Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) may rarely cause some interesting and unusual complications. Although infection is a common complication of BCs, there are only two patients with BC infected with mycobacterium in English literature. Two intraparenchymal BCs infected with mycobacterium are presented here as unusual complications. Cystectomy was performed for the cysts. They were given antituberculosis treatment. No complication or recurrences were detected in follow up period.

Previous TBC lesions, diabetes and use of corticosteroids are recognised as risk factors for developing long-standing disease caused by Schizophyllum commune. In the case report presented in this work, S. commune was isolated from an inflamed bronchogenous cyst of previously immunocompetent patient. The isolated mould failed to sporulate and identification was achieved by nucleotide sequencing.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the preoperative and operative presentations of one paediatric and 30 adult patients with bronchogenic cyst of the mediastinum (n = 11) and lung (n = 20). At initial presentation, six patients were asymptomatic and 25 were symptomatic. The mean age of asymptomatic and symptomatic patients was 25 and 33 yrs, respectively. Six patients presented with complications, including superior vena cava syndrome, tracheal compression, pneumothorax, pleurisy and pneumonia. Two patients who were asymptomatic when initially observed eventually needed surgery because of t…

Bronchogenic cyst of the mediastinum, a cause of stridor in the neonate, is one of a group of congenital lesions of the mediastinum that results from abnormal budding of the ventral segment of the primitive foregut. A review of our treatment of 15 patients over 10 years at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center is highlighted by a case report of a newborn with stridor and severe respiratory distress caused by a mediastinal bronchogenic cyst. We assess the literature on these rare but life-threatening lesions, and discuss the embryology, diagnostic work-up, and treatment, emphasizing the roles of…

BACKGROUND Bronchogenic cysts are a rare congenital malformation of primitive foregut development, predominantly located in the thorax. However, they can also be found in various atypical locations, including the retroperitoneal space. Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts are exceedingly rare. The diagnosis of retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts presents considerable difficulty owing to their rarity and the absence of distinctive clinical and imaging characteristics. CASE REPORT This study reports 6 surgically confirmed cases of retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts at our institution. One patient p…

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cysts are congenital cystic anomalies of the bronchus that originate from abnormal development of the bronchial tree during the embryonic period. Their common manifestation is a space-occupying lesion in the lungs or mediastinum. Common imaging modalities for detecting bronchogenic cysts include chest X-ray and chest computed tomography (CT) scans.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old female presented with an abnormal space-occupying lesion in the mediastinum detected through imaging examinations. Echocardiography revealed a cystic mass located between the descending aort…

BACKGROUND: Gastric bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are extremely rare cystic masses caused by abnormal development of the respiratory system during the embryonic period. Gastric bronchial cysts are rare lesions first reported in 1956; as of 2019, only 37 cases are available in the MEDLINE/PubMed online databases. BCs usually have no clinical symptoms in the early stage, and their imaging findings also lack specificity. Therefore, they are difficult to diagnose before histopathological examination.
CASE SUMMARY: A 55-year-old woman presented at our hospital with intermittent epigastric pain. She had…

Bronchogenic cysts are rare benign lesions that arise during embryogenesis of the primitive proximal intestine and are located primarily in the lung. They are lined with cuboid or columnar pseudostratified and ciliated epithelium and have elastic fibers, smooth muscle, bronchial glands and cartilage in their walls. Gastric bronchogenic cysts are extremely rare with very few reported cases. Symptoms are usually caused by compression. GIST is the main differential diagnosis and the treatment is surgical resection.

Osteochondroma is a benign bone tumor composed of a bony protrusion with an overlying cartilage cap. Osteochondromas arise in the scapula in 3% to 5% of cases, making them the most common benign bone tumor in this location. Scapular osteochondromas cause various pathologies of the shoulder girdle, including snapping scapula syndrome, chest wall deformity, shoulder impingement, and bursa formation. Bronchogenic cyst is an exceedingly rare finding in the periscapular area. It is a congenital cystic mass lined by tracheobronchial structures and respiratory epithelium. To our knowledge, there are …

We present the case of a female neonate with expiratory stridor that was caused by a bronchogenic cyst that led to tracheobronchomalacia. Rigid endoscopy revealed that a severe anterior compression of the tracheobronchial tree had caused tracheomalacia and right bronchomalacia. Computed tomography of the chest with intravenous contrast demonstrated the presence of a mediastinal mass anterior to the trachea and bronchus. Following a complete excision via a median sternotomy, histopathologic examination identified the mass as a bronchogenic cyst with respiratory epithelial lining and cartilage e…

A few cases of major complications after surgery for bronchogenic cyst have been reported. The purpose of this study was to analyze the complicated and unusual cases among 30 consecutive patients with bronchogenic cysts treated surgically at our institution between 1975 and 2007. There were 3 cases of mediastinal bronchogenic cyst characterized by significant surgical complications or very unusual pathological findings. The operations were performed through a thoracotomy in 25 patients, and by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in 5. Two patients suffered iatrogenic injury of the contralater…

Bronchogenic cysts occur most frequently in the middle mediastinum; almost all the remainder is present in the lungs. In this report, we describe 2 cases of bronchogenic cysts, which arose from the parietal and visceral pleura. Pathologically, each cyst showed an attachment with a small stalk to the parietal or visceral pleura. We suggest that bronchogenic cyst should be included in the differential diagnosis of cystic lesions in the pleural cavity.

In a 73-year-old male patient with a history of prostate cancer, a right ventricular endoluminal tumor was diagnosed by echocardiography. An endocardial papillary fibroelastoma or myxoma appeared possible; a malignant tumor could not be ruled out. The tumor was resected using extracorporeal circulation and cardioplegic arrest. Histopathology study revealed a bronchogenic cyst with ciliated epithelium.

Bronchogenic cysts occur as a result of a developmental fault during the division and budding of the tracheobronchial tree in the embryonic period. They are usually located in the mediastinum and intrapulmonary regions. They may cause serious respiratory distress in childhood; they present less commonly in adults and often present with a variety of symptoms, including recurrent infections. We report the case of an adult female patient who presented with recurrent pulmonary infections and swelling of the neck because of a bronchogenic cyst that was unusually located in the cervical region.

OBJECTIVE: All cases of bronchogenic cysts treated in our center are analysed in order to define its clinical and pathological features. These data are used to determine whether surgical treatment in all cases is justified or whether there is a place for conservative treatment.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied the medical records and pathology reports of all patients with bronchogenic cysts (n = 20) referred to our clinic between 1975 and 1993.
RESULTS: Fourteen patients (70%) were asymptomatic. Six patients had symptoms because of cyst-related complications (infection or compression). In…
