Filtration coefficient and osmotic reflection coefficient to albumin in rabbit submandibular gland capillaries.

1. The isolated perfused submandibular salivary gland of the rabbit has been used in order to make estimates of the filtration coefficient ( … The high hydraulic conductivity, combined with sieving properties comparable to those in continuous capillaries, is consistent with other data on fenestrated capillaries. 5. Finally, it was observed that, while the Kf value calculated from the initial flux rate was similar whether measured during fluid efflux from or influx into the microvasculature, on retur …

Fenestrated capillaries in the periodontal ligaments of the erupting and erupted rat molar.

Quantitative ultrastructural studies were conducted on eight rats (four aged 21 days and four aged 8 weeks) using the periodontal tissues around the mesial root of the mandibular first molar. The periodontal ligament of the erupting tooth contained significantly more capillary fenestrations than the erupted tooth, both in terms of the number per unit area of endothelium (2.2/microns2) and in terms of total number per cubic millimetre of tissue (30.5 X 10(6)/mm3). Differences were also discerned with respect to the percentage of capillaries in the tissue. Thus, the periodontal vasculature demon…

PCO2 measurements in surface proximal tubules and peritubular capillaries of the rat kidney.

PCO2 was measured in surface proximal tubules and peritubular capillaries in the rat under normal acid-base conditions and in three settings with decreased HCO3(-) reabsorption: benzolamide administration, respiratory alkalosis, and metabolic acidosis. Under normal conditions, PCO2 in the early proximal tubule (EP) was 10.5 mmHg higher than PaCO2 (P less than 0.001) and 3-4 mmHg higher than late proximal (LP) and peritubular capillary (PC) PCO2 (P less than 0.001). PCO2 in LP and PC was 7 mmHg higher than PaCO2 (P less than 0.001). Benzolamide (3 mg/kg) had no effect on the difference between …

The effect of photochemotherapy on epidermal-glycogen and on capillaries in psoriatic skin.

This study was undertaken to assess the amount of glycogen present in psoriasis vulgaris (PV), psoriasis erythrodermica (PE) and psoriasis pustulosa generalisata (PPG) lesions before and after photochemotherapy (PUVA). There were more deposits of glycogen in PPG than in PE and PV. With PUVA treatment, glycogen almost completely disappeared in PV and PE, but traces were still observed in PPG. After treatment, the epidermal layers returned to their normal structure but there was no significant improvement in the dilated and tortuous capillaries in the upper corium.

Blood flow, capillary transit times, and tissue oxygenation: the centennial of capillary recruitment.

The transport of oxygen between blood and tissue is limited by blood's capillary transit time, understood as the time available for diffusion exchange before blood returns to the heart. If all capillaries contribute equally to tissue oxygenation at all times, this physical limitation would render vasodilation and increased blood flow insufficient means to meet increased metabolic demands in the heart, muscle, and other organs. In 1920, Danish physiologist August Krogh was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his mathematical and quantitative, experimental demonstration of a so…

Correlation of severity of chronic venous disease with capillary morphology assessed by capillary microscopy.

BACKGROUND: In patients with lipodermatosclerosis caused by chronic venous disease of the lower limb, the skin capillaries show proliferation and convolution. To our knowledge, no previous attempt has been made to correlate the clinical severity of venous disease based on the CEAP classification with the capillary morphology changes. The purpose of this study was to correlate the clinical severity with the capillary morphology changes in patients with chronic venous disease by using capillary microscopy and to explore the significance of atypical capillary morphology in patients with uncomplic…

Determination of cyanide in microliter samples by capillary electrophoresis and in-capillary enzymatic reaction with rhodanese.

This paper describes a method for the determination of cyanide using in-capillary enzymatic reaction with rhodanese. Poorly absorbing cyanide is in rhodanese reaction transformed into highly absorbing thiocyanate that is further separated by capillary electrophoresis (CE) and determined spectrophotometrically at 200 nm. Cyanide is thus estimated indirectly from the result of thiocyanate quantification and moreover, it can be easily determined with sufficient sensitivity by means of CE apparatus equipped with common UV detector. The linear detection range for concentration versus peak area for

A drying step in the protocol to pack capillary columns by centripetal forces for capillary electrochromatography.

Capillary columns have been packed for capillary electrochromatography (CEC) using centripetal forces. The packed columns were maintained under wet conditions or they were dried with nitrogen gas prior to forming the retaining frits. Upon fabrication of the retaining frits, the dried columns were resolvated with the mobile phase. The performance of the columns was evaluated to determine the effect of the drying step during the packing procedure. The columns submitted to the drying step showed improved separation efficiencies and stronger retention characteristics than those kept under wet cond

Endothelial cell alterations in capillaries of adipose tissue from patients affected by lipedema.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate adipose tissue of lipedema patients. METHODS: Gluteo-femoral (affected area) and interscapular (nonaffected area) adipose tissue from 10 lean patients affected by lipedema stage 1 to 2 was studied and compared with tissue from 10 patients with obesity and 12 lean patients. RESULTS: The main features were alterations of capillaries with wall thickening (p ≤ 0.0001), endothelial and pericyte hyperplasia (p = 0.03 and p = 0.004), hypodense areas in basal membrane, and endothelial degeneration with exfoliation of degenerated cells into the capillary lumen.…

The physical properties of an ensemble of tightly packed particles like bubbles, drops or solid grains are controlled by their interactions. … tween bubbles in simple model foams consisting of trains of equal-volume bubbles confined in square capillaries. The obtained interaction laws agree quantitatively with Surface Evolver simulations and are well described by an analytically derived expression based on the recently developed non-pairwise interaction model of Höhler et al. Dietary Compound Chrysin Inhibits Retinal Neovascularization with Abnormal Capillaries in db/db Mice.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) develops in a significant proportion of patients with chronic diabetes, characterized by retinal macular edema and abnormal retinal vessel outgrowth leading to vision loss. Chrysin, a naturally-occurring flavonoid found in herb and honeycomb, has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer properties. This study sought to determine the protective effects of chrysin on retinal neovascularization with abnormal vessels and blood-retinal barrier (BRB) breakdown in 33 mM glucose-exposed human retinal endothelial cells and in db/db mouse eyes. High glucose caused retina
