Eccrine spiradenoma arising in the breast misdiagnosed as an epidermal inclusion cyst.

Eccrine spiradenomas are rare, benign, cutaneous tumors that originate in the sweat glands. Eccrine spiradenomas in the breast are very rare and only a few cases have been reported. We report here on the case of a 47-year-old woman with superficial masses in the breast and these masses had gradually increased in size during follow-up. They were confirmed to be an eccrine spiradenoma on pathologic examination. There have been a few reports about the radiologic findings of eccrine spiradenomas of the breast. This is the first case of an eccrine spiradenoma in the breast that was characterized by

Complicated breast cysts on sonography: is aspiration necessary to exclude malignancy?

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of breast cancer in women presenting for fine needle aspiration of sonographically diagnosed complicated breast cysts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Institutional review board approval was obtained. A retrospective study was performed of 186 consecutive women who presented for fine needle aspiration of 243 sonographic complicated cysts detected by clinical examination or imaging between January 2002 and August 2003. Sonographic complicated cysts were defined as those meeting most but not all criteria for simple cysts similar to current Breast Imag…

A case of intracystic papillary carcinoma with a multilocular cyst of the breast in male.

Intracystic papillary carcinoma of the breast in males is a very rare disease but has an excellent prognosis. We report the case of a 68-year-old man who had a right subareolar soft mass. Imaging examinations showed a multilocular cyst with an intracystic component, and benign disease was diagnosed. Fine needle aspiration of the cyst fluid revealed many malignant cells, and modified radical mastectomy was performed under general anesthesia. Histological examination showed intracystic papillary carcinoma with a multilocular cyst. No positive lymph nodes were involved. The diagnosis of intracyst

A case control study of factors associated with macroscopic breast cysts.

Women who have a breast cyst aspirated are at increased risk of developing breast cancer. We present an age-matched case control study comparing the reproductive characteristics of 352 women who had a breast cyst aspirated with a control group of 352 contemporaneous clinically normal women. Women with breast cysts were more likely to be nulliparous [odds ratio (OR) = 2.28, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.34-3.88] or have a late age at first live birth (chi 2 trend = 5.6, P less than 0.025), and a late menopause (chi 2 trend = 4.3, P less than 0.05). They were less likely to have ever used the…

Prostate-specific antigen in breast cyst fluid: possible role of prostate-specific antigen in hormone-dependent breast cancer.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a 33 kDa serine protease which is produced by many different tissues in the body and has been shown to be present in low concentrations in breast milk and in about 30% of breast cancers. The presence of PSA in breast cancers is associated with the presence of steroid-hormone receptors and may be a favourable prognostic indicator. In this study, PSA immunoreactivity was measured in breast cyst fluid obtained from women with palpable breast cysts which is the most common benign breast disease. PSA was found to be present in very low concentrations in breast cys…

Orbitotemporal Bone Cyst of Metastatic Breast Cancer: Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic breast cancer in the bone rarely has a cystic appearance, and while it is common in the orbit, its metastasis to the orbitotemporal skull is rare. Consequently, it is difficult to diagnose it. We report and discuss a rare case of metastatic breast cancer with simple cyst appearance in the orbitotemporal region of the skull. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 63-year-old woman presented with mild double vision only on left gaze that lasted for 2 months. Ten and a half years ago, the patient underwent surgery for tumor resection of a stage 3 breast adenocarcinoma, followed by radiothera

Breast cyst fluid plasmin activity and its effect on TGF-beta2 activation.

There are two types of breast cyst and women with apocrine breast cyst may have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than cyst lined by flattened epithelium. Transforming growth factor-beta's growth inhibitory effect on epithelial cells suggests a potential protective role in breast cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of plasmin in both breast cyst groups and the possible role of plasmin on transforming growth factor beta activation. Presence of high plasmin level may indicate its importance on activation process, but some other proteases may also involve in this…

Epidermal cyst of the breast mimicking malignancy: clinical, radiological, and histological correlation.

