Alcohol and the Brain.

Alcohol works on the brain to produce its desired effects, e.g., sociability and intoxication, and hence the brain is an important organ for exploring subsequent harms. These come in many different forms such as the consequences of damage during intoxication, e.g., from falls and fights, damage from withdrawal, damage from the toxicity of alcohol and its metabolites and altered brain structure and function with implications for behavioral processes such as craving and addiction. On top of that are peripheral factors that compound brain damage such as poor diet, vitamin deficiencies leading to …

Build-a-brain.

A major barrier in understanding nervous system development is modeling the cellular interactions that form the human brain. Recently, in the journal Nature, Lancaster et al. (2013) established a protocol for culturing pluripotent stem cell (PSC)-derived "cerebral organoids" that mimics the developing human brain's cellular organization, segregates into distinct brain regions, and models microcephaly.

TRPs in the Brain.

The Transient receptor potential (TRP) family of cation channels is a large protein family, which is mainly structurally uniform. Proteins c … vailable on their role in the central nervous system. TRP channels are involved in neurogenesis and brain development, synaptic transmission and they play a key role in the development of several neurological diseases.

Trypanosomiasis and the brain.

Neurological involvement following trypanosome infection has been recognised for over a century. However, there are still many unanswered qu … t accompany trypanosome infection and disease progression. The effects of trypanosomes on the blood-brain barrier are discussed and possible key molecules in parasite penetration of the barrier highlighted. Changes in the balance of CNS cytokines and chemokines are also described. The article closes by summarising the effects of trypanosome infection on …

Cannabis and the brain.

The active compound in herbal cannabis, Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol, exerts all of its known central effects through the CB(1) cannabinoid receptor. Research on cannabinoid mechanisms has been facilitated by the availability of selective antagonists acting at CB(1) receptors and the generation of CB(1) receptor knockout mice. Particularly important classes of neurons that express high levels of CB(1) receptors are GABAergic interneurons in hippocampus, amygdala and cerebral cortex, which also contain the neuropeptides cholecystokinin. Activation of CB(1) receptors leads to inhibition of the

What is the brain?

From a structural perspective, there are ten basic parts of the vertebrate CNS that are almost universally agreed upon. These parts have been grouped in at least five different ways corresponding to five different theories about its basic plan or architecture. Two classical models that remain popular today are derived from (1) comparative anatomy and the body's segmental organization, and (2) comparative embryology and the neural tube's transverse and longitudinal organization. A new approach is concerned with deciphering the genetic program that assembles the nervous system during embryogenes

Actinomycosis of the brain.

Actinomyces species are rare but treatable causes of central nervous system infection. A case of actinomycotic cerebral abscess is reported. The primary source of infection was probably the lung based on radiological findings although culture of the bronchial brushings was negative. The patient had surgical excision and repeated drainage with two prolonged causes of antibiotic therapy. At follow-up examination 36 months later, the patient was well except for a residual left hemiplegia. Diagnosis of cerebral actinomycosis can be made by anaerobic culture of the appropriate specimens or on histo

Cavernomas of the brain.

Our clinical and surgical experience with 16 cases of cavernous hemangioma (cavernoma) of the brain is presented. In 50% of the cases, symptoms appeared during the 3rd decade of life. The clinical picture included seizures in 50% of the cases and a brain tumor-like syndrome in 37.5%, and 12.5% of the cases began with an intracerebral hemorrhage. In our series females predominated over males by 2:1. Computed tomographic (CT) scanning is the best procedure for the diagnosis of cavernomas. However, exact preoperative diagnosis of these lesions is infrequent because cavernomas are generally accept…

The 'bright brain'.

In this preliminary study we report on a new neonatal cerebral ultrasound appearance consisting of high amplitude echoes that arise diffusely throughout the brain and obscure the echoes of normal structures. This scan appearance was associated with probable cerebral insult and we believe that it is caused by cerebral oedema.
