We report on an exceedingly rare lesion of the thyroid probably of a branchial cleft origin, which was not published in the world literature before. A 58-year-old woman underwent a total thyroidectomy for bilateral goiter. Grossly, there was one yellowish nodule sized 15 mm in the largest dimension found in the right lobe. Microscopically, the thyroid parenchyma showed signs of Hashimoto thyroiditis. The nodule in the right lobe was composed of a part of solid cell nests appearance, another part resembling a branchial cleft cyst, and a part resembling Warthin tumor. This lesion may belong to t

Branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome is characterized by ear malformations, cervical fistulas, hearing loss, and renal anomalies. It is an autosomal dominant disorder with variable clinical manifestations. The most common features of BOR syndrome are branchial, hearing, and renal anomalies. However, many affected subjects have been observed with branchial-cleft anomalies and hearing loss but without renal anomalies, a condition called "branchio-otic" (BO) syndrome. It is logical to question whether the BOR and BO syndromes are allelic or whether they represent distinct genetic entities. We identi

Six patients with Baker's cysts, 3 with branchial cleft cysts, and 2 with thyroglossal duct cysts were treated with percutaneous aspiration and absolute ethanol sclerotherapy using a 7-French pigtail catheter. Cystography was performed before ethanol injection to confirm that there was no extravasation and that it was a monocystic lesion. One recurrence of a Baker's cyst was revealed in follow-up examinations, which ranged from 11 months to 36 months (mean, 25 months). The major complication of hypoesthesia of the popliteal region was observed in 1 patient treated for Baker's cyst. The results

Various congenital cervical anomalies are found in the neck region including defects of the branchial apparatus (branchial, thymic and parathyroid anomalies) and vascular anomalies. They manifest as cystic masses, sinuses, fistulas and as ectopic glands. This multicentric retrospective imaging study done in 5 different radiological centers (4 adult radiological departments and 1 pediatric radiological department) shows the result in understanding the congenital cervical anomalies and include 63 patients. The age of the patients varied between 24 days-81 years with a mean age of 23 years. This

Second branchial cleft cyst and lymphoma are two common types of neck masses. The etiology, clinical manifestations, imaging findings, treatment options, and prognosis of these two entities differ. Clinically, the occurrence of both lesions at the same anatomical site is rare. Herein, we report a case of concurrent second branchial cleft cyst and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in the same anatomical region. The final diagnosis was confirmed by clinical features, ima-ging findings, and ultrasound-guided biopsy. The patient received the R-CHOP (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristin

Hox11 is the first member of a novel class of orphan homeobox genes. We report that Hox11 is expressed in a discrete temporal and spatially segmented pattern during embryonic development and appears critical for the specification of splenic cell fate. Expression is first observed in the developing muscle plates of branchial arches 1, 2, 3 and 4/6, and subsequently within motor neurons of cranial nerves V, VII, IX, and X, which innervate these muscles. Hox11 serves as a molecular maker distinguishing branchial from somatic motor nuclei. Additionally, Hox11 is expressed in the surface ectoderm o

Hydatid cyst disease is a parasitic infestation caused by Echinococcus granulosus. It is transmitted via oral ingestion of eggs excreted by dog's stool. Liver and lungs are the most commonly involved organs. Primary involvement of submandibular region by hydatid cyst is extremely rare. In this article, we report a case of a lesion excised from submandibular region with an initial diagnosis of branchial cleft cyst, but shown to be a hydatid cyst in histopathological evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Anomalies of the fourth arch are the rarest of all the branchial anomalies. They arise as a result of failure of involution of the cleft during embryogenesis, and manifest clinically as sinuses, cysts or abscesses in the neck, commonly presenting in childhood.
METHODS: This article describes a case of a neonate presenting with stridor which was secondary to a fourth branchial pouch sinus. The presentation, investigations, operative findings and treatment are discussed.
RESULTS: Microlaryngobronchoscopy was done to evaluate the stridor. A swelling in the posterolateral pharyngeal

Epidermal nevus syndrome (ENS) comprises a heterogeneous group of neurocutaneous syndromes associated with the presence of epidermal nevi and variable extracutaneous manifestations. Postzygotic activating HRAS pathogenic variants were previously identified in nevus sebaceous (NS), keratinocytic epidermal nevus (KEN), and different ENS, including Schimmelpenning-Feuerstein-Mims and cutaneous-skeletal-hypophosphatasia syndrome (CSHS). Skeletal involvement in HRAS-related ENS ranges from localized bone dysplasia in association with KEN to fractures and limb deformities in CSHS. We describe the fi

Cervical chondrocutaneous branchial remnants (CCBRs) are rare anomalies found in the neck. These remnants can be easily misdiagnosed due to their low incidence, and they are often associated with other anomalies. Previous studies have reported an association with other anomalies in up to 76% of cases. In this article, the authors present a case series of two patients with bilateral CCBRs and investigate the associated anomalies through a literature review. Patients diagnosed with CCBRs who presented with cervical masses were included. Records were reviewed to investigate factors such as sex, l

First branchial cleft anomalies (FBCAs) are the most infrequent malformations that occur during the development of the branchial apparatus, appearing in less than 8% of all branchial anomalies. Traditionally, they are classified into Work type I and II, depending on their origin. We present a pair of rare FBCAs: a case of a preauricular Work type I cyst with twin fistulae coursing toward the parotid gland and a Work type II cyst of significant dimensions.

The epibranchial organ (EO) is an enigmatic tubular organ found in the pharyngeal cavity of many filter-feeding fishes. We investigated whether it might function as a taste organ that mediates aggregation and ingestion of planktonic food within the buccal cavity. The EO and associated structures of bighead and silver carps, two successful and invasive planktivorous fishes, were examined using histological and electrophysiological techniques. Both species possess finely structured gill rakers that extend directly via a series of protrusions into each of the four blind canals which are organized

Branchial cleft anomalies--which include branchial cysts, sinuses, and fistulas--are uncommon developmental defects of the neck. Approximately 2 to 3% of cases are bilateral; bilateral presentations appear to have a familial component. Only 5 cases of bilateral branchial cleft fistulas have been reported in the English-language literature, and only 1 case of simultaneous first and second branchial cleft fistulas has been previously reported. We report what to the best of our knowledge is the second case of bilateral first and second branchial cleft fistulas.

Branchial anomalies are important lesions to consider in the differential diagnosis of head and neck masses in children. These anomalies are composed of a heterogeneous group of congenital malformations that arise from incomplete obliteration of pharyngeal clefts and pouches during embryogenesis. Although present at birth, many abnormalities do not become evident until later in infancy or childhood. It is common for branchial anomalies to become infected, causing significant morbidity. Surgical removal may be difficult, and inadequate resection of the lesion is likely to cause recurrence. Unde
