Intestinal capillariasis.

What started out as an isolated report of an unknown intestinal parasitic disease has emerged as another disease of worldwide significance. Capillaria philippinensis was found in the intestines of a Filipino who suffered from an intractable diarrhoea and died in 1963. A few years later epidemics of intestinal cappillariasis erupted and spread to many parts of the Philippines. Thailand was also found to be endemic for the disease and in recent years, a few case reports have come from Japan, Iran and Egypt too. Since small freshwater and brackish water fish are considered to be the natural inter…

Endoparasites of red fox (Vulpes vulpes) in central Italy.

A parasitologic study on 129 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from Tuscany (central Italy) was carried out in 2004-2006. Five intestinal species were found at necropsy: Dipylidium caninum (prevalence 57.3%), Mesocestoides lineatus (45.4%), Uncinaria stenocephala (39.1%), Toxocara canis (9.1%), and Toxascaris leonina (5.4%). Other parasites not associated with the intestine included Crenosoma vulpis (14.7%), Capillaria aerophila (7.0%), Angiostrongylus vasorum (7.0%), and filarial parasites (17.8%). Coprologic tests were less sensitive and less specific in identifying parasites than direct examination…

Helminth parasitisms among intermingling insular populations of white-tailed deer, feral cattle, and feral swine.

Helminth infections among free-ranging, intermingling populations of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), cattle (Bos taurus), and swine (Sus scrofa) on an island off the Georgia coast were studied. Of 39 species of helminths collected, 19 were found in deer, 17 in cattle, and 13 in swine. Of 28 species of helminths recovered from ruminants, 8, viz, Capillaria bovis, Cooperia punctata, Dictyocaulus viviparus, Gongylonema pulchrum, G verrucosum, Haemonchus contortus, Moniezia benedeni, and Trichostrongylus axei, occurred in both deer and cattle. Common liver flukes (Fasciola hepatica) in…

Endoparasites in carnivores in Swiss zoological institutions between 2009 and 2024: evaluation of risk factors and deworming strategies.

Parasitic infections in zoo carnivores pose risks to animal health and zoonotic transmission. Over a 15-year period, endoparasites were dete … %) of the samples tested positive. The most frequent parasites were ascarids (n = 73), followed by Capillaria spp. (n = 66), Cystoisospora spp. (n = 50) and Cryptosporidium (n = 43). Most animals were asymptomatic. Among the animals with clinical observations available, diarrhoea was recorded in ten, respiratory signs in two and reduced body condition in fo …

A Taq-Man-based multiplex quantitative PCR for the simultaneous detection and quantification of Angiostrongylus vasorum, Crenosoma vulpis, and species of respiratory capillarids in canids.

In recent years, Angiostrongylus vasorum, Crenosoma vulpis, Eucoleus aerophilus (syn. Capillaria aerophila) and Eucoleus boehmi (syn. Capillaria boehmi), commonly referred to as canine lungworms, have gained a growing interest worldwide as the result of their geographical expansion. Each of these nematode species differs considerably in its biology and pathogenicity. Despite their impact on dogs' health, these parasites are often underdiagnosed owing to diagnostic challenges. Here, we describe the development and validation of a Taq-Man-based multiplex quantitative PCR (qPCR) for the simultane…

Dynamics of endoparasites in farmed fallow deer (Dama dama) from birth to puberty.

Rectal faecal samples from farmed fallow deer were examined for eggs, larvae and oocysts of gastro-intestinal and pulmonary parasites from July 1992, then the fawns were 6 weeks old, to September 1993 in four weekly intervals. The investigations showed a succession of species: Trichuris spp., Nematodirus roscidus and Capillaria bovis had their peaks in egg output in August 1992, September 1992 and February 1993, respectively. After reaching peaks the faecal output of Trichuris spp. and Nematodirus roscidus eggs showed a marked decline. The shedding of Dictyocaulus larvae had its highest peak i…

Capillariasis philippinensis: a fish-borne parasitic zoonosis.

Fish from lagoons in Northern Luzon, Philippines, have been shown experimentally to be intermediate hosts of Capillaria philippinensis. Eggs ingested by the fish hatch in the intestines and the larvae double in size in 3 weeks. When fed to monkeys, Mongolian gerbils and birds, the larvae develop into adults and reproduce. Fish from the lagoons or purchased from the market were fed to gerbils and the animals developed patent infections, demonstrating natural transmission of the parasite. Philippine and Thailand populations have the habit of eating uncooked freshwater and brackish water fish and…

Hepatic capillariasis in muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus).

We present the first prevalence data of hepatic capillariasis in muskrats in Pennsylvania and Connecticut (USA). The prevalence of hepatic capillariasis in five groups of muskrats coming from different locations and numbering 81, 229, 11, 19, and 20 animals, was 42%, 78%, 36%, 16%, and 0%, respectively. Liver lesions varied from minimal to severe multifocal granulomatous hepatitis, often containing adult worms or eggs.

Intestinal capillariasis diagnosed by endoscopic biopsy.

Many new parasitic infections have emerged in Korea, with >35 new species appearing since the 1980s. Among them, Capillaria species are unique for contributing to morbidity in many countries as well as in Korea. Since the first reported case of a 41-year-old male patient diagnosed with intestinal capillariasis in 1991, a total of six cases have been reported thus far. In this case report, we present another imported case of intestinal capillariasis in Korea, in which a 42-year-old male patient presented with intractable diarrhea and weight loss. The diagnosis was confirmed by biopsy of the ile…

On the presence of hepatic stellate cells in portal spaces.

Previous studies in mice with hypervitaminosis A have demonstrated that fat-storing cells (hepatic stellate cells-HSCs) participate in schistosomal granuloma fibrogenesis. The origin of such cells in portal areas, away from the Disse spaces, was herein investigated. HSCs were identified in frozen sections of the liver by means of Sudan III staining. They appeared as red-stained cells disposed along the sinusoids of normal mice, but were never found within portal spaces. However, in the chronically inflamed portal spaces of Capillaria hepatica-infected mice, Sudan III-positive cells were freque…

[Studies On Sarles' Phenomenon Of The Excysted Larvae Of Clonorchis Sinensis].

The occurrence of Sarles' phenomenon (Cerkarien Hullen Reaktion) are proved in the excysted metacercariae of Clonorchis sinensis which were incubated in the sera from rabbits given a varying number of metacercariae of C. sinensis per orally. The precipitates were formed around the oral sucker and excretory bladder of the excysted larvae. Sarles' phenomenon began to be positive from the 2nd to 3rd week after infection. In the excysted larvae of C. sinensis precipitates were not produced in the sera of rabbits infected with Metagonimus yokogawai and Capillaria hepatica. The number of eggs in the…

Hepatic capillariasis in a Cape ground squirrel (Xerus inaurus).

We report, for the first time, an incidental finding of Calodium hepaticum infestation in a sub-adult female Cape ground squirrel (Xerus inaurus). Post mortem examination of the squirrel revealed severe haemoperitoneum, splenomegaly and hepatomegaly with miliary white spots distributed diffusely throughout the hepatic parenchyma. Histologically the portal tracts in the liver showed granulomatous inflammation with fibrosis and numerous giant cells. Occasional adult worms were identified and there were multiple C. hepaticum eggs distributed diffusely throughout the portal tracts and the parenchy