BACKGROUND: Epidermal cyst of the breast is a rare benign intramammary lesion; however, a common finding in other parts of the body and most often located in the scalp, back, and neck. Only a few cases of epidermal cysts of the breast have been reported in literature. CASE REPORT: The patient presented with a small movable left breast lump. Mammography and ultrasonography did not show features of a benign lesion. Ultrasound-guided core biopsy was undertaken. Histology showed an epidermal cyst. The patient returned with an inflammation at the puncture site and a small abscess seen on ultrasoun

[Hormonal and biochemical characterization of breast cyst fluid in gross cystic mastopathy].

A total of 93 breast cyst fluids (BCF) obtained by needle aspiration of women suffering from gross cystic mastopathy was hormonally investigated. The mean age of the patients was 45 years (range 27-65). Estradiol (E2), progesterone (PROG), testosterone (TE), prolactin (PROL), estriol (E3), dehydroisoandrosterone and its sulfate (DHA, DHA-S) levels were investigated in the BCF and in the respective sera. Tumour marker beta-HCG and CA 15-3 as well as cations (K+, Na+) were determined, too. E2, E3, PROG, TE, PROL, DHA, DHA-S and K+ showed significant accumulation in the BCF compared to the serum …

Bile acids in human breast cyst fluid: the identification of lithocholic acid.

Breast cyst fluid (BCF) aspirated from 12 women with fibrocystic disease of the breast and sera obtained simultaneously were analyzed for bile acids. Analysis was performed by gas-liquid chromatography of the acetoxy methyl esters of the bile acids prepared after alkaline hydrolysis of the bile salts. An internal standard served to correct for methodological losses. Low levels of bile acids were found in serum samples, precluding overt hepatobiliary complications. Deoxycholic acid (17-160 mumol/L), chenodeoxycholic acid (18-305 mumol/L), and cholic acid (3-119 mumol/L) were detected in 11 of 1…

Urokinase and tissue-type plasminogen activators are present in breast cyst fluids.

Breast cyst fluids obtained by needle aspiration from 20 patients were analysed for the presence of urokinase-like (u-PA) and tissue-type (t-PA) plasminogen activators. Plasminogen, the natural substrate for these PAs, was also measured. u-PA activity was detected in 18 samples (mean +/- S.D. = 1.11 +/- 1.08 IU ml-1) and t-PA activity in 16 samples (0.35 +/- 0.28 IU ml-1). Plasminogen was detected in 10 samples (mean = 37 micrograms ml-1), range 28-85 micrograms ml-1) and was below the assay detection limit in the other samples. While both u-PA and t-PA specific activities were greater in the …

EGF in breast cyst fluid: relationships with intracystic androgens, estradiol and progesterone.

The relationship between intracystic levels of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and those of dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S), delta-4-androstenedione (delta-4-A), 17-beta-estradiol (17-beta-E) and progesterone (PROG) have been studied in 77 breast cyst fluid (BCF) samples. EGF and all tested hormones appeared to be inversely correlated with the intracystic Na+/K+ ratio (p less than 0.001). Consequently, when the BCFs were subdivided according to the Na+/K+ ratio, significantly higher levels of EGF, DHEA-S, delta-4-A, 17-beta-E and PROG were found in Na+/K+ less than 3 BCFs compared with …

Accessory Breast Carcinoma Masquerading as a Sebaceous Cyst in a Breast Cancer Survivor: A Diagnostic Pitfall in Axillary Assessment.

Accessory breast carcinoma is an uncommon malignancy and is often diagnosed late because it could mimic a benign axillary lesion. We report the case of a 63-year-old woman with a prior history of left breast cancer treated with breast-conserving surgery and radiotherapy who later developed a palpable right axillary lump. The lesion had initially been assessed clinically as a sebaceous cyst and was not definitively investigated for 23 months. During routine breast surveillance, mammography and targeted ultrasound revealed a new suspicious lesion arising within accessory axillary breast tissue,
