active, 70-year-old man with a t

INTRODUCTION: To date, only a few studies have compared radial head prostheses (RHP) and their different anchoring principles. The aim of this study was to characterize concomitant injuries, necessary adjuvant procedures, complications, and radiological findings after implantation of two different types of RHP.
METHODS: Sixty-six patients with radial head fractures were treated with MoPyC (Tornier/France, 50 mm stem, monopolar) or SBI rHead prostheses (Small Bone Innovations/USA, 22-mm stem, bipolar) and followed up over 42 months (16-64 months). Primary objective was the detection of differe

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous bone anchored hearing systems have been used effectively for over forty years with low rates of complications. Minimally Invasive Ponto Surgery (MIPS) is a surgical technique performed through a puncture hole that has been reported to minimize soft tissue trauma and decrease operative time. Due to it being a relatively new procedure there remains a paucity of pediatric outcomes data.
METHODS: Pediatric patients from two tertiary pediatric otolaryngology centers between 2016 and 2019 who underwent MIPS were included in this study. Charts were retrospectively reviewed f

We report our experience using a novel minimally invasive surgical technique for implantation of a fully implantable active bone conduction implant. This was a retrospective review of 16 adults, including 10 women and 6 men. The mean age was 54 years. Hearing loss profiles included 8 with mixed hearing loss, 5 with conductive hearing loss, and 3 with single-sided deafness. Nine patients underwent placement through the standard approach and 7 with the minimally invasive approach. There were no postoperative complications at a mean follow-up of 6.5 months (SD, 4; range, 1.5-12), and all patients

Bone-anchored limbs (BALs) are a transformative alternative for patients with lower-limb amputation who suffer from debilitating socket problems by eliminating the need for skin-to-prosthetic contact. Despite its successes, some individuals continue to face challenges with BALs, experiencing a loss of implant integration resulting in prosthetic loosening. A thorough understanding of biomechanical behavior at the residual limb and bone-implant interface is necessary to fully understand mechanical failure mechanisms. In addition, a deeper understanding of BAL biomechanical behavior would allow c

BACKGROUND: The bone-anchored hearing aid implantation technique is associated with post-operative skin reactions, which require conservative therapy and, in some cases, replacement of the abutment. Z-plasty is a technique that allows resection of the granulation tissue, thus ensuring that disease-free skin will be in contact with the abutment.
CASE REPORT: Use of the Z-plasty technique for resection of the peri-abutment granulation tissue is described. In the case presented herein, the episodes of skin reaction became very frequent and the patient was unable to use his bone-anchored hearing

Recently, hybrid glenoid components have been developed, consisting of cementless highly porous metal central peg, monoblock keel or cage along with cemented backside polyethylene surface. The aims of this study were twofold: (1) to determine the revision and complication rates of hybrid glenoid components, consisting of porous metal pegs or coatings attached to the polyethylene, for aseptic loosening in TSA and (2) to evaluate the rate of radiolucent lines in patients who underwent TSA with hybrid glenoid components consisting of porous metal pegs or coatings attached to the polyethylene. BACKGROUND: Endoprosthetic reconstruction after oncologic resection of bone tumors requires stable fixation between the prosthesis and residual host bone. Compressive osseointegration has been developed as an alternative to traditional stemmed implants to address the challenges and complications of achieving this fixation. Sufficient time has now passed from the advent of compressive implants to allow for an assessment of the intermediate-term and long-term results of this form of fixation.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: At a minimum follow-up of 10 years after implantation of a compressive osseointegra

BACKGROUND: Transfemoral and transhumeral amputees rely on socket prosthetics, which are susceptible to difficulties with fit, skin integrity, pain, and biomechanical disadvantage, ultimately decreasing prosthetic limb utilization. Osseointegrated percutaneous prosthetic systems may help eliminate these challenges. However, no study has identified the estimated number of patients who may be candidates for osseointegrated prosthetics.
OBJECTIVES: To indentify the estimated number of patients who may be candidates for osseointegrated prosthetics using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) Databas

UNLABELLED: Press-fit transfemoral osseointegration is the technique of inserting an intramedullary metal implant into the residual femur of an amputee; the implant is passed transcutaneously to attach to a standard prosthesis that includes a knee, tibia, ankle, and foot. This allows the prosthesis to be skeletally anchored, eliminating socket-related problems such as tissue compression that can provoke neurogenic pain, skin abrasion, and fitting problems resulting from residual limb size fluctuation1. Amputees with osseointegrated prostheses typically wear their prosthesis more and experience
